The annual university picnic brought together employees, students, alumni, and community supporters to enjoy food, fun, and camaraderie.

Chancellor Christina Drale announced the start of the Centennial Campaign, a new capital campaign that celebrates the university鈥檚 100-year anniversary in 2027. The campaign has a goal of raising $250 million by 2027, making the campaign the largest fundraising effort in university history.

鈥淏BQ at Bailey is even more special this year,鈥 Drale said. 鈥淢oney raised in this campaign will benefit the campus community through student scholarships, program excellence, and the living and learning environments. The next five years will be busy and really exciting. Our hope is that you will contribute to the Centennial Campaign in your own way to make a difference for students who are here today and those who will be here in the future. Help us make the next 100 years as great as the first century at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.鈥

BBQ @ Bailey followed the Centennial Campaign Gala on Oct. 13. Centennial Campaign Co-chairs Alfred Williams and Jerry Damerow, who emceed the gala, were happy to spread support for the campaign to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock supporters at both events.

鈥淭his is just as important for the staff and faculty of this university to engage with the community as it is for the community to engage with the staff and faculty and students, and last night was the perfect example of everyone working together,鈥 Williams said. 鈥淲e got to follow up and keep going with this great event.鈥

鈥淟ast night was an opportunity for all of us to engage with donors and potential donors, and today is a good chance to engage with students,鈥 Damerow added. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what it’s all about 鈥 the students. Today is a special day and the frosting on the cake from a wonderful event last night.鈥

The start of the Centennial Campaign included a $6.75 million gift that benefits the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology in memory of the late Dr. Yupo Chan, who was the founding chair of the Department of Systems Engineering. The donors, Susan Chan and Alex Johnson, were honored during the gala event at the Fine Arts Building.

鈥淚 think the donors felt very honored and appreciated and are glad to be part of a new beginning for the engineering school,鈥 said Dr. Lawrence Whitman, dean of the Donaghey College of STEM. 鈥淭his is a great start to support students for the next 100 years of our university. The donors wanted to be a part of the beginning of many more gifts to the university.鈥

Paige Henry, a soccer player, was one of the dozens of student-athletes who volunteered their time to help set up and serve food during BBQ @ Bailey. Guests enjoyed lunch catered by Whole Hog 颁补蹿茅, dessert from Community Bakery, and music by Klassik Entertainment.

鈥淭his is a wonderful event with great energy, good food, and a lot of fun,鈥 Henry said. 鈥淚 enjoy volunteering to help out the university community.鈥

Loris Fullerton, a 1974 graduate and Alumni Association Board member, recalled her fondness for attending BBQ @ Bailey and connecting with old friends.

鈥淚 think this is a very cool way to get the students and alumni involved,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know a school that works harder than 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. It鈥檚 like a great hometown family to me, and BBQ @ Bailey is the place to be seen.鈥

Dr. Amar Kanekar, professor and graduate program coordinator for the Health Education and Health Promotion program, enjoyed returning to the event after not attending for several years.

鈥淚 think this is a great tradition to get to meet other people and learn about what is happening on campus,鈥 Kanekar said. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 be here last year because of the pandemic, but I am glad to be back. It鈥檚 a great opportunity to be out in the sun, and the food is great.鈥

Staff Senate President Ross Bradley and Past President Rosalie Shahan were hosting one of several booths representing 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus organizations during the picnic.

鈥淚t’s great seeing students, faculty, staff, and members of the community at this annual event and to hear about the Centennial Campaign on campus,鈥 Bradley said. 鈥淏BQ at Bailey is also a great way for campus organizations to promote their individual initiatives. We are here promoting the annual Staff Senate Helping Hands Food Drive, which helps provide food baskets to employees around the holidays in December.鈥

People can help 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock by joining the Alumni Association, contributing to annual fundraisers, making a donation, or putting the university in their estate plans. More information on the Centennial Campaign is available at /centennial.

Dr. Danyell Crutchfield Cummings, president of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Board of Directors, invited people to join the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Association, which annually offers around $100,000 in student scholarships, in addition to helping people create connections.

鈥淭his is one of my favorite events on the campus every year. It was the best opportunity to get together, eat, and enjoy some good weather,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e are alumni, current students, and supporters of our university and our students. Many of you may have benefitted from scholarships at this university. I know I did. Your membership dues will directly benefit general scholarships to help students graduate without debt.鈥

糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Launches Centennial Campaign to Raise $250 Million to Commemorate 100-Year Legacy of Excellence in Education /news-archive/2022/10/14/centennial-campaign-100/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 17:20:02 +0000 /news/?p=82406 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Launches Centennial Campaign to Raise $250 Million to Commemorate 100-Year Legacy of Excellence in Education]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has announced the largest fundraising effort in university history ahead of its 100-year anniversary in 2027. The Centennial Campaign aims to raise $250 million throughout the campaign.

