Panel members include Dr. Rebecca Glazier, associate professor of political science, Dr. Abeer El-Anwar, instructor of Arabic, and Dr. Neveen Shafeek Amin, assistant professor of sociology.听 The panel discussion will consider the role of religion in the Middle East, the problem with generalizing the Middle East as one homogenous, monolithic region/culture, how the relationship between the U.S. and Middle East affect Middle Eastern immigrants in America, and what are the impacts and challenges specifically related to Middle Eastern immigrants in Arkansas. Refreshments will be provided.听 Monday events will continue with a discussion on 鈥淟iving, Working, Interning, and Studying Abroad in Asia鈥� from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center Leadership Lounge. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students and staff talk about their experiences working and studying in Asia.听 Monday will conclude with a free movie night at 6 p.m. in Student Services Center Room 104. 鈥淭he Band鈥檚 Visit鈥� will be shown as part of the Middle Eastern Studies 2019 Fall Film Series. A band comprised of members of the Egyptian police force head to Israel to play at the inaugural ceremony of an Arab arts center, only to find themselves lost in the wrong town.听 International Celebration Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter Hall. The event will feature interactive displays, posters, music, and food.听 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Intercultural Communication students will present educational posters on communicating across cultures, while various student groups will share their music and dances throughout the day. In addition, the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Office of Study Abroad will provide information about study abroad programs and other international opportunities.听 Representatives from dozens of campus and student organizations representing more than 20 national cultures will distribute information and discuss career and volunteer opportunities throughout the world. Anyone interested in representing their home country can sign up. On Wednesday, Nov. 20, international and American friends will join together for the International Thanksgiving Celebration from 5-7 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center Diamond Cafe.听听 International Celebration Week will conclude Thursday, Nov. 21, with an Interfaith Dialogue Lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center Leadership Lounge. The gallery will feature photos of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students and the many places around the world that they have traveled to through study abroad and exchange programs. A celebration of campus鈥� international population will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Donaghey Student Center鈥檚 Ledbetter Hall. Interactive displays, posters, music, and food cooked by 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 international students will all be featured. For more information about International Celebration Week, visit ualr.edu/studyabroad.]]> /news-archive/2017/11/21/letters-hope-syria/ Tue, 21 Nov 2017 14:18:06 +0000 /news/?p=68613 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock sends Letters of Hope to Syria]]> For sisters Taibah and Maisarah Alnadawi, having the opportunity to write letters of hope to the people of Syria was a small way to give back to the country that used to be their home.听 鈥淚t means a lot that we can help in some way even though we are not there,鈥� said Taibah Alnadawi, a freshman double majoring in political science and international business. 鈥淚 spent most of my childhood in Syria. I still have family living there.鈥� University of Arkansas at Little Rock students, staff, and faculty wrote 鈥淟etters of Hope for Syria鈥� on Monday, Nov. 13, as part of International Celebration Week. The letters will be delivered to Syria by the, a Conway-based nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian aid to the people of Syria and sponsor a school and women鈥檚 center. Monnar Quattom, junior psychology major and president of the Student Muslim Association, was inspired to organize the letter-writing event after hearing Mouaz Moustafa, executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, speak about his humanitarian efforts to help people in Syria during a Sept. 19 visit to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淚 wanted 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to get involved,鈥� Quattom said. 鈥淚 want the people of Syria to know that the U.S. is not abandoning them. We have people everyday who are praying for this war to end.鈥� In her letter, Ashley Pearson, recruitment coordinator with the Office of Admissions, told the Syrian people that they are in her thoughts and prayers and to be hopeful for the future. 鈥淚 enjoy working with international students, and I think this is a great project to show unity and to give hope to the Syrian people,鈥� Pearson said. The Alnadawi sisters left Syria in 2009, but visited Syria in summer 2016. 鈥淓verything is pretty much destroyed, but there are still people living there trying to rebuild everything destroyed by the war,鈥� Taibah Alnadawi said. 鈥淎ll you see are ruined buildings. It basically looks like a desert now.鈥� In her letter to the Syrian people, Taibah Alnadawi encourages them to have patience. 鈥淚鈥檓 telling them that they will be fine as long as we show our support,鈥� she said. 鈥淲e are here for them, and we are sending as much love as we can.鈥� Meanwhile, her sister, Maisarah Alnadawi, junior engineering major, writes wishes of safety and peace for the people of Syria. 鈥淚 told them to stay safe out there and that I hope they have peace soon and that we are always there for them,鈥� she said. The annual dinner is a tradition of International Celebration Week, which runs Nov. 13-16 at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. The week of events strengthens awareness of national cultures and encourages interaction between diverse student organizations and departments on campus. The week鈥檚 activities will include a campaign to write letters of hope for people in war-torn Syria, a panel discussion on DACA (Deferred Action for Child Arrivals) program, interfaith dialog lunches, and a day devoted to celebrating the different cultures represented on the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus. International Celebration Week will kick off with from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13, in Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter A and B. Participants are invited to write letters of hope to let the Syrian people know the world has not forgotten them. Arkansas-based representatives of the Syrian Emergency Task Force will provide information about the crisis in Syria. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
