Adventure-seeking grad loves children, will travel]]> This year has been a year of milestones for Hannah Malmstrom. She married her best friend in May, and on Dec. 15, she graduated from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, earning a Bachelor of Art in applied communication. In between, she and her husband, Clint Travis, spent four months in Europe, exploring nine countries. For a while, they worked on a self-sustaining farm in La Rochelle, France. They鈥檙e already planning for their next backpacking adventure, which will be to Asia. Right now she鈥檚 certain of two things: she loves children and she loves to travel. She hopes to find a career in communications that allows her to be involved in both. A 2013 graduate of Little Rock鈥檚 Joe T. Robinson High School, Malmstrom initially enrolled at a different university to study journalism but transferred to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in January 2016 as a junior.聽After taking a communications class, she was hooked and decided to major in applied communication. 鈥淚鈥檝e really loved my experience here at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was mostly because I liked the department. My professors know my name, they check up on me, and are able to be reached. I felt I was learning concepts and applying those to my personal relationships. To see that pay off immediately… that鈥檚 what education is supposed to be.鈥 She recently completed her capstone research project about premarital counseling. Malmstrom, who has worked as a nanny for several years, says children factor into her future – both personally and professionally. 鈥淚 just love them. I feel like the Lord has given me an outlandish ability to love other people鈥檚 children,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just have a heart for our youth and communicating to them that they are complete humans.鈥 Her dream job, she says, would be helping an organization have more positive communication, whether it be conflict resolution or crisis management. For now, Malmstrom and her husband are parents to Diana, a 7-pound 聽Chihuahua-Yorkie mix adopted from Little Rock Animal Village. The pup goes everywhere with Malmstrom – and even attended some classes where she stayed quietly tucked into a tiny pet carrier.聽When the pup is 1 year old, Malmstrom plans to pursue certification for Diana as a therapy dog. Malmstrom are her husband and currently saving money for their next big adventure. 鈥淲hen our lease it up, we鈥檙e going to tour North America to figure out where we want to live,鈥 Malmstrom, 23, said. 鈥淚 want to always be experiencing things and different points of view and meeting people. If you鈥檙e not, you鈥檙e only seeing one page in the book of the world.鈥 Photo by Benjamin Krain  ]]> 糖心Vlog传媒LR-Pulaski County School District form concurrent enrollment partnership /news-archive/2016/11/04/ualr-pulaski-county-school-district-form-concurrent-enrollment-partnership/ Fri, 04 Nov 2016 22:44:30 +0000 /news/?p=65708 ... 糖心Vlog传媒LR-Pulaski County School District form concurrent enrollment partnership]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the have announced a new concurrent enrollment partnership that will include the four high schools served in the district.聽 On Nov. 4, officials from 糖心Vlog传媒LR and PCSSD met in the Student Services Center at 糖心Vlog传媒LR to sign a memorandum of understanding for the partnership that will include Wilbur D. Mills University Studies High School, Joe T. Robinson High School, Maumelle High School, and Sylvan Hills High School. On hand for the 2:30 p.m. signing were 糖心Vlog传媒LR Chancellor Andrew Rogerson, 糖心Vlog传媒LR Provost Zulma Toro, PCSSD Superintendent Jerry Guess, and PCSSD Assistant Superintendent John Tackett. Under the terms of the MOU, high school students from these schools can enroll in university courses offered by 糖心Vlog传媒LR at their high schools. Participation in the courses will allow them to earn college credit, which may include blended Advanced Placement-concurrent credit. Participating in concurrent enrollment classes can offer high school students an affordable pathway to college, Rogerson said. 鈥淭he cost of higher education is getting prohibitive,鈥 Rogerson said. 鈥淭here is a pathway into this university that is affordable. One of the biggest costs of education nowadays is accommodation. If you can stay at home, it makes sense financially. We can get more students educated locally if we give them a package that makes financial sense.鈥 The goals of the partnership include:
  • Reducing the costs of higher education to students and families.
  • Facilitating degree completion.
  • Promoting early completion of degrees.
  • Introducing high school students to university life in a familiar educational environment.
  • Providing comprehensive academic advising to students seeking the college credit.
  • Encouraging students to continue college beyond concurrent enrollment.
Mary Elizabeth Woolery, the 糖心Vlog传媒LR concurrent enrollment coordinator, will be the university鈥檚 point of contact and oversee all aspects of the partnership, including application, admission, registration, completion, and transfer credit processes at an annual orientation meeting. Courses offered for concurrent credit under this agreement will be taught on the participating high school campuses, unless other mutually acceptable arrangements are made. Concurrent enrollment provides high school students the opportunity to take college-credit bearing courses taught by college-approved high school teachers. It is a low-cost scalable model for bringing accelerated courses to students in urban, suburban, and rural high schools. Students gain exposure to the academic challenges of college while in their supportive high school environment and earn college credit as they successfully pass the course. Concurrent enrollment also facilitates close collaboration between high school teachers and college faculty that fosters alignment of secondary and postsecondary curriculum. Sometimes called 鈥渄ual credit,鈥 鈥渄ual enrollment,鈥 or 鈥渃ollege in the high school,鈥 concurrent enrollment partnerships differ from other models of dual enrollment because high school instructors teach the college courses.
