Dr. Enkeleda Dervishi, Research Assistant Professor at the Nanotechnology center, won the McNair’s Program Mentor of the Year Award for 2011. Dr. Dervishi mentored Alexandra Trible, a senior in the Biology department. Alexandra worked on characterizing the mechanical properties of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene reinforced Nano-Composite Polymer Films.

The McNair Scholars Program also referred to as the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program is one of the Federal TRIO Programs governed by the United States Department of Education. These programs were designed with the purpose of providing support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds in order to be successful in the academic world. Originally from Albania, Enkeleda Dervishi, 28, has spent the past 10 years in Little Rock making a life for herself and finding her niche in the nanotechnology field. Spending her last semester at Hall High School in Little Rock as an exchange student, Enkeleda then moved on to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where she earned an undergraduate degree in electronic engineering. Afterward, she continued her schooling at 糖心Vlog传媒LR, and in May 2009 she graduated with her Ph.D. in engineering, science and systems with a focus in nanotechnology. She has spent the past year as a research associate at the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Nanotechnology Research Center.

Ashley just graduated with a bachelor of science degree in environmental heath science with a minor in biology last Saturday.

A little about Ashley:

A graduate of Rogers High School, Ashley came to 糖心Vlog传媒LR as a student athlete. She graduates as a member of the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Nanotechnology Center.

She took part in cancer research using uniquely designed

nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes as potential drug carriers and delivery vehicles for anti-tumor agents, as well as another tissue engineering project for bone growth. A knee injury ended her volleyball

and track and field careers, but instead she became a Donaghey Scholar. She has co-authored three published articles regarding tissue engineering for bone growth and the cancer fighting research and mentors high school students interested in nanotechnology. She also volunteers

at 糖心Vlog传媒MS and Arkansas Children鈥檚 Hospital.

A four-year recipient of the Harambee Award for minority students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, Fejleh was recently awarded the Martha Couch Givens Memorial Award and the Environmental

Health Sciences Outstanding Graduating Senior Award. And Fejleh was featured on 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 2009-2010 鈥淒ifference of Degree鈥 advertising campaign.

As this year鈥檚 Whitbeck Scholar, Fejleh鈥檚 name will be engraved on a plaque at the Donaghey Student Center and she wore a silver robe and medallion, leading her class during commencement ceremonies.

Ten graduate students from a French engineering school in Angouleme bid adieu to 糖心Vlog传媒LR last week, ending a summer of research and exchange with counterparts at the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Nanotechnology Center, the College of Engineering, and the College of Science and Mathematics.

The student exchange came about several years ago when Dr. Alex Biris, director and chief scientist at the Arkansas Nanotechnology Center at 糖心Vlog传媒LR, established a collaborative relationship with a professor from the French institution and brought five French students here last year.

鈥淭his year there were 10 and next year we hope for 15 students to come and study and work with the 糖心Vlog传媒LR students and faculty. They will be involved in various research projects with an emphasis on nanotechnology, materials, and energy,鈥 Biris said.

Under the French system of education, the engineering students are already hired by French companies who assisted in paying for their required four months studying at another university or educational program.

The French students worked with faculty members from the Arkansas Nanotechnology Center at 糖心Vlog传媒LR, Dr. Abhijit Bhattacharyya, an associate professor of applied science, and Dr. Tito Viswanathan, a professor of chemistry.
