The deserving recipient will receive a $1,000 cash award. Dr. Daryl Rice, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, said the new award recognizes the importance and expanding role academic advisors have in serving 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 students and helping them be successful in a changing college environment. 鈥淭he vital importance of good academic advising to student success has been recognized across the country,鈥 Rice said. 鈥淎dvising used to be viewed as merely informing students of the courses to register for in order to stay on track to graduation. It still includes that, but the increasing professionalization of advising has expanded the role, which now includes help with career exploration to life coaching and much in between. It鈥檚 great that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will recognize excellence in professional advising alongside outstanding teaching, research, and service among faculty.鈥 Professional academic advisors who have been employed by 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for at least one year and hold a position below the rank of assistant dean are eligible for the award. A five-member selection committee comprised of one staff member, student, alumnus, faculty member, and administrator will choose the winner, who will be announced at the Staff Achievement Awards ceremony on Friday, April 26. Nominees will be evaluated on qualities and practices that include, but are not limited to: strong interpersonal skills; efforts to create a caring, helpful, and positive relationship with advisees; effective monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals; supportive of the needs of a diverse student population; and knowledge of institutional policies and procedures, campus resources, and appropriate referral activities. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students, alumni, and employees can show their favorite advisors some love by filling out a nomination by 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14. To make a nomination, visit the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost website and click on the 鈥淣ominate an Outstanding Advisor鈥 section. Once nominated, the nominee will be notified and must submit an application packet by 5 p.m. Monday, March 4, to be considered for the award. Learning Communities offer students extra support to succeed in college]]> One of the keys to college success is having a strong support system. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 offer just that – a network of peers, professors, and mentors who help students make the transition into college, academically and socially. The overall goal is to increase student retention by creating a strong support system for students. The communities are of various kinds. Most include academic courses with professors who work together. 鈥淢aking connections is the overarching theme,鈥 said Daryl Rice, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and student success. 鈥淪tudents often go into one class, walk out, and then don鈥檛 apply what they learned to another class. These communities help open their eyes to those connections, that what they learn in one class has relevance to another.鈥 Emily Junkans, a junior Donaghey Scholar, served as a supplemental instructor, or study group leader, last year in the Explore community. She attended Dr. Adriana Lopez-Ramirez鈥檚 Introduction to Sociology classes and then led discussion-based review sessions for students. 鈥淢y role was to review the material from the class to prepare them for weekly exams,鈥 she said. 鈥淓ven though the review sessions added an extra hour a week in a classroom to their schedules, I felt strong engagement from the students. Many expressed that they felt more prepared for the weekly exams after the sessions. As they grew more confident, they often surprised me and challenged me with fresh topics and examples distinct from the ones we had already seen in class or in the book. 鈥淢any of them did activities together outside of class,鈥 Junkans said. 鈥淭hey had an active group chat, and before and after the review sessions they would often talk about the other classes they shared with each other and give each other reminders about upcoming assignments.鈥 Aside from the academic support, Learning Communities also offer students a chance to engage socially and develop friendships. 鈥淩etention literature and experience have shown that for students, what takes place outside the classroom is just as important as what happens inside the classroom,鈥 Rice said. Students in Learning Communities have the option of living in the same residence hall areas, which helps foster social interaction and provides the added benefit of mentoring and tutoring by the resident assistants who are part of the community team. Some of the classes are conducted in the Commons residential area, which provides a taste of residential life even for commuting students. Each community caters to a group of students with similar needs and interests and has specific academic requirements. Three types of communities will be open in fall 2019: Soar Learning Community The SOAR group is comprised of students who need to sharpen the reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in all courses. Students will enroll in two courses: Academic Literacy (RHET 0321) and First Year Experience (PEAW 1300). Students who live on campus may be placed together on the same floor of a resident hall, but there isn鈥檛 a requirement to live in housing. About five SOAR communities will run, Rice said. Explore Learning Community Students in the Explore community will take three core classes: First Year Experience (PEAW 1300) Composition I (RHET 1311), and Introduction to Sociology (SOCI 230). Supplemental Instruction will be available. Again, students who live on campus may be placed together on the same floor of a resident hall, but there isn鈥檛 a requirement to live in housing. Residential, Themed: Women in Leadership Community New this fall will be a themed community focused on developing leadership skills for women. Students will live on the same floor in their housing. The community will not require students to take specific courses, but they will participate in co-curricular activities with personnel from Student Affairs and Academic Affairs.]]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock advances centralized advising model for undergraduate students /news-archive/2018/02/06/centralized-advising/ Tue, 06 Feb 2018 23:31:47 +0000 /news/?p=69274 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock advances centralized advising model for undergraduate students]]> Beginning with students admitted for the summer and fall 2018 semesters, most new and transfer undergraduate students will be advised in the Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising for their first 45 credit hours. The advising center will be located on the third floor of the Student Services Center, where five new offices are being renovated for the advisors. All continuing students will be advised in the current manner and will not switch to centralized advising. While each college will have a lead advisor in the Office of Undergraduate Academic Advising, all advisors will be cross-trained and able to provide assistance to any student. Dr. Daryl Rice, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, said centralized advising would offer many benefits to new students. 鈥淐entralized advising makes it easier for new students to find the correct site for advising, and it makes it possible to advise incoming students during summer orientation,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his summer, we will have eight orientation sessions for first-time college students and five for transfer students. We can also more easily implement retention efforts aimed at first-year students.鈥 Donaghey Scholars, as well as students who are pursuing the Bachelor of Arts of Applied Science and select programs in the College of Education and Health Professions, will be exempt from centralized advising due to special complexities in the completion of the programs. The College of Education and Health Professions program exceptions include nursing, social work, audiology and speech pathology, elementary and middle childhood education, and American Sign Language. These five programs will be evaluated in the spring 2019 semester to see if they can be converted to centralized advising. 鈥淭here are many moving parts to making the transition to centralized advising, but I could not be happier with the cooperation everyone is showing,鈥 Rice said. 鈥淚 am especially grateful for the work that Dr. Trakenya Dobbins, director of the Office of Undergraduate Advising, has been putting in. I鈥檓 sure we鈥檒l make some mistakes and have to tweak some processes along the way, but if the cooperation across campus continues, we鈥檒l succeed.鈥漖]> Daryl Rice named associate vice chancellor of academic affairs /news-archive/2017/06/07/daryl-rice-associate-vice-chancellor-academic-affairs/ Wed, 07 Jun 2017 14:13:54 +0000 /news/?p=67291 ...
