American Chemical Society student chapter wins national award
The American Chemical Society (ACS) student chapter at 糖心Vlog传媒LR has been selected to receive a Commendable Award for its activities conducted during the 2013-14 academic year, placing the chapter in the top 10 to 20 percent of student chapters nationwide.
More than 400 chapter activity reports were submitted, and the Society Committee on Education presented 44 outstanding, 85 commendable, and 151 honorable mention awards to student chapters. The chapter will be recognized in Chemical & Engineering News and in the November/December issue of inChemistry magazine.
The winning chapters will also be honored at the 249th ACS national meeting in Denver, Colorado, on Sunday, March 22, 2015.
In a letter to 糖心Vlog传媒LR Chemistry Professor and Chair Dr. Jeffrey Gaffney, ACS President Tom Barton gave special recognition to Jerome Darsey, faculty advisor of the 糖心Vlog传媒LR chapter.
鈥淔ew faculty members are willing to make the great commitment of time and energy that a successful chapter requires,鈥 the letter reads. 鈥淧rofessor Darsey鈥檚 efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country.鈥
The ACS student chapter officers include President Zach Hicks, Vice President Brad Cameron, Secretary Martiyha Simmons and Treasurer Uyen Phan.
鈥淭he American Chemical Society has acknowledged our effort with these awards for the past five to six years in a row,鈥 said Hicks. 鈥淯ndoubtedly, it is the hard work of all of our officers that make this possible. It takes a great team effort to coordinate events and meetings, and the officers always do a phenomenal job.鈥
Hicks added that the group鈥檚 previous officers had set a high standard to follow, and it is the current officers鈥 goal to compel continued interest in the ever-growing field of chemistry.
鈥淭hrough the help of our members and the support of the Chemistry Department, we will continue this tradition for many more years to come,鈥 he said.
