The certificate is designed for students in academic programs that do not have enough flexible hours to complete a second major or minor in Spanish. However, students who are majoring or minoring in Spanish are eligible to complete the certificate. Upon completing the certificate, students will be able to converse and communicate at a basic level in Spanish and will have the practical skills, knowledge, and resources to use Spanish effectively and ethically in the workplace. In order to finish the certificate, students must complete Intermediate Spanish 1 and II, Translation Studies, an interdisciplinary area studies course at the 3000 or 4000 level, along with a choice between Conversation and Presentation for Spanish or Writing for Spanish. The 15-hour certificate in the Department of World Languages can be taken completely online. Students who can demonstrate a proficiency in Spanish can enter the certificate program without taking Intermediate Spanish 1 and II. For Little Rock native and senior Forrest Goss, the program has provided a learning experience that has proven to be beneficial. Not only have his Spanish skills greatly improved, but Goss gained connections and insight into the Hispanic community. 鈥淗e is a gifted Spanish student whose study of the language is motivated by public service and social justice, so our new structured internship program fits him well,鈥 said Erin Finzer, chair of the Department of International and Second Language Studies. During the spring semester, interns were placed with El Z贸calo, Children International, Twelfth Street Clinic, Shepherd’s Hope Clinic, and Harmony Clinic. After meeting with the organization, El Z贸calo caught Goss鈥檚 immediate interest. He finished the internship during the spring semester, but continues to volunteer this summer. The nonprofit organization serves as an immigrant resource center for the central Arkansas Hispanic community. The goal of El Z贸calo is to promote a dignified life for immigrants and foster community-wide understanding through education. El Z贸calo offers a food pantry, English as a Second Language classes, and assistance in finding resources to serve the Hispanic community in Little Rock. Goss works with the food pantry program. His main responsibilities include picking up food from the Arkansas Food Bank and translating or interpreting for clients. With a few exceptions, most clients at the food pantry do not speak English. Goss also assists in communication between guest presenters and El Z贸calo clients. Different organizations in the community visit El Z贸calo to offer helpful information, such as the Arkansas Food Bank, which will send representatives to present information on food stamp benefits. Most recently, Goss has been leading classes in El Z贸calo鈥檚 program, Cooking Matters, sponsored by the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance. Forrest Goss teaches cooking at El Zocalo. The organization supplies funding, training, and educational materials to conduct a six-week course on cooking and nutrition through Cooking Matters. The program focuses on ways to eat healthy on a budget, practice safe cooking techniques, and promote cooking and eating as quality family time. Participants are also given a bag of groceries with the ingredients to make the recipes at home. Goss鈥 internship has helped him learn about the intricacies of nonprofit work, which is something he may be involved with in his future. 鈥淚 have learned a lot about the experiences of the Hispanic community and the overwhelming struggles that many Hispanic residents face,鈥 Goss said. 鈥淚t has been a blessing and a learning experience, to say the least.鈥  ]]> 糖心Vlog传媒LR offers Free Turkish classes /news-archive/2016/03/11/ualr-free-turkish-classes/ Fri, 11 Mar 2016 14:42:51 +0000 /news/?p=63701 ... 糖心Vlog传媒LR offers Free Turkish classes]]> 糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Turkic Cultural Student Association now offers free Turkish language classes, providing students with an opportunity to learn a critical and widely used foreign language. The class is considered an extracurricular activity and is focused on business and personal travel skills. It meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Stabler Hall Room 202. Though the class began on Feb. 24, anyone interested in joining is welcome. The course is designed to teach participants basic conversation skills. In-class activities combine grammar instruction and cultural exchanges in a warm atmosphere. Over Turkish tea and snacks, class attendants learn to introduce themselves, understand and have daily dialogues, and succeed in business and tourist trips to Turkish-speaking regions without needing to speak English. As Turkey expands its participation in the global community, the need for skilled speakers is bound to rise as well. Corporations, governments, and other organizations promoting cooperation in the Middle East work more and more with Turkey and Turkish businesses. 聽 Turkish belongs to a family of languages spoken in eastern Europe, central Asia, and Siberia. Each language in this family is closely similar to Turkish, opening up Turkish speakers to a wider realm of geopolitical significance.
