Clinton Presidential Library. Corby was named one of the Top 10 Female CEOs of 2016 by dotCEO. Additionally, the Austin Business Journal recognized her as a 2015 Profiles in Power 鈥 Women of Influence in Central Texas finalist.

Road to success

A native of Massachusetts, Corby found herself in Arkansas when a family member, a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, was stationed in Little Rock. At first, she majored in education at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. After doing incredibly well in some accounting classes, her career path changed. 鈥淭he professor came up to me and asked me if I had ever thought of going into accounting,鈥 Corby said. 鈥淗e said I could do very well, and it would be a good base for a business career. It was literally my professor who steered me into business and accounting.鈥 After completing an internship at BKD CPAs and Advisors during her junior year at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Corby began her career as a senior auditor at BKD. At 26, she then became the youngest chief financial officer of the Times Record News, an E.W. Scripps Company. After a transition to law firms, Corby served as chief financial officer of Godwin Gruber, LLP, chief operating officer of Baker & McKenzie, LLP, in Dallas, and chief operating officer of Mayer Brown in New York City. She is now the CEO, president, and one of two female board members of Cobra Legal Solutions, LLC. Based in Austin, Texas, with offices domestically and abroad, Corby leads an incredible staff of legal experts and technologists to help corporate legal departments and law firms manage their information management needs consistently and cost-effectively. When she became a CEO, Corby looked forward to emails she would receive from her father, Ralph Hunter, who passed away in 2012. He was so proud of his daughter that he took pleasure in writing emails with the subject line 鈥淣otes to the CEO.鈥 鈥淗e would give me business advice, and I saved all his emails,鈥 Corby said. 鈥淟ast year when I ran my first marathon, I carried my father鈥檚 silver dollar in my pocket so we could run it together in a way.鈥 In addition to her father, Corby鈥檚 husband has also been an incredible source of support and strength. 鈥淭hroughout your life and career, there are many ups and downs,鈥 she said. 鈥淲ithout the love and unwavering support of my husband, Ken Corby, I would not be where I am today. He is my rock.鈥

Accomplishments

Corby is a frequent speaker and mentor, having been interviewed by the Harvard Business School Executive MBA program on “How Key Women Succeed.” She also moderated panel discussions at The University of Texas McCombs Executive MBA Program on “Championing Women in the Workplace” and participated on a panel for the Four Seasons Hotel 鈥 Austin’s program on “Women in Leadership.” To be successful in today鈥檚 environment, Corby advises students to remain positive in a world that seems filled with negative attitudes. 鈥淢y advice to students would be to persevere,鈥 she said. 鈥淚n this sort of turbulent environment, both politically, economically, and socially, stay with your beliefs and focus on them. Do not let them interfere with your ability to be a patriot and to move forward and be a positive beacon.鈥 Corby is an advocate for many causes that are near to her heart, including the arts, health, women’s initiatives, diversity, and eradicating homelessness. She serves on the boards of Zach Theatre, Austin Opera, University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music Directors’ Council, and Ellevate Network. Uncle鈥檚 generosity leads to 糖心Vlog传媒LR scholarship donation for journalism students]]> Mark George remembers his father, Marcus George, as a hardcore, old-school journalist who worked six days a week and believed strongly in objectivity. He believed in limiting opinions to the editorial page, where it was the opinion of the newspaper and not a single reporter,鈥 said Mark George, an investment advisor at Heritage Asset Managers in Little Rock. Marcus George spent nearly 30 years working at the Arkansas Democrat. It was his great love of journalism that led him and his wife, Ruby Lee George, to donate $228,000, to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for scholarships for journalism students. After Marcus George passed away in 2010 and Ruby George in 2014, their son, Mark George, made the donation to 糖心Vlog传媒LR on his parents鈥 behalf in January 2015. 鈥淓ducation was important to him and my mother both, but my father could never serve on public entities like the school board, because it would have been a conflict of interest. They had to find ways to serve on the ground without compromising his objectivity,鈥 Mark George said. Marcus George started his journalism career because of an enticing offer from his uncle, K. August Engel, the former owner, president, and general manager of the Arkansas Democrat.
This portrait of K. August Engel, the former owner, president, and general manager of the Arkansas Democrat, hangs in the Bailey Alumni Center.

This portrait of K. August Engel, the former owner, president, and general manager of the Arkansas Democrat, hangs in the Bailey Alumni Center.

