Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, recipient of the 2014 Obie Award for Best New American Play,聽cleverly exposes the roles that we play in maintaining the melodramatic travesty of 鈥渨hiteness鈥 in contemporary America, and how race still functions to keep someone in her 鈥減lace.鈥 (The word 鈥渙ctoroon鈥 means 鈥渙ne-eighth black.鈥) Content includes mature language and themes and is not recommended for children. Performances are as follows:

Pre-show discussion panels with university faculty on melodrama, Louisiana Creole culture, racial stereotypes in popular media, and other issues relevant to An Octoroon and our times will take place 6:45-7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and 1:45-2:15 p.m. on Sunday. Post-show discussions with director Stacy Pendergraft and the actors will be after the Thursday and Friday shows. Ticket are $10 for general admission; $5 for faculty, staff and students; and $5 for military and seniors. The first production, 鈥淭he All Night Strut,鈥 will be staged Wednesday, Oct. 11, through Sunday, Oct. 15, in the University Theatre. Attendees will take a trip down memory lane, enjoying songs and dance from the 1930s and 40s. The fall dance performance, Dance Harvest 2017, will run from Thursday, Nov. 16, to Sunday, Nov. 19. Distinguished faculty and guest artists will perform center stage in the University Theatre with modern, jazz, and ballet styles of dance. The Theatre Department hopes to spark conversation with its spring performance of An Octoroon, a theatrical tale of race in present-day America. Performances will take place Wednesday, Feb. 21, through Sunday, Feb. 25, in the Haislip Theatre. The final production of the season will be the annual spring dance concert, BodyWorks 2018. Students whose work was selected for presentation at the American College Dance Association Conference, along with faculty members and guest artists, will perform Thursday, April 19, to Sunday, April 22. Most performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Dance Harvest 2017 and BodyWorks 2018 will have performances that begin at 7 p.m. All Sunday shows will begin at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the theatre鈥檚 Box Office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and can be purchased online.
