Brown Honored in 2021 Diamond Journalism Awards]]> Alexandria Brown, a senior mass communication major at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been honored for her work with the very first story she ever made for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio.聽 Brown, who reports and hosts 鈥淎ll Things Considered鈥 and 鈥淲eekend Edition鈥 for K糖心Vlog传媒R received third place honors in the Features, Broadcast category for her story, 鈥.鈥 The judges called Brown’s story “straightforward and interesting.” 鈥淭hank you to the judges for allowing me to receive my first Diamond Journalism Award,鈥 said Brown, a native of England, Arkansas. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such an honor to even be considered in this contest. The story I entered was the first piece I ever did for K糖心Vlog传媒R. It was about how an early census deadline could impact Arkansas鈥 economy by losing billions of dollars. This piece is special to me because it showed me how vital it is to inform our democracy about matters that impact us all that we may not even be aware of. Thank you to my fellow news team for guiding me through this and congratulations to them as well.鈥 The 2021 Diamond Journalism Award Contest is sponsored by the Arkansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. She now works part-time as the 鈥淎ll Things Considered鈥 host and a reporter for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio. She is also a recent recipient of the Arkansas Press Women鈥檚 annual scholarship and a reporter with The Forum, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 student newspaper. We have seen the evidence of this first-hand in the pandemic and in the run-up to the 2020 election,” said Nathan Vandiver, general manager of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio. “It’s an honor to serve our community in this way, and it’s especially an honor for the hard work of our news team to be recognized among such an impressive group of journalists from across the region.” K糖心Vlog传媒R News received honors on six stories from the past year. “It’s great to see K糖心Vlog传媒R’s news department being honored for its reporting, especially when competing against radio and television stations from states within this region of the country,” K糖心Vlog传媒R News Director Michael Hibblen said. “I’m extremely proud of the work of our news staff.” Daniel Breen, K糖心Vlog传媒R Morning Edition host and reporter, received second place honors in Political Coverage, Broadcast and Education Coverage, Broadcast for his stories, , and,聽. “The breadth of what you covered, while focusing on the volunteer, is impressive,” judges said of his political entry, and of his education story, “This was a very strong entry. The story included a lot of voices with different perspectives on the problem and how to address it. Well done.” Sarah Kellogg, K糖心Vlog传媒R’s politics and government reporter received third place honors in Political Coverage, Broadcast for her story, . Judges called her work, a “really smart use of natural sound.” K糖心Vlog传媒R News Director Michael Hibblen received second place honors in Health/Science Coverage, Broadcast for his story, . Judges also made note of Hibblen’s “nice use of natural sound throughout” the story. Alexandria Brown, who reports and hosts All Things Considered and Weekend Edition for K糖心Vlog传媒R received third place honors in Features, Broadcast, for her story, . Judges called Brown’s story “straightforward and interesting.” Brown is a student in 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s School of Mass Communication. Judges also recognized freelance reporter Anna Stitt, who produced a series,聽, for K糖心Vlog传媒R News. This series was supported by the National Geographic Society鈥檚 COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Journalists. Stitt’s series received third place honors in the Documentary/Investigative, Broadcast category. Brown Awarded Arkansas Press Women Scholarship]]> A rising star in student journalism at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from Arkansas Press Women鈥檚 annual scholarship contest. Alexandria Brown, a junior mass communication major with a concentration in journalism from England, Arkansas, has aspirations to work as a broadcast reporter after her graduation from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2022. 鈥淚鈥檓 honestly so grateful to have been awarded the scholarship,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淚鈥檇 like to thank the scholarship chair and the members of Arkansas Press Women for giving back to students like me. This scholarship will grant me more journalism opportunities to advance in my career and reach the goal of informing our democracy every day.鈥 The APW scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate college student in Arkansas who is planning a career in mass communication or journalism. Funding for this scholarship comes from APW鈥檚 Maudine Sanders Education Fund. Sanders, a previous owner of the Springdale Morning News, was a long-time member of Arkansas Press Women before her passing in 2011. “We’re excited to support Alexandria in her journalism journey,鈥 said Kristin Netterstrom Higgins, president of Arkansas Press Women. 鈥淗er student experiences in the newsroom and on the local NPR affiliate show her strong desire to tell people’s stories and give them a voice. Improving student lives is exactly what the Book Grant Awards have done. 鈥淭he book grant has been a great blessing,鈥 said Fendley, a law school student. 鈥淭his is one of my most expensive semesters for books. The grant helped offset the cost of my semester and saved me from adding that much more to student loan debt.鈥 Graduate students echoed Fendley鈥檚 appreciation. “I am honored to have been selected for the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock 2020 Book Grant Award scholarship,鈥 Dlouhy said. 鈥淭his scholarship allows me to obtain the materials necessary to excel in my courses as I pursue a master’s degree in business administration.” Miller, an art history graduate student, said being awarded the book scholarship has been very helpful for covering expenses at the onset of the semester. 鈥淭he scholarship has allowed me to purchase books needed for my classes and not have to worry about having the correct book on time,” Miller said. “Thank you so much for this award!鈥 Trapizonian, an international MBA student, said he is especially grateful for the award since international students have limited opportunity to work and earn money while pursuing a degree. 鈥淭his is my final semester in the MBA program, and I want to finish strong by staying focused on my studies,” Trapizonian said. 鈥淭he Book Grant Award helped reduce my education expenses and has made a positive difference in my semester already.鈥 When reviewing student scholarship applications, the Bookstore Advisory Committee considered academic achievement, leadership, community service, and financial need. To be eligible, students needed a minimum 2.5 GPA and six completed credit hours if a graduate student or nine completed credit hours if an undergraduate student. Parks, an accounting and professional sales major who also serves as a resident assistant, said he especially appreciated that his pursuit of good grades has been acknowledged through a scholarship that helps pay for expensive books. 鈥淏eing able to receive a book grant is an awesome blessing,鈥 Parks said. 鈥淚t’s great to see my hard work acknowledged in the form of this scholarship.
