While in Berlin, the group visited famous sites and museums, including the Charlottenburg Palace, Museum Island, and the Jewish Museum, and took a tour of the street art of Berlin. Outside Berlin, the students took trips to visit Dresden, a city that was heavily bombed during World War II and was previously known as the Jewel Box for its Baroque and Rococo city center, and Potsdam, the capital of the German federal state of Brandenburg that is site of several palaces. Larsen, who has previously lived in Berlin, said it was a memorable experience to revisit some of her favorite spots in Berlin with her students. 鈥淚t was exciting to go back to these places that I know and love and to see them through new eyes and to see my students be awed by this architecture and art,鈥 Larsen said. 鈥淚t was an exceptional group of students who were super engaged. This trip opened the world for the students and empowered them.鈥 In the upper right photo, the study abroad students visit the roof of the Reichstag building, home of the German parliament. It houses an art collection with a large scope of works by African American artists, Arkansas artists, and art of the Delta. McGibbony said she has spent her internship completing an inventory of all the pieces in the center鈥檚 permanent collection, researching Delta-based artists to update the artists鈥 profiles, and helping the center apply for reaccreditation. She is also organizing an exhibit on Dr. Lenore Shoults, the center鈥檚 curator, book, 鈥淗ere,鈥 which explores African-American artists from the Delta region. 鈥淚 love researching. I like reading different theories and concepts and ideas that people have about older art and past art movements. I like contemporary and modern art, but I think it鈥檚 interesting to read everyone鈥檚 ideas and theories where the artist is no longer present,鈥 McGibbony said. 鈥淎ll you have left is this visual representation of the artist鈥檚 thoughts and views from the time period.鈥 McGibbony graduated from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2014 with a Bachelor of Art degree with a concentration in studio art and a minor in art history. After working for Dillard鈥檚 for two years as an assistant buyer in product development, McGibbony decided to enhance her education with a graduate program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淚f you want to be a curator or work in a museum, it helps to have a master鈥檚 degree,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was important for me to take my art history education to the next level.鈥 The Art History concentration is designed for students who are interested in professional academic, museum studies, or arts management careers and prepares students for doctoral study. It offers a broad-based study of the history of visual expression and opportunities for advanced research projects. Art historians analyze and articulate the meaning and form of human experience as embodied in works of art. The field encompasses the world of art and architecture as it exists today and has been understood visually and verbally in the past. 鈥淎fter graduation, I would love to work as an assistant curator or a curator, just something in an arts collections or archive environment,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 would like to stay in Arkansas. I feel like Arkansas has a really up and coming art scene with great artists and events and museums in Arkansas that some people don鈥檛 even know about.鈥]]>
