Matson Begins New Tenure as Faculty Senate President at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> Faculty Senate and University Assembly with the first Faculty Senate meeting of the new school year on Aug. 26. 鈥淚 am excited to participate in making 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock better and helping the university continue to recover from the pandemic,鈥 Matson said. 鈥淭his will be a good finish to my academic career because I do plan to retire after my two-year term as Faculty Senate president.鈥 Matson has served multiple terms on the Faculty Senate since the 1980s. She鈥檚 been a continuous member since 2012 and has served as vice president since 2013. Over the summer, Matson joined 21 other faculty senate leaders from across the country in Houston to discuss national shared governance issues during a meeting of the National Council of Faculty Senates. 鈥淥ne of the things I鈥檇 like to do this year is reach out to Faculty Senate presidents across the state,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 hope to reinvigorate a commitment across campus on the importance of shared governance in faculty and curriculum issues.鈥 Matson has been a part of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for nearly four decades when she joined the Department of English in 1983. She served as the freshman composition coordinator from 1986 to 1992, when she made a move to the provost鈥檚 office to serve as the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. In 2001, Matson returned to the Department of Rhetoric and Writing where she has been teaching full time ever since. Earlier this year, she donated $25,000 to create an endowed scholarship for rhetoric and writing students. During the campus visit, members of the team will ask questions of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty, staff, students, and visitors. It鈥檚 important for members of the university community to be familiar with the five criteria used to evaluate the institution. Criterion 2, 鈥淚ntegrity: Ethical and Responsible Conduct,鈥 evaluates whether or not the university and governing board follow their own processes and procedures. Under Criterion 2, institutions must also assure peer reviewers that they present themselves clearly and completely to students and the public and that they are committed to academic freedom and the pursuit of truth. 鈥淭his criterion focuses on effective, transparent oversight and accountability, as well as responsible resource allocation and decision-making,鈥 said Dr. Erin Finzer, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and chair of the Higher Learning Commission Steering Committee. 鈥淭his criterion focuses on whether or not the institution establishes and follows its own policies to ensure fair and ethical treatment,鈥 Finzer said. 鈥淭he criterion also focuses on consumer protection and that we present ourselves to the public with transparency and honesty. HLC also wants to make sure that we protect academic freedom on this campus. A quality institution takes stewardship seriously, operating with integrity and accountability by fostering a culture of documentation and transparency.鈥 The core components of Criterion 2 include: 2.A. The institution operates with integrity in its financial, academic, personnel, and functions; it establishes and follows policies and processes for fair and ethical behavior on the part of its governing board, administration, , and staff. 2.B. The institution presents itself clearly and completely to its students and to the with regard to its programs, requirements, and staff, costs to students, , and accreditation relationships. 2.C. The governing board of the institution is sufficiently autonomous to make decisions in the best interest of the institution and to assure its integrity. 2.D. The institution is committed to freedom of expression and the pursuit of truth in teaching and learning. 2.E. The institution鈥檚 policies and procedures call for responsible acquisition, discovery and application of knowledge by its , students, and staff. Members of the university community can prepare for questions about Criterion 2 by familiarizing themselves with where to find 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock policy documents, such as administrative pages, faculty/staff/student handbooks, governance documents, policy pages, and consumer information pages. Brian Berry named co-chair of Higher Learning Commission Accreditation Steering Committee]]> Dr. Brian Berry will help lead reaccreditation efforts at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as the new faculty co-chair of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Higher Learning Commission Accreditation Steering Committee.听 In this position, Berry, chair of the Department of Chemistry, will work closely with Dr. Erin Finzer, interim associate vice chancellor for academic affairs for continuous improvement, to help the university maintain Higher Learning Commission standards, coordinate university-wide assessment, and prepare for the Higher Learning Commission site visit in 2020. 鈥淭he position is a very important one to ensure a successful reaccreditation process for the university,鈥 Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Velmer Burton said. The is a regional institutional accreditor that accredits higher education institutions in 19 states. Colleges and universities maintain reaccreditation through evaluation on mission, integrity through ethical and responsible conduct, teaching and learning, and resources, planning, and institutional effectiveness. 鈥淎ccreditation assures our students, their families, and those in the state who fund higher education that we are diligent about maintaining standards and that we are continuously assessing our programs and using that data to improve what we do as an institution of higher learning,鈥 Berry said. Berry earned his doctorate of applied science in applied chemistry from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. After serving as a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, he returned to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock as an assistant professor of chemistry in 2008. He has since served the university in a number of supporting and leadership roles, including recently serving on the Strategic Planning Task Force for the past year, which is an important component of the Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation process. Berry is seeking nominations for five 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty and staff members to serve on a new Accreditation Compliance Taskforce through fall 2019. The members should include faculty and staff who have experience in higher education administration, student support services, student affairs, data, research, and face-to-face, online, and concurrent teaching.