My great uncle told my dad if he got a degree in journalism he would give him a job, which was kind of an attractive option,鈥 Mark George said. So Marcus George headed to the University of Texas to earn a degree in journalism. His studies were interrupted by a tour of duty as a navigator with the United States Air Force during World War II. Upon returning home, he went on a blind date set up by an Air Force buddy, which is how he met Ruby Lee. The two were married in 1945. He went back and finished his degree and then moved to Little Rock. Ruby George raised three children while her husband worked as the city editor at the Arkansas Democrat. Mark George remembers his mother as a kind, hard-working woman who was an excellent seamstress, a problem solver, and loved to teach swimming lessons during the summer. 鈥淪he didn鈥檛 go out searching for causes, but when she saw things that she did not agree with or realized something could be done better, she was not the person who sat back and said someone should do something about it. She was the kind of person who did something about it,鈥 Mark George said. At one point, Mark George recalled how his mother was not pleased about the lunches the elementary schools were serving her children. 鈥凌补迟丑别谤 than talking about it, she spent days and days at the school teaching them how to better prepare meals that were nutritious and delicious,鈥 he said. At the Arkansas Democrat, Engel made the same offer of a job to another nephew, Chase Stanley Berry, who was a first cousin to Marcus George. Berry started working at the Arkansas Democrat in 1945 in the advertising department. Upon Engel鈥檚 death in 1968, Marcus George took over as editor and Berry became the publisher of the Arkansas Democrat, and the cousins worked alongside each other until the newspaper was sold in 1974. Afterward, Marcus George became president of Arkansas Television, which owned KTHV-TV Channel 11, from which he retired after 20 years. 鈥淢y dad was very funny with an incredibly dry wit,鈥 Mark George said. 鈥淚t didn鈥檛 matter how public the place was, he would crack a joke. He was incredibly smart and hard working and dedicated. I never used a dictionary until I got to college, because I would just ask my dad. Words were his business.鈥 Since Engel was so instrumental in Marcus George鈥檚 journalism career, the Georges made the 糖心Vlog传媒LR donation in Engel鈥檚 name. 鈥淢y dad鈥檚 whole career was based off the kindness and thoughtfulness of Mr. Engel. He had been a civic leader in town and had taken an interest in the university, Little Rock University at the time. To honor him and his relationship to the university, the donation was made to promote the study of journalism,鈥 he said. The banquet room in the Bailey Alumni Center is also named Engel Hall after several of Engel鈥檚 nieces and nephews made a donation in his name. Mark George even carries the middle name of Engel after his great uncle, whom he remembers as a distinguished, old-fashioned newspaperman. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I ever saw my great uncle in anything other than a suit,鈥 he said. 鈥淗e was very distinguished, very much a civic leader. I remember he drove a big old Cadillac, a monstrous thing. He was a member of the Little Rock Country Club, and he liked to smoke cigars.鈥 In addition to his journalism career, Marcus George served on many charitable and civic boards, but he was most proud of his involvement with the Rotary Club. He served as president of Downtown Rotary Club 99 in 1979-80 and as Rotary International governor for District 6150 in 1982-83. ]]>

Palludan Family

Chancellor’s Leadership Corps Scholars Ryan (left) and Katherine (far right) with their mother Deborah Palludan the last time they were all together.

Ryan, 18, was found to have suffered from Loeys-Dietz syndrome, a disorder that affects the connective tissues throughout the body, especially major arteries. More recently, an unfathomable blow was dealt the Palludans when their 21-year-old daughter, Katherine, died in August following multiple heart surgeries. The multiple surgeries were related to complications from an initial surgery–one that stemmed from the fact that Katherine also had Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and she exhibited symptoms similar to her brother Ryan. Katherine, an anthropology major and magna cum laude graduate of 糖心Vlog传媒LR, was a Chancellor鈥檚 Leadership Corps (CLC) member, just like the younger brother she adored. She will be recognized posthumously during the morning December commencement ceremony. The Palludans are dealing with their grief one day at a time and honoring Katherine鈥檚 memory by adding her name to the award established over a year ago in their son鈥檚 name. The scholarship, now named the Katherine and Ryan Palludan Memorial Endowed Award, provides assistance to 糖心Vlog传媒LR students for the purchase of textbooks. The Palludans said they realized how hard it was for some families to deal with the rising costs of textbooks when they first sent Katherine to college. 鈥淜atherine and Ryan Palludan were both respected and loved by their peers in the Chancellor’s Leadership Corps. This is an amazing way to honor their legacies,鈥 said Nick Steele, coordinator of CLC at 糖心Vlog传媒LR. Already, the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Student Philanthropy Council has voted to designate any funds their organization raises to the Palludan scholarship, with a long-term goal of $15,000, according to Philanthropy Council co-presidents Chelsey Partain and Morgan Miller, who are also members of CLC. Preference for the award will be given to Arkansas students who demonstrate leadership and exhibit strong community service and who are pursuing majors in biology, nursing, geology, or anthropology. Academic excellence and financial need will also be strongly considered. To contribute, send a check payable to the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Foundation for the Katherine and Ryan Palludan Memorial Award, c/o 糖心Vlog传媒LR, 2801 S. University, Little Rock, AR 72204.
