Visual studies prof to present art lectures

A professor of art in visual studies at Winston Salem State University will visit 糖心Vlog传媒LR this week as part of the 鈥淲hy Take/Teach Foundations?鈥� series for students and faculty.

Scott Betz, who is also interim director of the Center for Design Innovation at the University of North Carolina, will deliver three lectures as part of the series. The first two lectures are open to students and faculty. His talk, 鈥淪et UP,鈥� will be from from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 13, in room 157 of the Fine Arts Building. The following day, Thursday, Nov. 14, he will discuss combat drawings and personal content from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. in a lecture titled 鈥淜nock Down,鈥� in room 161 of the Fine Arts Building. Later that evening, from 6 to 7 p.m., also in room 161, Betz will present 鈥淚nspire,鈥� a talk on collaboration that is open to the public, in addition to students and faculty. Fall exhibits continue

Fall exhibitions at 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Art Gallery continue to showcase the work of studio art and graphic design students from the Department of Art. Exhibition A runs through Nov. 20 in Gallery III and will feature the artwork of graphic design majors Lavon Amerson, Jonathan Helms, and Jessica Miles. The artwork of Zachary Waymire, a studio art major, will also be featured. Exhibition B will be in Gallery III Nov. 23 through Dec. 11 and will feature the sculptures of artist Justin Puska, the graphic design illustrations of Tyler Bean, and the artwork of Bertha Ramos and Keesha Bass, both studio art majors. Dan Thornhill will present his master of arts thesis exhibition Dec. 2 through 20 in Gallery II, 鈥淭he Abstraction of Toys,鈥� a series of paintings that reveals an evolution from a representational to a more abstract style of painting. According to Thornhill, inspiration for his subject matter and composition came from his grandchildren鈥檚 toys. The abstract works of Pablo Picasso also heavily influenced his paintings.

In Gallery I, the exhibit, 鈥淔uN HoUSe,鈥� will continue through Dec. 10. It features the complexity of interpersonal relationships to provoke thought. Playful in nature, this exhibition draws on the amusement park funhouse experience with an adult twist. In Gallery II, 鈥淣octurne,鈥� a drawing exhibit by graphic design professor Marjorie Williams-Smith, will be on display through Nov. 24. Williams-Smith uses metal in her drawings to evoke emotions that are pensive, mysterious, and introspective. A reception for Nocturne and FuNHoUSe is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16. A reception for The Abstraction of Toys and FuN HoUSe will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6. The galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 聽Saturdays, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. The galleries are closed during the upcoming holiday season.
