Submissions should be less than 1,000 words and submitted online through the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock English department by 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. This contest is open to college students and the community at large. Individuals can use this opportunity to develop short, creative works and share their stories with the community.聽 The first 20 submissions in the following three categories will be judged: Cornbread Lover (grades 6-12), Hot Skillet Cornbreader (college student), and Cornbread Aficionado (community member, no age limit). A panel of scholars and authors will select the winners from each category, and winners will be invited to read at a special event on Tuesday, Oct. 22,聽 at South on Main in Little Rock. Select pieces will also be published in Rock City Eats and the Oxford American blog. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock got involved with the Cornbread Festival after Jeremy Ecke, chair of the English Department, reached out with the idea of creating a literature-themed event to accompany the festival. I had spent the summer researching and designing a syllabus for a new offering in southern literature,鈥 Ecke said. 鈥淥ne section of the class was dedicated to readings on food, community, and culture. In this section of the class, we crowdsourced cornbread recipes and selected a winner to compete in the competition: cornbread crostini with a side caesar salad.鈥 For more information, contact Ecke at jsecke@ualr.edu.]]> 糖心Vlog传媒LR English students to participate in Cornbread Festival /news-archive/2016/10/26/cornbread-festival-2016-2/ Wed, 26 Oct 2016 20:54:02 +0000 /news/?p=65604 ... 糖心Vlog传媒LR English students to participate in Cornbread Festival]]> Students taking Ecke鈥檚 Literature of the South course will participate in Little Rock鈥檚 fifth annual , set to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, on South Main Street in Little Rock. 鈥淭his Southern literature class hasn鈥檛 been taught for a while, so I wanted to teach it around home, community, and food,鈥 Ecke said. Ecke moved to Little Rock five years ago. After attending the Cornbread Festival for the past four years, he thought that it would be a great opportunity for his students to join the festivities. 鈥淭hrough this experience, I hope that the students will get a sense of how literature in the classroom connects to the community,鈥 Ecke said. 鈥淭his will show them that they can have fun and make real world connections outside of the classroom.鈥 During the festival, the English Department will sponsor a booth that allows attendees to use a typewriter to type brief poems, recipes, and flash fiction stories. While students from different areas within the department work the booth, Ecke and his class will compete in the cornbread recipe contest, with their own twist on a classic recipe. 鈥淭he entire department is excited about this event,鈥 Ecke said. 鈥淲e have several professors who think that their recipes are sure winners.鈥 The students and faculty, who will compete in the amateur division, will 聽prepare enough cornbread to feed more than 3,000 people. Ecke wants his Southern literature students to learn by doing and trying things they never thought they would. 鈥淚t鈥檚 interesting the way in which the course is put together, like an exploration of the South through my eyes,鈥 Ecke said. 鈥淚 also want to allow the students to teach me, too. Short works of fiction, flash fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction that explore the themes of food, culture, and community in the American South will be accepted. Submissions for the competition must be emailed to Dr. Jeremy Ecke, assistant professor of English, by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17. Contestants are allowed to submit two pieces. Each entry should be less than 1,000 words. The competition will be judged by a panel of 糖心Vlog传媒LR writers. Winners will be invited to read at a special event with Caroline Randall Williams, author of 鈥淪oul Food Love,鈥 from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Bernice Gardens. Top submissions also will be published in Rock City Eats. The English Department will showcase the work at its Cornbread Festival booth on Saturday, Oct. 29. Contest entries should be attached to an email to Ecke in either a Microsoft Word or PDF file format. Submissions should not contain names or other identifying information. In the email, participants should list the submission titles, affiliation with 糖心Vlog传媒LR, and availability to attend the Bernice Gardens event if selected as a winner.
