Professor Anastasia Boles, a tenured law professor at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law, was named the 2024 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching honoree.

鈥淎ll of us at the Bowen School of Law are terrifically proud to see Professor Boles recognized with this teaching award,鈥 says Colin Crawford, dean of the William H. Bowen School of Law. 鈥淚t is wonderful that her distinction in the classroom has earned her this honor from the university.鈥

Professor Boles was recently awarded the 2024 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching at Bowen, making her eligible for the overall honor bestowed by the university. The award in teaching was created to recognize, encourage, and reward superior teachers, distinguishing them as teachers who maintain high expectations of their students and who ensure academic rigor in their courses. Professor Boles was nominated for the award by Bowen faculty member and Dean Emerita, Theresa Beiner, who lauded Boles as a mastered and innovative teacher who provided culturally proficient legal instruction in her courses.

鈥淢y main goals as a law teacher are to help my students develop the intellectual rigor and analytical ability to evaluate any legal issue, and to learn effective lawyering skills,鈥 Boles said in a personal statement. 鈥淢y teaching style is focused on three core ideas: (1) teaching through the paradigm of culturally proficient legal instruction (2) leveraging best practices in teaching and learning literature, and (3) student mentoring.鈥

Boles also received high praise from students and alumni alike who noted the importance of leadership in the classroom and her mentorship beyond the classroom.

鈥淚 have been fortunate throughout my academic journey to encounter several exceptional educators who were unwavering in their commitment to my success, both within and beyond the confines of the classroom,鈥 said Dominique Lane, a 2018 graduate of the Bowen School of Law. 鈥淧rofessor Boles imparted invaluable lessons鈥er approach was a perfect blend of patience and kindness coupled with firmness and challenge. I am undoubtedly a better lawyer and person for having had the privilege of being taught and mentored by Professor Anastasia Boles.鈥

In 2020, Boles was honored with a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Faculty Excellence Award in Public Service for her legal work addressing racial disparities and issues of inequality and inequity in the criminal justice system through community guidance and outreach and the development of training materials on cultural competency for law professors. The following year, Boles co-found the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law Center for Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform to advance racial equity, access to justice, and fairness in Arkansas and the region beyond through legal research. Since its launch, the center has engaged more than 100 pre-law students through its programs and has produced community-engaged research including its court observation project, a project funded by a $1 million dollar grant from Walmart, Inc.

Professor Boles joined Bowen in 2012 after several years of private practice with corporate law firms in California and New York, and a short stint as an adjunct professor and faculty fellow at Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego. Her practice focused on employment, labor, and securities litigation, as well as general civil litigation, and white-collar criminal defense. Boles graduated with honors from Stanford University and earned her law degree from Columbia Law School in New York.

Professors Anastasia Boles, Rebecca Feldmann, and Jordan Wallace-Wolf, as well as andr茅 cummings, associate dean for faculty development, were recognized as outstanding faculty members of the law school.

鈥淲e received several applications for the Faculty Excellence Awards 鈥 a true testament to the caliber of academics we have here at Bowen,鈥 said Kelly Terry, associate dean for experiential learning and chair of the William H. Bowen School of Law Faculty Excellence Awards Selection Committee. 鈥淭he committee members reviewed all of the nomination packets in each category and held a vote to select the winner in each category. This year鈥檚 honorees and their work in the classroom, the communities we serve, and beyond, is truly one of the best reflections of Bowen.鈥

Professor Boles received the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching for the William H. Bowen School of Law. This award was created to recognize, encourage and reward superior teachers, distinguishing them as teachers who maintain high expectations of their students and who ensure academic rigor in their courses. Professor Boles was nominated for the award by Bowen faculty member and Dean Emerita, Theresa Beiner.

鈥淧rofessor Boles exemplifies the qualities that this award recognizes,鈥 Beiner says. 鈥淪he is a master teacher; an innovative teacher who incorporates culturally proficient legal instruction in her courses, creating a more inclusive and engaging experience for all her students; and a mentor to the students in her classes as well as those who participate in her projects in Bowen鈥檚 Center for Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform.鈥

Professor Boles also received letters of endorsement from current and former students like Taylor Toombs, a graduating law student, who says:

鈥淧rofessor Boles is a phenomenal example of a community leader, legal leader, and a mentor. Her dedication to me, in and outside of class, and to other students to guarantee their success is why she should receive the faculty excellence award in teaching.鈥

Associate Dean andr茅 cummings received the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Faculty Excellence Award for Research and Creative Endeavors, an award designed to reward those whose creative endeavors have been particularly successful and are recognized locally, regionally and nationally. Dean cummings also received an award for professional and public, which exists to recognize individuals who have brought credit to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock through their successful efforts in applying the content or skills of the academic disciplines in service to the community, state, or nation in areas of public interests.

