Established in Greenbrier, Ark., as as antidote for bored, at-risk students, the EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology) educational model focuses on student-driven service projects accomplished by using teamwork and cutting-edge technology.

Students identify problems in their local communities and use tools such as global positioning system and geographic information system (GPS/GIS) mapping, computer assisted design (CAD) software, 3-D animation suites, virtual reality development, and more to develop solutions, collaborating with civic and other groups in the process.

“EAST has been instrumental in helping students develop an interest in using math and science to solve community problems,鈥 Gealt said. 鈥淓AST students have impressed me with their enthusiasm and strong work effort. I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to help EAST in their educational efforts.”

Earlier this year, a team led by Gealt and College of Education Dean Angela Sewall established a collaboration between their colleges to recruit more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) undergraduates into teacher prep programs so they can teach in these critical areas in public schools.

The new 糖心Vlog传媒LRTeach program answers Gov. Mike Beebe鈥檚 call to increase the number of secondary school science and mathematics teachers by recruiting more STEM 鈥 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics 鈥 undergraduate students into public schools.

The Governor’s Workforce Group selected 糖心Vlog传媒LR to receive $216,000 to support participation in the national UTeach program. Other state universities selected in the program were the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and University of Central Arkansas.

The ultimate goal of 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 collaboration is to replicate the UTeach program that started at the University of Texas in Austin and has been replicated at universities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, and more.

Last August, Beebe announced a $2.68 million initiative involving several programs, including UTeach, New Tech High Schools, where 聽where students are taught practical applications for their class programs; and EASTcore, a program to expose students to Project-Based Instruction in STEM disciplines.

NSF Grant to Advance Chemistry]]> chemistry at 糖心Vlog传媒LR, has received a $200,000 National Science Foundation grant to develop an intercollegiate course in cheminformatics 鈥 the modeling of chemical and related biological information on computers. Belford, chair of the American Chemical Society鈥檚 Division of Chemical Education Committee on Computers in Chemical Education, will work in collaboration with Dr. David J. Wild, director of the Indiana University Cheminformatics Program, to pioneer the use of the Semantic Web and Distance Education. The goal will be to bring high-impact education on practical informatics and cheminformatics techniques to chemistry undergraduates in a wide range of universities and smaller colleges. Their team will include a variety of experts in cheminformatics, chemical education, and information sciences. The intercollegiate course will be hosted by ACS CCCE. 糖心Vlog传媒LR is the lead institution for the collaborative project. 鈥淎dvances in cheminformatics over the past couple decades have been so rapid that the traditional undergraduate curriculum has not kept up,鈥 Belford said. 鈥淚t will be a significant competitive asset for our students to be cognizant of these new technologies when they graduate.鈥 The goal of the grant is two-fold 鈥 to bring faculty up to par with recent advances and to provide students with these skills. 鈥淔or students to graduate with the skills they need to excel as chemists they not only need to know the foundations and lab skills central to the science, but they also need to know how to communicate the results of their work, how to acquire and review the results of others’ work, and increasingly how to use computational and informatics techniques as part of their scientific discovery process,鈥 Belford said. According to Belford, this is more than just moving scientific communications beyond the traditional Gutenberg-era printed document. 鈥淪ure social and semantic technologies are impacting the scientific discovery process by changing how scientists share and communicate information, but there is another aspect of cheminformatics which could be changing the very nature of how we solve problems,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat is, cheminformatic advances are changing the nature of the cognitive artifacts we use to represent and manipulate information, which in turn has the potential to enable the development of new schema for problem solving that could have a profound impact on the practice of science.鈥 Belford joined the 糖心Vlog传媒LR faculty in 2002 from the University of West Virginia where he was a visiting assistant professor of chemistry.
