Dr. John Burgin
Integrating Teaching, Research, and Service
Dr. John Burgin, associate professor in the College of Education, exemplifies the model of successful integration of teaching, research, and service.
Over the past three years, Dr. Burgin has published six articles and a book chapter by the International Reading Association that outlines the organization and evaluation of the summer literacy program he created. In addition, he wrote grants totaling $100,000 to fund Literacy Camp.
He has also worked with 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Children鈥檚 International to design summer activities that include 28 sixth graders from the organization鈥檚 mentor program. The students use plays and fairy tales as the content for guided reading groups, write original scripts, and use the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock EAST Lab and theater to produce and film their plays. They ultimately edit and publish their plays in text and DVD formats. The culminating activity is a world premiere for an audience of 200 family and friends. Dr. Burgin also submits the short movies to the AETN Film Festival each spring.
He has been a member of the College of Education Assessment Committee for five years.
Dr. Burgin received a Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Ed.S. and M.S. degrees from Indiana University, and a B.A. degree from Hendrix College.
