New interactive art exhibit utilizes mirrors, artist talk Oct. 14

Visual artist Marianela de la Hoz will present an artist talk at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in Room 161 of the Fine Arts Building at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. A reception in honor of De La Hoz will precede her talk from 4 to 6 p.m. De La Hoz鈥檚 exhibit, 鈥厂辫别肠耻濒耻尘-厂辫别肠耻濒补谤颈,鈥 is on display in 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Gallery I now until Dec. 8. 鈥淪peculum-Speculari鈥 encourages viewers to engage and reflect upon the significance underlying the symbolism of mirrors and their functions. Looking at paintings and mirrors, viewers are invited to participate with created and reflected surfaces. Using actual mirrors, the artist gives movement to the show and creates a dynamic participatory experience. De La Hoz鈥檚 egg tempera paintings, silverpoint, ink, and graphite drawings, as well as mixed media combinations are presented along with painted phrases on mirrors that refer to reflection. Born in Mexico City, De La Hoz has lived in San Diego for more than 10 years. Her art is exhibited widely in Mexico City and Southern California. 鈥淢arianela De La Hoz: Speculum-Speculari鈥 was organized by the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida. Curator Dr. Amy Galpin was inspired to shape the exhibition around the painting Dweller on the Threshold鈥by Arthur Bowen Davies. The painting features a woman looking at her own image. It is part of the collection at Cornell Fine Arts Museum and included in this exhibition with the artworks of Marianela De La Hoz. Brad Cushman, 糖心Vlog传媒LR Gallery director and curator, selected additional works for the university鈥檚 exhibition. Each week, gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be open weekends from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. All exhibitions and lectures are free and open to the public.