鈥淭his campaign comes at a special moment in the history of this university,鈥 Chancellor Christina S. Drale said. 鈥淭he last 100 years have been an inspired journey to excellence. By raising these funds, we are ensuring that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will continue on that journey and continue to provide educational opportunities for generations of students to come.鈥

The university announced the public phase of its campaign at two events. On Thursday evening, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock hosted a kickoff event with key stakeholders. Then on Friday, the university formally announced the campaign to the university community at BBQ at Bailey.

In announcing the public phase of the campaign, the university announced it has already raised nearly $163 million toward its goal. Additionally, the total included a special gift announcement of a $6.75 million gift from the Yupo and Susan Chan Charitable Trust honoring Dr. Yupo Chan, the founding chair of the Department of Systems Engineering, who passed away in 2020. The gift is the fifth largest in university history, and it is the second largest endowed gift in university history. It provides $1.5 million to establish the Yupo Chan Director of the School of Engineering Endowment, $2 million for undergraduate student scholarships, and $3.25 million for graduate student scholarships.

“Dr. Chan served as the initial chair of systems engineering and brought engineering to our campus,鈥 said Dr. Lawrence Whitman, dean of the Donaghey College of STEM. 鈥淒r. Chan’s legacy will continue to positively impact engineering at our university by strengthening the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are grateful to the Chans for the transformational gift that will provide for the future of engineering on our campus.”

To date, more than 20,100 donors have supported the Centennial Campaign.

鈥淭his campaign celebrates our first 100 years and ensures a robust beginning to our second 100 years by reducing student debt, securing the best in instruction, and providing a great living-learning environment for the campus community,鈥 said Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for university advancement. 鈥淭he boldest fundraising campaign in the university鈥檚 history will empower students, enhance our academic programs, and transform our community and Arkansas for the better.鈥

The Centennial Campaign is centered around four key emphasis areas, all designed to support the university鈥檚 mission of improving students鈥 lives and enhancing communities. The four emphasis areas are student scholarships, student success initiatives, living & learning environment upgrades, and program excellence. Scholarships help ensure students have access to the high quality education 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provides. Since 2018, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has reduced its net price by more than 22% helping to ensure college is affordable. This campaign initiative will continue that effort.

Student success emphasizes the services 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provides to support the whole student, ensuring success in and out of the classroom through services such as tutoring, career coaching, and emergency support. It is many of these efforts that have helped 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock increase its returning student retention rate by 10% since last fall, and expanding these offerings will help ensure more students have the tools they need to succeed.

A great learning environment offers students the ability to learn in updated, state-of-the-art classrooms and labs. By having access to the latest technology, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is providing a game-changing atmosphere for students to learn. This emphasis area also centers on creating more campus environments for students to connect with peers and forge long-term relationships. Over the last year, the university has updated the Learning Commons gathering space in the Ottenheimer Library to allow for enhanced engagement with other students, and more campus gathering spaces are planned as part of this campaign.

Program excellence distinguishes 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock by helping the university recruit and retain talented faculty and researchers. By investing in our academic programs, we are able to ensure students continue to receive a high quality education. Offering internships, connections with industry, and opportunities to conduct research helps students succeed, graduate and then positively impact our communities.

Jerry Damerow and Alfred Williams are leading the Centennial Campaign Committee as co-chairs. The campaign committee also includes Chancellor Christina S. Drale, Provost Ann Bain, Ben Bailey, James Bobo, Bob Denman, Thomas Dickinson, Courtney Little, R.J. Martino, Don Riggin, Cheryl Shuffield, Bill Sowell and Michael Williams Sr.

鈥淚f we don鈥檛 build Arkansas, who will? We could give our support anywhere, but we鈥檝e found the best students are right here at home,鈥 said philanthropists Sherri and Jerry Damerow, who have made a planned gift of $1 million to support scholarships for science majors at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.

The campaign began its silent phase in 2017 and will conclude in 2027. Some of the donations have included a $25 million gift from an anonymous donor for scholarships and student success programs, a $5.5 million gift from the Donaghey Foundation to construct a new north to south promenade called Trojan Way and a new Library Plaza, and a $2.25 million gift from the Winthrop Rockefeller Charitable Trust to preserve and educate the public about the history of Arkansas and the contributions of Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller.