鈥淒ean cummings has been the driving force behind a collaboration which has resulted in the development of a body of groundbreaking legal scholarship that explores the way that the American legal system is a source of health-harming trauma for persons of color,鈥 says Bowen alum and judge of Little Rock鈥檚 sixth judicial district, Amy Dunn Johnson. 鈥淒ean cummings has generously given his time, expertise and tenacity to ensure that this body of work is shared with the broader community of lawyers, judges, law students and scholars so that our justice system can improve鈥e is an exceptional researcher, advocate, and teacher and is imminently deserving of recognition.鈥

The faculty excellence award in social justice was awarded to Rebecca Feldmann 鈥 assistant professor of clinical education and director of Bowen鈥檚 Veterans Services Legal Clinic. Professor Feldmann was nominated by associate professor and Bowen Mediation Clinic Director, Kelly Browe Olson.

鈥淧rofessor Feldmann鈥檚 exceptional advocacy, dedication to service and impact on social justice are truly inspiring and set a standard of excellence that reflect the core values of the law school and this award,鈥 Olson says. 鈥淗er innovative educational programs, impactful advocacy for veterans, and community engagement initiatives have had significant impact on countless individuals and the broader legal field.鈥

Lastly, Assistant Professor Jordan Wallace-Wolf received the Rising Faculty Excellence Award, nominated by associate dean, Lindsey Gustafson.

鈥淛ordan has demonstrated exceptional promise in teaching, research and creative endeavors, and public service,鈥 Gustafson says. 鈥淒espite his stellar academic accomplishments and experience, he joined our community with intellectual humility and grace. He expects of himself exactly what he asks of students 鈥 that they be consistently prepared, intellectually curious, and engaged in building their understanding and using it to serve community. Jordan has enriched our intellectual, academic, and overall law school community. He is absolutely a rising star.., and we are lucky to have him.鈥

Each honoree will be recognized for their achievements at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Faculty Excellence Awards Thursday, April 4, 2024. The honorees will also be considered for their awards at the university level.

The Bowen Law School Pathway Program was recently awarded the American Bar Association (ABA) 2024 Alexander Award for Excellence in Pipeline Diversity.

The Alexander Award, named after the life and legacy of two legal trailblazers, Raymond Pace Alexander and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, was created to honor an individual or organization that has demonstrated exemplary leadership and success in building educational pipelines to law school and the legal profession for underrepresented students.

鈥淲e are honored to receive the ABA鈥檚 Alexander Award for Excellence in Pipeline Diversity,鈥 says andr茅 cummings, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and co-founder of the Bowen Law School Center for Racial Justice and Criminal Justice Reform. 鈥淥ur pathway program works diligently to ensure that underrepresented Arkansas communities and those that have been historically discriminated against have opportunities that they may not otherwise.鈥

Through the pathway program students receive expert Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) instruction, experience mock classes, and are offered an opportunity to visit the school, meet the dean, and learn more about the admissions process. Since its inception in 2019, the Bowen Law School Pathway Program has engaged more than 100 students, many of whom have enrolled at Bowen and other law schools throughout the country.

The award was accepted earlier this month by Associate Dean cummings and a former pathway program participant and current first-year law student, Lubna Yunus, at the annual ABA mid-year meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.

鈥淚 will never forget meeting Dean cummings for the first time,鈥 Yunus says. 鈥淚t was the best thing that could have ever happened to me in terms of pursuing my dreams of becoming a lawyer. Today, I am a first-year law student at Bowen, and every day I look forward to the day I will take the bar exam and become a very strong advocate for victims of domestic violence and children with special needs.鈥

Associate Dean Lindsey P. Gustafson

Lindsey P. Gustafson, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Arkansas Bar Association Professor of Law at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law, has been named to the editorial board of The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning.

