This will allow students to complete their graduate degree one year early. Additionally, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has announced an online graduate degree program in health education and promotion that begins in the spring 2022 semester. 鈥淗ealth education is a growing field within the public health domain,鈥 said Dr. Amar Kanekar, graduate coordinator of health education and promotion. 鈥淯.S. Department of Labor statistics show almost 60,000 health education specialists working in the United States in 2019 and a projected industry growth rate of 11 percent between 2018 and 2028. It鈥檚 an exciting opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing work in health education and promotion.鈥 The average mean wage for health education specialists is approximately $62,000 per year. Growth is being driven by efforts to improve health outcomes and to reduce healthcare costs through teaching people healthy behaviors and explaining how to better use available healthcare services. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Master of Science in Health Education and Promotion degree is designed to provide professional educational opportunities and prepare students for careers as wellness directors and health education practitioners including certified health education specialists, researchers, health department personnel, worksite health promotion, and more. The online degree will make the program more accessible for students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, where many students are pursuing virtual learning. 鈥淭his fully online master鈥檚 degree makes a college education more accessible for international students and domestic students who prefer to study online,鈥 Kanekar said. 鈥淭he courses are designed to align its objectives with the areas of responsibilities and competencies set forth by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing to enable students to take CHES and MCHES examinations.鈥 Certified health education specialists can work in a variety of fields related to program coordination and management, health education, community health services, advocacy, curriculum building, etc. Students have the opportunity to improve their intellectual and professional skills through advanced classroom instruction, participation in behavioral research, and an opportunity to engage in community service and learning activities. Additionally, this program has a strong research focus as a requirement via a thesis or a project that hones student research skills and prepares them for pursuing doctoral-level education. Graduate Spotlight on Tyra Robinson]]> Tyra Robinson will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in health education and promotion and a minor in health and exercise science. After graduation, she plans to go to graduate school to become a licensed physical therapist. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am from McGehee, Arkansas, and graduated from McGehee High School in 2015. I played basketball in junior high and high school, and I was also a majorette.聽 My mom and the majority of my family still live in McGehee, and my dad lives in Little Rock. Moving to Little Rock was a huge change for me. My hometown only has only one stoplight, and it seems like Little Rock has one million. How did you develop an interest in physical therapy? My mother was a beautician for many years. While she was studying to get her education degree in 2010, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and had to have her wrist replaced. I went to all the physical therapy sessions with her, and that鈥檚 when I decided I wanted to become a physical therapist. I like to help people and watch them grow. Why did you choose 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock? I transferred here from University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff because 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock had more opportunities in my chosen field. What were some of your favorite courses? My all time favorite course was anatomy. I love studying the human body and how it works. It was a difficult class, but that鈥檚 what made it enjoyable. Did you work while you were going to school? Previously, I worked at Walmart, and now I work as a physical therapy technician at Physical Therapy Institute, which is an outpatient clinic. A PT technician walks patients through their exercises after the physical therapist evaluates them. Basically, we are 鈥渂aby鈥 physical therapists. Who were some of your mentors? Dr. Janea Snyder was a huge help during my academic career. She helped me transfer credits, schedule my classes, and advised me on what to do to continue my education. What is your favorite memory of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock? I enjoyed watching Little Rock Trojans basketball (both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚) teams and attended all home games.聽 How are you going to celebrate your graduation? My family is going to have a cookout for me. Then we are going to watch the McGehee High School football team play at War Memorial Stadium. Right now, we are undefeated and #1 in the state for AAA division! What is your advice for new students? No matter what life throws at you, go with it. School can be an obstacle course, but if you stay the course you will succeed. You have to motivate yourself along the way. You are your biggest cheerleader. Evans will graduate with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in health education and promotion. In January, he will start graduate school at 糖心Vlog传媒LR with the goal of one day becoming a professor of health education at 糖心Vlog传媒LR. Evans is especially grateful for his mentors in the 糖心Vlog传媒LR School of Counseling, Human Performance and Rehabilitation, Dr. Britney Finley and Dr. Janea Snyder, for helping with his studies. 鈥淚 want to thank them for always supporting and guiding me in the right direction in this field, because I want to be just like them. They are my idols,鈥 Evans said. Although his mother will not be able to see him graduate, he will be reunited with the older sister he has not seen in over a year and a half. Evans thinks it is fitting that his sister, Vashanti Williams, will see him graduate, since she is the one who inspired him to become a teacher. 鈥淢y big sister is a teacher for people with special education in Pine Bluff,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 have wanted to be a teacher since junior high. It is going to be very emotional to meet up and celebrate an accomplishment like this.鈥

Facing challenges

Evans has faced many challenges on his path to higher education. He is a five-year member of the Arkansas National Guard, serving as a radio operator and communications specialist. 鈥淚n my unit, I am the man in the middle who has a backpack and a phone and is telling you what the orders are,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檓 like the guy in the movies who tells you when an airstrike is coming.鈥 During his time in the National Guard, Evans鈥 squad leader, Sgt. First Class Charles Beck, became like a father to him. Sadly, Beck passed away from stomach cancer in May 2015. 鈥淗e was not my biological father, but he was the only father figure in my life,鈥 he said. 鈥淗e was my squad leader and a great man. He was very respectful, and he always taught me to just stay on the right path and be kind to everyone.鈥 After the loss of his father figure, Evans鈥 grades slipped. However, he found support in his best friend, John Barnes, and through 糖心Vlog传媒LR Student Support Services. 鈥淎ll of our professors have motivated me, but I have to shout out to Student Support Services in the TRIO programs,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淭hey always made me feel like I am never alone. Ms. Julie Shelby always helped me.鈥

Giving back

Going into health education, Evans has always felt an urge to help others. During his internship, Evans was able to work at a wellness center in Atlanta, Georgia, to spread awareness of HIV and work on a suicide prevention hotline for African American gay men. During his internship, Evans is thankful he met a fellow advocate, Randall Whipple, who helped him come to terms with his own identity as an African American gay man. 鈥淩andall helped me realize that there is nothing wrong with my sexuality, and he helped me realize that I make my own happiness.鈥 As he thinks about the many people in his life who have helped him reach this point, Evans has a special message for the person who inspired him the most. 聽 鈥淭hank you, Mom. You were afraid as I grew up that I would not make friends. You were afraid that I was not going to get out in the world and live,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淚 am living, I have friends, and I have a life that you would be proud of.鈥]]>
