Educational materials like textbooks, curriculum, lecture notes, syllabi, assignments, and tests would be open to the public and could be used by students and faculty without cost. 鈥淥ur purpose is to provide and promote the use of pedagogical content that will assist online instructors with acquiring exceptional course materials, creative innovative learning through collaboration, promote student retention, and reduce costs,鈥 said Carol Macheak, research and scholarly communications coordinator for Ottenheimer Library. Winners of the will adopt open educational resources for an existing online class. Each professor will receive a grant of $750 or $1,500. Some of the professors will use the grant money to create open educational resources that will replace textbooks in their courses and save their students hundreds of dollars. A total of $9,000 in grants were funded by a partnership between the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock offices of Collections and Archives, eLearning, and Scholarly Technology and Resources. “OER is a growing method to allow students to have direct access to course material during the semester, especially in cases where the book is not available or the student lacks funding,鈥 said Dr. David Montague, director of eLearning. 鈥淭his tremendous student retention oriented collaboration between Collections & Archives and eLearning & STaR promotes discussion on appropriate OER content selection and even provides an Ottenheimer librarian to assist in that process.” The winners include:

ATLE to host writing workshops]]> The 糖心Vlog传媒LR Academy of Teaching and Learning Excellence will host a faculty and staff writing retreat and two writing workshops May 17-18 in Little Rock.聽 , associate provost for academic engagement and director of the writing center at the University of Oklahoma, will lead the workshops. The faculty/staff writing retreat will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the University of Arkansas System Office boardroom at 2404 N. University Ave. Participants should bring a copy of their current writing projects in electronic or paper format. Space is limited to the first 24 participants. Lunch will be provided. To RSVP for this retreat, please fill out . A two-part workshop that focuses on working with student writers will be held on Wednesday, May 18, at the University of Arkansas System Office boardroom. The morning session, from 9 a.m. to noon, will focus on how to design meaningful writing assignments. Participants should bring a copy of a writing assignment or assignments they would like to improve. The Wednesday afternoon session will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. It will focus on working with students engaged in independent writing projects, particularly undergraduate and graduate theses and dissertations. Eodice has been a writing center director and a leader in the field of writing centers for more than 20 years. The event will feature three 糖心Vlog传媒LR teachers who were recognized with 2015 Faculty Excellence Awards in teaching. Lunch will begin at noon, followed by the panel discussion at 12:30 p.m. 鈥淎ll three faculty members were recognized by their colleagues with Faculty Excellence Awards in teaching in 2015 for their incorporation of engaging teaching methods, their willingness to teach beyond traditional classroom walls, and their use of assessment to help inform their teaching,鈥 said Dr. Kristin Mann, co-director of ATLE. Panel members include Dr. Tom Tudor, professor of management; Christy Jackson, advanced instructor of mathematics; and Dr. Terrence Cain, associate professor of law. Tudor was the university鈥檚 2015 recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award in teaching. Jackson was the college winner for the College of Arts, Letters, and Sciences, while Cain was the college winner for the William H. Bowen School of Law. Tudor will discuss ways to motivate students to stay interested in learning and to connect the importance of the subject beyond a final grade in the classroom. 鈥淚 think it is important to have a passion for whatever subject you are teaching,鈥 Tudor said. 鈥淚f you are not excited about it, don鈥檛 expect students to like the subject either. I assume that all my students want to learn. While I do not have 100 percent control over student learning efforts, I do have 100 percent of the control over learning methods. The 糖心Vlog传媒LR Academy for Learning and Teaching Excellence聽Shadow-A-Student program pairs faculty members and students. The faculty member attends one of the student鈥檚 classes, and the pair meet to discuss the experience. Academy staff members will contact the student鈥檚 instructor in advance to gain permission for the faculty member to attend the class. After the class visit and discussion with the student, the faculty member will write a description of the experience to share at the academy鈥檚 Shadow-A-Student luncheon on Wednesday, April 6.
