Joyce Elliott and will feature Brad Cushman, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Art and Design gallery director and curator; author Guy Lancaster; Dr. Brian Mitchell, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock history professor; Dr. Bobby L. Roberts, former 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock archivist and former Central Arkansas Library System executive director; and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock student Taemora Williams. Both events are free and open to the public, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP for the evening panel by calling 501-683-5239 or emailing publicprograms@clintonschool.uasys.edu. 鈥淭his new downtown facility will serve as a bridge to our main campus and as a center for showcasing the best of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥澨 Dr. Rogerson said. 鈥淚t will offer easy access to university resources, recruitment information, lectures and panel discussions for students, faculty, supporters and guests.鈥 The downtown location will feature Joe Jones鈥 1935 mural, The Struggle in the South, which was originally painted in the dining hall at Commonwealth College near Mena, Ark. The artwork includes vibrant and provocative depictions of struggling sharecroppers, coal miners under the watch of an overlord, and a black family in fear and agony of a lynching. Recently restored with a $500,000 grant from the , the 44-by-9 foot mural spans two sides of the reflection room. 鈥淭his extraordinary work of art will inspire new generations to study, discuss and create their own legacy of social justice and equality,鈥 Cushman said. 鈥淎s viewers take in this mural and its compelling imagery, we hope they will reflect on their civic responsibility to one another.鈥 Ross Owyong will serve as director of the new center. A graduate of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, Owyong will oversee the use of spaces for meetings, workshops, training sessions and events. The mural imagery depicts sharecropping, coal mining and lynching and was described in news accounts of the day as representing 鈥淭he Struggle in the South.鈥 Jones lived from 1909 to 1963 and worked amid the poverty of the Great Depression. His vibrant paintings achieved national acclaim in the 1930s and showcase the heart of American struggle 鈥 urban and rural, black and white, rich and poor. Commonwealth College closed in 1940, and the mural was taken from campus. In 1984, 糖心Vlog传媒LR Archives purchased the 44-by-8-foot mural in 29 pieces in 1984, after it was found in an old house south of Fort Smith. Thus began a decades-long effort to preserve the historic mural, according to Brad Cushman, director of 糖心Vlog传媒LR Art Gallery. 听 Restoration work began in 2010, and a piece of the mural was displayed at the exhibit at the Saint Louis Art Museum from 2010 to 2011. Following the exhibit, the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Gallery Program successfully obtained grant funding from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council to complete the restoration of the mural. Helen Houp Fine Arts Conservation Studio in Dallas completed work on the mural. 糖心Vlog传媒LR is working to raise funding for a permanent exhibition space for the mural on the main campus. 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 effort to restore the mural was recently featured in AY Magazine. The church will also hold its annual fall sale from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. St. Louis-born landscape painter and muralist Joe Jones painted 鈥淭he Struggle of the South鈥 in 1935 at the Commonwealth College in Mena, Arkansas. Jones achieved national recognition in the 1930s for his depictions of urban and rural scenes of the American heartland.
