There is a conference coming for future educators near and far that will be hosted right here on campus at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock! On November 17th, 2022, The University at Little Rock will be hosting a special conference for all aspiring future educators. All new teachers need encouragement and a motivational push and pat on the back for pursuing and preparing to take on a task as great and sometimes daunting as impacting the lives of those who will impact the future of the United States of America and possibly even abroad.

The conference will be held on campus at Stabler Hall from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. This annual conference was created with the ideas in mind to encourage and support high school and collegiate students who are interested in pursuing a career in education and serves as professional development for students enrolled in pre-educator programs of study.

The theme for this conference will be The Hard Truth on Soft Skills. The conference will include breakout session topics such as stress management, confidence, leadership, cultural competence, problem solving and work ethic. There will also be competitions on various different academic strategies including lesson planning, TED talks, speeches regarding Ed rising moments and so much more. There are 20+ students from 糖心Vlog传媒LR registered to attend and compete.

Last year, Ayonna Preston who is now completing her final internship this fall at 糖心Vlog传媒LR, won the regional and state competition, which awarded her a monetary prize and an all expense paid trip to Washington DC where she then placed 2nd in the nation. You can read more about her experience from last year by clicking this link. /education/edrising/

Look forward to reading more about this event as it unfolds and let鈥檚 hope for the best from our collegiate students as they represent 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

The University at Little Rock Wind Ensemble has a new director this year, okay well this director is not so new to the WE because truth be told, he was tasked to start the whole shebang in 2006 and had directed it for four years before another band director was hired for the position.

That very first year he started with four people and ended up with ten. Back then the concerts were once a semester and the pieces played were at a lower level in degree of difficulty.

The director I am referring to is Dr. Michael P. Underwood.

Dr. Underwood was gracious to grant me an interview to reflect on the most recent WE concert which was on October 6, 2022 and to talk about the one coming up next month on November 17th. But before getting into all that jazz, he filled me in on his background. Underwood who is from Milwaukee, Wisconsin was hired by 糖心Vlog传媒LR as a Music Theory Instructor in 2006 and if you do the math, that has him here for 17 years now. After releasing the reigns of the WE in 2010, he went on to direct the 糖心Vlog传媒LR jazz band. He has also been a member (trombonist) of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra since 2003.

In addition to his twenty years with the ASO, he not too long ago had the experience of directing a band filled with Chinese musicians in China in 2019 after working with them for 75-80 minutes with the help of an interpreter of course. When informed this summer that he would be tasked once again to direct the WE this school year, although sad to see the former band instructor go he was glad to be given the opportunity again. This semester there are 36 musicians in the wind ensemble.

If you would have attended the wind ensemble concert in the Stella Boyle Concert Hall on October 6th at the Fine Arts Building on campus at 糖心Vlog传媒LR, you would have seen on the screen on stage as you walked in and sat down, pictures that represented mid-century modern art of the 50鈥檚 and 60鈥檚 (a fad that saturated the market at that time) featured in the interior of houses that has made a huge come back according to Dr. Underwood.

When reflecting on that concert he stated that he felt like it went really well. He described the WE to be filled with students who wanted to be good and successful. Dr. Underwood went on to say that 鈥渢he energy the band gave was tremendous and the attention to detail was top level鈥. The first of the four pieces that were played that evening was ABC Wide World of Sports. Although this was an unusual piece to be played it is familiar to a lot of people.

The reason he gave for choosing this piece was because it was written for wind ensemble and percussion and he wanted to honor that.

The Delta composed by an African American named William Grant Still was a three- movement piece that Underwood was pleased to present because it was an opportunity to address the need for diversity, equity and inclusion. Another composition that was played by the WE called 鈥淧ageant鈥, Underwood said he had never heard performed.

This piece a composed by Vincent Persichetti who was in Dr. Underwood鈥檚 opinion one of the greatest composers in the 20th century, who not only was a child prodigy but had published his first opus at the age of 14.  鈥淚t was a great challenge for us which required lots of listening and musicianship鈥. He loved the colors in the piece and the fact that it had a lot of trombone parts in it which being a trombonist himself made it extra special to conduct.

Dr. Underwood ended the concert with a piece called 鈥淭he Booster鈥 recollecting a piece that was played by the jazz band last semester call 鈥淪oul Vaccination鈥. If you missed this concert there is another one coming up soon on November 17th that you can catch at 6:30pm. This concert will feature the 糖心Vlog传媒LR choir and vocalist Hannah Blacklaw singing a cha-cha called 鈥淭he Sway鈥 accompanied by the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Jazz Band. Another piece that is being prepared in the band room right now for the Oct. 6th concert is the 鈥淓nglish Folk Song鈥 which Underwood describes as active and energetic.

This upcoming concert will be a recruiting event as it will be on the same date that 鈥淢usic Major for a Day鈥 will be held. Be sure to make plans to come check out the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Wind Ensemble and be ready to be astounded and amazed as they strike up the band!

Criminal Trespassing Arrest

On March 1, Officer Rodney Barnes arrested a repeat offender in the East Hall lobby. The suspect had already been informed to not be on campus, according to Barnes鈥 narrative, and was transported and taken into custody at the Pulaski County Detention Center.

Burger Burning

On March 1, a fire alarm went off in South Hall. Officer Kenneth R. Woods and the Little Rock Fire Department responded. The resident, according to Woods鈥 report, said that while flipping burgers in their apartment, the excess smoke caused the fire alarm to go off.

Missing Machete

Officer Marilyn Thompson responded to a call made by a Resident Assistant (RA) about a found machete on March 1. According to Thompson鈥檚 report, the weapon was found near the Coleman Court building by a group of students. They turned it into the RA who then called the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Public Safety (DPS) and they took custody of it.

Heads Up in Dickinson Hall

A student reported damage to their laptop and a headache after a ceiling tile in the 100 auditorium in Dickinson Hall fell on them during class on March 3. Officer Benjamin Rommel wrote in his report that 鈥淭he laptop screen has damage to it and the screen now has distortion on it when playing.鈥

Missing Minerals

On Feb. 23, an unidentified couple entered the science lab through the first-floor elevator. The couple was then seen leaving and sifting through multiple trash bins and eventually getting on the Region Metro Bus, according to Rommel鈥檚 report.

Professors reported a mineral was missing from the science lab.

Fight in East Hall

On March 16, Rommel responded to a report of a fight in the East Hall building. The victim said they were pulled from behind after exiting the elevator and punched. After the victim was attacked two more suspects exited a blue car and began hitting the victim. Two of the suspects were identified by the victim.

DPS was able to identify the car, then the owner, and then build a profile of possible persons of interest that might be the third suspect. After conducting a photo lineup, the third suspect was identified and the investigation is pending affidavit.

Stalking in South Hall

The victim reported a case of harassment and stalking to Chief Detective Roy Mayo on March 18. The suspect was a fellow resident who, according to the report and the victim, seems to think they are in a relationship of some sort with the victim. The suspect has allegedly posted photos of personal information belonging to the victim and the victim鈥檚 partner. This includes a photo of a license plate number and a driver鈥檚 license.

Emily Bell, with the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Title IX office, was informed, according to the report. The victim was advised to avoid all contact with the suspect.
