IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. However, they are unable to prepare tax returns for individuals who are self employed or contribute to a health savings account. Tax preparation and filing assistance will be available on a walk-in basis every Wednesday through April 3 from 1-6:30 p.m. in Reynolds Business Center Room 104. The center will be closed on March 20 due to spring break. Taxpayers have an option to prepare their own free simple federal and state tax return using web-based tax preparation software using an onsite computer. To have a return prepared by a volunteer, members of the public should bring a valid photo identification, Social Security card, W-2s, 1099 forms, a copy of last year鈥檚 tax return, and any other information and forms concerning income and expenses for 2018. Faculty members from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Accounting and students from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi have been training for months to provide tax help for the public. 鈥淲e believe this service to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students, staff, faculty, and the general public will fill the needs of taxpayers who do not have the funds to pay for-profit tax preparers for simple returns,鈥 said Cynthia Johnson, an accounting instructor in the College of Business and faculty advisor of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock VITA program. Members of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Beta Alpha Psi started the VITA program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock last year after learning about it at a conference in 2016. Gu finds second home a world away]]> Gu has been a student at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock since August of 2016 and is pursuing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in accounting and is set to graduate in May of 2020. Originally from Jiaxing, China, a large city with a population of over 4 million, Gu enrolled in a foreign exchange program when she was in high school and soon left for the United States. The host family that chose her lived in Prattsville, a small town in Grant County with a population of about 300. They had a daughter the same age as Gu, and both girls attended high school in nearby Poyen. 鈥淢y host family is my second family. My host sister is my sister,鈥 said Gu. 鈥淚 still go home to China for holidays, but while I鈥檓 here they are my home.鈥 In her first year in Arkansas, Gu developed an interest in accounting from her host mom, a CPA, who introduced her both to what she does in her career as well as how taxes and other financial systems operate in the United States. At Poyen High School, Gu also was mentored by her guidance counselor, who happens to be the mother of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor鈥檚 Leadership Corps Program Coordinator Amber Wolf. Gu soon decided that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was where she wanted to go. 鈥淪he told me about 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and CLC, and about what her daughter did. When I got here they made everything so easy. Amber, in particular, has made everything less stressful for me, and I鈥檓 really lucky to have her here,鈥 said Gu. 鈥淚 got in touch with International Student Services next. They鈥檙e really sweet and they know what they鈥檙e doing, and Miss Chloe is my fave!鈥 At 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Gu has found a place where she can develop academically, professionally, and personally. Aside from CLC, she also joined Chi Omega, which she describes as 鈥渢he best sisterhood I could ask for.鈥 She has served as president of the Chinese Student and Scholars Association and is currently working toward membership in Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting honor society. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock is a small campus, but everyone is very kind and welcoming,鈥 Gu said. 鈥淚 also enjoy the multiculturalism and how everyone here is from a different background. I think it鈥檚 great how not everyone here is a traditional student. I鈥檝e gotten to meet so many kinds of people because of that.鈥 Although her major is in accounting and finance, Gu says that her true passion lies in fashion, in which she hopes to build a career. 鈥淭his may sound weird, but I just love fashion,鈥 Gu said. 鈥淚 love everything from streetwear to high-end things. I鈥檓 hoping that one day I can use my business background that I鈥檓 getting here to work in marketing or something similar in the fashion industry.鈥 In her relatively short time here, Gu says that above all else the state of Arkansas continues to impress her, and she plans on staying as long as she can. 鈥淕rowing up in a big, crowded city in China I had never seen nature like we have in Arkansas,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 still seeing things every day that really put things into perspective. Little Rock is such a great city, and I鈥檓 thankful that I get to study here. I plan on staying involved for as long as and in any way that I can.鈥漖]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Accounting Department joins Accounting Blockchain Coalition /news-archive/2018/10/30/accounting-blockchain-coalition/ Tue, 30 Oct 2018 13:30:32 +0000 /news/?p=72477 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Accounting Department joins Accounting Blockchain Coalition]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Accounting has recently joined the Accounting Blockchain Coalition (ABC), a multi-stakeholder group of industry leaders in accounting, education, technology, finance, and law.聽 鈥淭he 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Accounting has joined the Accounting Blockchain Coalition, an industry think tank, to proactively explore business and accounting implications of the adoption of blockchain and related technologies,鈥 said Dr. Kyleen Prewett, associate professor of accounting. 鈥淭he coalition does not set standards, but seeks to analyze and anticipate regulatory, tax, internal control, accounting and auditing issues and develop best practices for organizations adopting blockchain technologies.鈥 The Accounting Blockchain Coalition is a non-profit, industry association that serves as a forum for businesses and organizations to develop and share information on accounting matters relevant to digital assets and distributed ledger technology, including blockchain. “The ABC added 35 members from a variety of disciplines focused on creating a knowledge-sharing organization for the accounting, education, technology, finance, and law sectors that will inform the industry on best practices in accounting and taxation as changes and resulting opportunities are created by the implementation of blockchain technology,鈥 said President David Deputy. The coalition offers a platform for members to contribute their knowledge and expertise while fostering best practices. Accounting Society raises 22k in CPA educational event]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Accounting Society raised $22,000 through its annual continuing professional education event.聽 The proceeds will support Accounting Society programming, including service projects and travel grants for students to attend and present at professional conferences. Nineteen Accounting Society students hosted nearly 175 certified professional accountants for a full day of programming on Dec. 13, which included topics like fraud, cyber security, forensic accounting, networking, tax, state board ethics, and the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock accounting faculty members Dr. Cynthia Johnson and Dr. Cynthia Taylor and Accounting Society president Lukas Steed organized the event where professionals earned up to eight hours of continuing professional education: four hours in accounting, one in tax, one in state board ethics, as well as two in general continuing education. A team from the Association for Information Systems Student Chapter provided invaluable assistance in organizing the event by automating several of the event鈥檚 manual processes.
