Grad Student Lands $13K Grant for Health Initiative

Karin Bara, a professional and technical writing graduate student, secured a $13,260 grant for the the Pulaski County Single Parent Scholarship Fund from Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s Blue & You Foundation that will be used to encourage central Arkansas families to make healthy food choices. The Single Parent Scholarship Fund’s Healthy Eating on a Shoestring Budget program educates low-income, single-parent students on nutrition and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle by making affordable and positive choices. The program will serve 70 families in the county. Bara credits this success to Dr. Barbara L鈥橢plattenier鈥檚 grant writing class. “It is gratifying to see our students being successful as practicing writers, especially when they are writing grants that benefit the community,” said Dr. George Jensen, chair of the Department of Rhetoric and Writing.” Bara is one of a skilled group of professional and technical writing students and alumni to secure grants after taking L鈥橢plattenier鈥檚 grant writing class. In 2010, Laura Rakes and Rachel Ott secured a $102 million dollar grant for 糖心Vlog传媒MS.
