Students started taking classes at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in January to learn independent living skills and employment skills, and to explore careers throughinternships. The seven graduates include Charlee Brosh of Little Rock, Reshad Brown of Maumelle, David Dallas of Sherwood, Essense Hayes of Maumelle, Todd Hewitt of Little Rock, LaQuan Jones of Little Rock, and Shawn Morehart of Mabelvale. Three of the graduates have already found permanent employment. Brosh will work at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Speech and Hearing Clinic, while Dallas is working at McDonalds in Sherwood. Jones, who found a job at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Fitness Center, said he gained the most experience working in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock School of Education. 鈥淧eople would come into the office to learn how they could go to school,鈥 Jones said. 鈥淚t was the greatest learning experience. We did our best to research the type of job we wanted. We had mentors help us with interviewing skills. It was a great privilege to learn and study new things.鈥 While addressing the graduates, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor Andrew Rogerson emphasized the importance of higher education, employment, and living independently for success. 鈥淗igher education must be available and accessible for all,鈥 Rogerson said. 鈥淗igher education enriches one鈥檚 life and allows each one of you to reach your full potential. This is a proud moment for the Class of 2017.鈥 Keynote Speaker Rick Fleetwood, CEO of Snell Prosthetics and Orthotics and Easterseals Arkansas board member who also serves on the national Easterseals board of directors, praised the graduates for being the first people to complete a program that has the potential to help many others. 鈥淚t鈥檚 always important to be the first,鈥 Fleetwood said. 鈥淵ou are setting a new trail and raising the bar. Education is an equalizer. I am so glad we have this program that will help make things easier for you and those who follow your path.鈥 All of the graduates were awarded a free membership to the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Association. Velmer Burton named new 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provost]]> 鈥淲e鈥檙e thrilled to have Dr. Burton join our leadership team,鈥 said 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor Andrew Rogerson. 鈥淗e is extremely well qualified to help 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock grow into a transformative university that drives economic development in central Arkansas.鈥 Burton, most recently the dean of the University of Mississippi School of Applied Sciences and a tenured professor, has nearly 30 years of faculty and administrative experience in higher education. Previously, he was a special assistant to the senior vice president for system academic administration at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Burton also has a wide-ranging leadership background that includes stints as department head, graduate dean, and small campus chancellor at a variety of universities. His experience leading student retention and graduation initiatives is a strong fit for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 goal of bolstering the regional economy by making higher education more affordable and accessible to central Arkansas students, Rogerson said. 鈥淒r. Burton鈥檚 talents and decades of academic experience have him well positioned to serve our students and faculty who are critical to our success and mission,鈥 Rogerson said. Burton is ready for the opportunity. “I’m delighted to accept the role of executive vice chancellor and provost at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and to join the faculty as a professor of criminal justice,鈥 Burton said. 鈥淐hancellor Rogerson鈥檚 leadership and vision for the university convinced me of the bright future that awaits the institution. 鈥淚 look forward to teaming-up with the talented faculty, academic administration and staff to equip students with the vital skills and knowledge necessary to make them successful.鈥 Burton sees great things on the horizon for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and the region. 鈥淒uring my campus visit, it became clear that the university has enormous potential and is poised to advance as a premier metropolitan and research university for the city of Little Rock and the state of Arkansas,” he said. As a teacher-scholar, Burton taught courses in the areas of crime and justice, criminology, and research methods. His scholarship involves testing theories of crime and community corrections and assessing the collateral consequences and legal restrictions placed on the rights of former offenders. Burton鈥檚 findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals, including 鈥淐riminology,鈥 鈥淛ustice Quarterly,鈥 鈥淛ournal of Quantitative Criminology,鈥 鈥淛ournal of Research in Crime and Delinquency,鈥 鈥淛ournal of Criminal Justice,鈥 and 鈥淔orensic Social Work.鈥 Burton has a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Cincinnati and an Ed.D. in higher education management from the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned a 2004 certificate for new presidents from Harvard University鈥檚 Graduate School of Education and holds bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees in criminal justice from the University of Cincinnati. The Trojans had 63 student-athletes enrolled in summer classes representing seven Little Rock teams. Five of those teams saw its student-athletes finish the semester with grade point averages higher than 3.0. Overall, 40 of those 64 student-athletes posted GPAs of 3.0 or higher in the summer months. The Little Rock women’s track and field/cross country squad had the highest grade point average of any team over the summer, finishing with a semester GPA of 3.3. Two of the three Trojans finished with a GPA above 3.0 for the summer, and one of them earned a perfect 4.0 for the semester. The Trojans’ cumulative GPA stands at 3.31. The Trojan men’s golf team had the second-highest semester GPA, ending the term with a combined 3.2. Three of its four student-athletes posted GPAs above 3.0, and two earned perfect 4.0s. Little Rock men’s golf now has a cumulative GPA of 3.28. Little Rock volleyball’s semester GPA was 3.14, with 10 of the 14 volleyball players earning grade point averages of 3.0 or higher in the summer. Four players on the team came away with perfect 4.0 averages for the semester. Trojan volleyball’s cumulative GPA is now up to 3.34. The Trojan men’s cross country and track team combined for a 3.1 grade point average. Three of its four student-athletes get a GPA of 3.0 or better. One had a perfect 4.0. Little Rock women’s basketball had a grade point average of 3.08 over the summer. Twelve of the program’s 14 student-athletes earned a GPA of at least 3.0 during the summer, and four of them came away with 4.0s. The program now has a cumulative GPA of 3.1. The Trojan baseball team saw eight of its 12 student-athletes from the summer semester earn 3.0 GPAs or better, and the team earned a semester GPA of 3.06. Those 12 players now have a cumulative GPA of 3.37.
