Bowen Sports and Entertainment Law Student Society scores a touchdown with equipment drive
One of Bowen鈥檚 newest student organizations is already making an impact.
The Sports and Entertainment Law Student Society works to educate law students on the laws, policies, and regulations related to sports and entertainment and to help students network with attorneys already practicing in those fields. However, they also look for ways to involve their members in public service.
鈥淏eing a former teacher, I remembered that our students were always needing sports equipment,鈥� said SELSS President Colby Harber. 鈥淏asketballs, footballs, anything to play with. I thought a sports equipment drive was the perfect fit for us.鈥�
Harber contacted Aleta Branch, principal at Booker T. Washington Elementary, to see if the school had a need. Bowen students had already forged a bond with Washington Elementary after doing a rainy day of public service in August of this year.
鈥淧rincipal Branch said they had a huge need,鈥� Harber said. 鈥淚 was so excited because I knew that the equipment was going to be going to a good cause.鈥�
Harber asked Bowen鈥檚 Assistant Dean for External Relations Wanda Hoover for assistance in reaching out to alumni. 鈥淕ill, Ragon, and Owen stepped up to work with us. I worked with Kamerin Hargrove, the firm鈥檚 Head of Communication and Business Development.鈥�
SELSS placed boxes at the law school and at the offices of Gill, Ragon, Owen. When the drive ended, the boxes were full of soccer balls, basketballs, and footballs. Two mesh bags of more equipment sat next to the boxes. There was also an easy-setup volleyball net.
鈥淭he sports equipment donation was quite the success, and working with the law students from Bowen was a pleasure,鈥� said Hargrove. 鈥淲e hope the students at Washington Elementary are enjoying their new equipment as much as we enjoyed being part of such a wonderful contribution.鈥�
