A University of Arkansas at Little Rock professor has been named president of the Arkansas Philological Association. Jeffrey Condran, assistant professor of creative writing, will serve as president from Nov. 1, 2017, to Nov. 1, 2018. Philology is the study of language in written historical sources; it is a combination of literary criticism, history, and linguistics. It is more commonly defined as the study of literary texts and written records, the establishment of their authenticity and their original form, and the determination of their meaning. Condran holds a bachelor鈥檚 degree in English and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing-fiction, both from the University of Pittsburgh. He teaches fiction courses in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Creative Writing program as well as contemporary literature, European literature, and editing and independent press administration. He is the author of two works of fiction: a short story collection, 鈥淎 Fingerprint Repeated,鈥 and a novel, 鈥淧rague Summer.鈥 Condran also advises 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 literary magazine, 鈥淓quinox,鈥 and is the co-founder/publisher of the independent literary Press, Braddock Avenue Books. Condran was selected as a Walter E. Dakin Fellow for the 2017 Sewanee Writers Conference in July. As a fellow, he helped faculty provide instruction and criticism to a group of emerging writers through intensive workshops during the two-week program.