BBQ at Bailey Celebrates 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Support and Fellowship]]> 鈥淲e didn’t get the chance to do it last year, so the goal is to welcome back people to the campus, get students to come out, get to know everyone in the alumni center, and get to know other graduates,鈥 said Derrick Newby, associate director for alumni membership and engagement. 鈥淭ypically, we do this at the beginning of the year but we had to push it back to make sure everyone was safe.鈥 The enjoyment for the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock fellowship was a constant trend in conversations at the BBQ. 鈥淚t is so great to see everyone back together for BBQ at Bailey to see all the students, teachers and alumni all coming together to rally around this amazing school,鈥 said Heide Harrell (鈥10), executive committee member of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Board of Directors. 鈥淲ho doesn鈥檛 love some free BBQ on a beautiful October day?鈥 Harrell has a deep passion for the work that the faculty provides and the caliber of students who work hard to get their degrees. 鈥淚 am a proud graduate and advocate for this university,鈥 said Harrell. Career Services and other campus organizations attended the event to participate and raise awareness. 鈥淲e are promoting the Trojan Career Closet available for all students at the university,鈥 said Shannon Gwinn (98鈥), director of career services for the College of Business, Health, and Human Services. 鈥淲e want to make them aware of the fabulous items that they can come shop for. Whether you are going to a job interview and need a suit or need an outfit for an internship, we can help.鈥 The career closet has suits, sport coats, dresses, accessories, and plenty of ties. BBQ at Bailey highlights affection for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and alumni support]]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock welcomed the fall semester with a BBQ picnic at the Bailey Alumni and Friends Center on Sept. 5. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni enjoyed a delicious meal catered by Whole Hog 颁补蹿茅 with dessert from Community Bakery. 鈥淭his is the 13th annual lunch at Bailey. We kick off each academic year this way,鈥 said Kristi Smith, senior director of development and interim director of the Alumni Association. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a perfect way to get students and faculty and campus staff all together to mingle. It鈥檚 also a way for alumni to reconnect to the university and maintain friendships.鈥 Smith was appreciative of the many student volunteers who helped make the event a success. 鈥淭he baseball teams set up tables and the swim and dance teams have also helped with logistics. The Greek organizations are here, too,鈥 Smith said. James Bobo (鈥05), Alumni Board of Directors president-elect and chair of the membership committee, echoed his appreciation for the role students play in contributing to an atmosphere of community camaraderie. 鈥淭his is an awesome event. We鈥檙e excited to see so many students, friends, and staff!鈥 Bobo said. Approximately 2,100 people participated in the popular two-hour BBQ.

鈥淚 think BBQ at Bailey is the semester kickoff event the campus community most looks forward to attending,鈥 said Cassie Jo Gehring, accountant for the Office of Alumni and Development. 鈥淚t is very well attended and brings employees, faculty, alumni, and students together. We especially have seen a lot of university employees participating, and many people have joined the Alumni Association.鈥澨 In addition to helping make connections, the BBQ emphasized support for the Alumni Association, which annually provides approximately $145,250 in student scholarships. The Alumni Association gained 21 first-time members and 74 membership renewals during the BBQ, along with three lifetime memberships.听 Appreciation for the impact of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was a common thread in conversations at the BBQ. 鈥淢y education in radio, TV, and film paved the way for me to go on to do some fun things in my life,鈥 shared alumnus Daryl Stout (鈥83). 鈥淔or example, I am the volunteer examiner liaison for the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock hand radio club, and I run the amateur radio test at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Benton. Part of my education included journalism classes, and that made me a good proofreader. Now that I鈥檓 retired, I proofread for print screening projects and am in charge of a newsletter publication. I often reflect on how my education from this school is still relevant to my daily activities today.鈥 Greek organizations participated in the BBQ with booths to share information about each sorority and fraternity on campus. 鈥淏BQ at Bailey is an opportunity for us to meet a new set of freshman face-to-face,鈥 said Catie Ross, a junior studying business and human resources management who serves as director of campus activities for Chi Omega. 鈥淪ometimes, it鈥檚 easier for people to learn about Greek life by meeting us personally and having an actual conversation. We want people to feel comfortable getting to know us, as well as the other Greek organizations. BBQ at Bailey is one of the best times to help freshmen become aware.鈥 Appreciation for the uniqueness of Greek life at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was a common sentiment. Lucas Ray, a sophomore studying mechanical engineering, explained that he joined Delta Chi because of its emphasis on advancing justice, developing character, promoting friendship, and academic achievement.听

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 have to pretend to fit cookie-cutter expectations of being a certain type of person,鈥 Ray said. 鈥淥ur fraternity here encourages us to be the best versions of ourselves.鈥 Libby Walsh, a junior studying nursing and member of Kappa Delta, explained that bigger schools feel much different from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock because they have hundreds of members in a sorority chapter.听 鈥淏ut here, we can really get to know each other. We鈥檙e here for the real friendships,鈥 Walsh said. Kappa PSI president Kevin Davidson and Pike Kappa Alpha president Hunter Hobby emphasized the value of alumni relationships in their fraternities.听 鈥淲e鈥檙e visiting Mills High School next week to promote abstinence and safe sex practices,鈥 said Davidson, a junior studying mechanical engineering. 鈥淥ne of our alumni fraternity brothers is principal there, which has helped us make good connections and gain access to serving at the school.鈥澨 Representatives from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Campus Garden Alliance were on-site selling local honey and encouraging participation in the campus garden located along Fair Park Boulevard. Also on-site at the BBQ were representatives from Save 10, a movement to empower women to save for retirement.听 鈥淥ne of our 10-year goals is to empower people to save for housing and for a lifetime of financial security,鈥 said Cathianne Watkins of Southern Bancorp Community Partners. 鈥淲e encourage women to save 10 percent of their gross income for retirement.
