Doris received a $2,000 grant toward her one-month trip and is particularly interested in learning more about the language since she traveled to Morocco once before. 鈥淚 felt the language barrier between myself and the people I met when I traveled to Morocco with 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Model Arab League a few semesters ago,鈥 Doris said. 鈥淓ven without being able to speak the language, I felt the generosity and beauty of the people who I encountered. From the experiences I had, I felt the desire to learn Arabic so that I could see more of the culture and reciprocate some of the kindness that was shown to me.鈥 Doris, who will begin law school in the fall, also plans to use her improved language skills to serve as a legal advocate for immigrants. 鈥淚 would love to be able to serve different communities as an attorney and an advocate,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 am from an Irish immigrant family, which has motivated me to explore immigration and human rights law. Learning Arabic would enable me to serve a larger immigrant community.鈥 Gammill, who received a $2,500 grant and will travel abroad for two months, said the experience will help prepare him for his future career in foreign service. 鈥淚鈥檝e focused much of my undergraduate career on learning about the Arab world and plan to work in foreign service someday,鈥 Gammill said. 鈥淎rabic is a language that particularly interests me but also is particularly valuable in getting work in the U.S. State Department.鈥]]> Free Arabic class offered, Spring 2016 /news-archive/2016/02/16/free-arabic-class-offered-starting-feb-17/ Tue, 16 Feb 2016 22:58:59 +0000 /news/?p=63507 ... Free Arabic class offered, Spring 2016]]> The Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program has offered non-credit Arabic classes for several years. In the future, for-credit classes in Arabic will be offered for the first time to 糖心Vlog传媒LR students through a partnership with the Department of International and Second Languages. Dr. Abeer El-Anwar, an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, will teach the free beginner course this semester. She also will offer for-credit Elementary Arabic I and Elementary Arabic II in the fall. I believe this partnership and weaving language and multicultural understanding into the curriculum will establish avenues conducive to 糖心Vlog传媒LR’s commitment to 鈥榚ducating tomorrow’s global citizen,鈥欌 El-Anwar said. El-Anwar is a distinguished linguist who specializes in translation studies and ESL. She is a native speaker of Arabic with a doctorate in linguistics from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, who has taught various ESL and translation courses from 1999 until 2005. She joined 糖心Vlog传媒LR in 2007. Students who are taking the non-credit class this semester will be asked to purchase the workbook, 鈥Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds鈥 by Kristen Brustad and Mahmoud Al-Bbatal.