This new journal, which will focus on legal teaching methods and practice, has been launched by , of which Gustafson is a co-director and Bowen is a co-sponsor. The Institute plans to release one volume per year, beginning in fall 2023.

The Institute was established in 1991 to help law schools provide a learning environment that helps students achieve the highest academic standards and prepares them to assume their responsibilities as effective and moral attorneys. It is the oldest and preeminent law school-based initiative aimed at improving law teaching and learning. The Institute hosts national teaching conferences and conducts private trainings for law schools across the country and throughout the world.

“We are excited to start a peer-reviewed journal on legal pedagogy. Not many legal journals are peer reviewed, and we have assembled an all-star group of editors,” Gustafson said. “We hope authors really notice and appreciate the care we will give to articles, and that we can help build this critical area of scholarship.”

The journal is dedicated to high-quality, full-length law review articles on law teaching. The vision for the journal is to publish science-based articles focused on theoretical or empirical studies of effective teaching and learning. Article topics will range from pedagogy specific to particular fields, like constitutional law, to assessment best practices applicable across all law school courses. An important goal of the new journal will be to publish articles that are driven by evidence rather than articles that report anecdotal experiences of law teachers. By promoting excellence in law teaching via the journal, the Institute hopes that law schools will better prepare students to succeed in practice and pass the bar exam.

The Institute will send The Journal of Law Teaching and Learning by email to every law professor in the country, and is now accepting submissions on . Scholars may also submit articles directly to the editor of the inaugural issue, Professor Michael Colatrella, by email at mcolatrella@pacific.edu.

The is pleased to welcome new faculty this fall. In addition to those announced below, new professors will be joining the full-time faculty and the legal clinic faculty. Visiting professors will also be joining the writing faculty.

Meet the three new full-time faculty members.

Professor Faraz Sanei

Faraz Sanei joins the faculty as an assistant professor of law. He holds a J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School and a B.A. in political science from UCLA. Sanei鈥檚 scholarship explores the dynamic normative framework surrounding religious freedom and its interaction with other fundamental rights such as equality, speech, and life (e.g., death penalty). He is also interested in the ways international human rights law informs and shapes civil rights advocacy at the national and local levels.

Prior to joining the Bowen faculty, Sanei was an Acting Assistant Professor of Lawyering at the New York University School of Law and the Telford Taylor Clinical Teaching Fellow at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Before that, he served as the Legal Advisor to Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief (and, separately, the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran). From 2010 to 2015, Sanei was a researcher with the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch. He began his legal career as an associate at the law firm of Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix, AZ.

Photo of Professor Jordan Wallace-Wolf

Jordan Wallace-Wolf also joins the faculty as an assistant professor of law. He is a graduate of the law and philosophy programs at UCLA, where he earned a J.D. from the law school and a Ph.D. from the philosophy department. His main area of research concerns the distinction between what is private and what is public and the significance of this distinction for law and morality. His dissertation, Mental Privacy, argues that persons have an important privacy interest in their thoughts that warrants legal recognition.

Wallace-Wolf鈥檚 recent scholarship discusses the protection of anonymity under the First Amendment and the justification for the principle that no one may be punished for their thoughts.

In teaching, he focuses on giving students the tools to untangle difficult legal problems and find enjoyment in earnest intellectual effort.

Photo of Professor Harry Lah

Harry Lah joins the faculty as an assistant professor of law librarianship. He is the library鈥檚 Collections Management Librarian. He joined the law library staff in 2019 while pursuing his J.D. He holds a B.A. in history and secondary education from Ouachita Baptist University and an M.S. in Information Science from the University of North Texas.

Prior to entering law school, Lah gained extensive experience in librarianship and archiving during his employment with the Arkansas State Library, the Arkansas State Archives, and the Riley-Hickingbotham Library at Ouachita Baptist University. He also played an active and contributing role in the re-establishment and rededication of the archiving and organization of the papers of the late Senator John L. McClellan at Ouachita Baptist University. He served as a panelist at the 2018 conference of the American Society of Archivists in Washington, D.C., highlighting his work on the digitization and historical preservation of the Rohwer Japanese Internment Camp in McGehee, Arkansas.

鈥淲e are excited to welcome these new professors,鈥 said Dean Theresa Beiner. 鈥淭hey will have a positive impact on our students鈥 experiences at Bowen and their future legal careers.鈥
