Faculty Excellence Award for Public Service

Hendon is a 24-year veteran of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and serves as a senior instructor in the Department of Management and Human Resources. He served as a board member for the Small Business Institute from 2012 to 2017. He also served in a number of executive positions over the years, including vice president of programs, president-elect, and president. He continues to serve as a mentor and fellow. He also holds the title of Small Business Institute Fellow, which is the highest honor the organization bestows on its members. This honor goes to those who have significant and noteworthy accomplishments in teaching, research, and service involving small businesses. One of his major accomplishments is creating a link between traditional large organization human resources research and small business/entrepreneurial research. Hendon also serves as a member of the Central High School Technology Committee. His service to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock includes being on the Institutional Effectiveness Committee and several terms on the Faculty Senate. 鈥淒uring his time here, he has routinely gone above and beyond in his efforts to serve, amplify, and promote our university,鈥 said Joseph Bell, professor of entrepreneurship. 鈥淗e is quick to assist others in the college while at the same time shuns personal credit. His significant corporate knowledge of the university and willingness to share that information with others makes our job easier. His extensive volunteerism is a significant illustration of John鈥檚 devotion to our institution, while also demonstrating his competency and tenacity.鈥

Nduku also serves as the RN-BSN online program coordinator. She earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree and master鈥檚 degree in nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice, all from the University of Central Arkansas. Since taking on a leadership role in the School Nursing, Nduku has also become a mentor to new faculty members and is instrumental to the program through curriculum revisions, policy updates, recruitment, and research endeavors. 鈥淭he School of Nursing is fortunate to have Dr. Nduku as a leader on our team that educates over 800 nursing students every year,鈥 said Dr. Sloan Davidson, director of the School of Nursing. 鈥淪he embodies the description for the Excellence in Teaching Award and is an outstanding representative of everything our school stands for, particularly our vision of inspiring excellence, transforming care, and creating leaders.鈥

McElwee has an impressive research agenda that has resulted in 20 peer-reviewed publications, four manuscripts under review, and four book reviews.

鈥淭racey has maintained a commitment to students and service, all while maintaining a stellar publication record that rivals those at R1 institutions,鈥 said Dr. Laura Danforth, assistant professor of social work. 鈥淒r. McElwee is a scholar and master researcher, and is always pursuing her goal of adding to the literature in the field of social work. She has demonstrated a passion and commitment to her research agenda, loves challenges, and is one of the most perceptive and prolific researchers in our department and field.鈥 Her research agenda includes being a part of a team of researchers, led by Dr. Taren Swindle, who received a $3.1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to complete a seven-year project to address early habits in early childcare and education settings with the goal of reducing cancer. The project will reach 5,000 children and 500 teachers across Arkansas and Louisiana. McElwee is also studying the results of a research study conducted with a $10,000 grant from the Council on Social Work Education鈥檚 Policy Practice in Field Initiative through the New York Community Trust. Approximately 125 students participated in this high-impact learning experience embedded in social work and political science courses at Philander Smith College and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. In 2017, McElwee and her students assessed the state of campus food insecurity at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock after the creation of the Trojan Food Pantry. This project led to her next research endeavor involving a partnership with the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance and exploration regarding how reduction in SNAP funding would affect SNAP recipients. McElwee and students in her policy course called grocery stores, food pantries, farmers markets, and SNAP recipients across all 75 Arkansas counties. Prince, Hendon, and Gilliam receive Faculty Excellence Awards from CBHSS]]> The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock College of Business, Health, and Human Services (CBHSS) has selected Drs. Bennie Prince, John Hendon, and David Gilliam as its 2021 Faculty Excellence Winners.听 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock annually celebrates the achievements of the top professors of the year who are making a difference in the community through their contributions in teaching, research and creative works, and public service. This is the highest honor 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock awards its faculty members. Created in 1989, the Faculty Excellence Awards have provided a way to recognize the great work of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty for the past 32 years and is made possible through contributions by the Office of the Chancellor, the Office of the Provost, the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Chancellor鈥檚 Circle, the Bailey Foundation, and UMR.听 Prince, Hendon, and Gilliam will compete for the university-wide Faculty Excellence Awards, which will be announced April 15. Having taught at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for 33 years, Prince advises around 250 students in two undergraduate and three minor programs as the health human performance undergraduate coordinator. 鈥淪he is a dedicated program coordinator and faculty member that always shows great initiative and diligence in developing her skills in teaching and helping others develop their skills in teaching,鈥 said Rusty Wright, advanced instructor in the School of Counseling, Human Performance, and Rehabilitation. 鈥淪he has a genuine interest in her personal work, working with faculty, and our students.鈥 In 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Academy for Teaching and Learning Excellence, Prince served as the first Enhanced Teaching and Learning Faculty Fellow. She helped faculty members develop and expand internship programs at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. This led to the establishment of a grant program to support faculty developing internship programs in their departments. 鈥淗er work supporting faculty development of internship programs has been very successful,鈥 said Dr. Michael DeAngelis, associate professor of geology and ATLE co-director. 鈥淒r. Rene Shroat-Lewis, the internship coordinator in my department and a grant awardee, was able to use these grant funds to bring together many local stakeholders for a meeting about the internship program. This meeting resulted in several new and continuing internship opportunities for our students.鈥 Prince works with faculty members to investigate best practices of blended learning to support the best of face-to-face and online learning. 鈥淒r. Prince鈥檚 online teaching, course design, and role as a community health advocate are known throughout Arkansas and the country,鈥 said Dr. Jennifer Holtz, director of the School of Counseling, Human Performance, and Rehabilitation. 鈥淪he has been active as a community, state, and national presenter of research in physical and education teaching.鈥 Faculty Excellence Award in Public Service 鈥 John Hendon, senior instructor of management A seven-time entrepreneur and former operations director for a $60-million company, Hendon has been teaching at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock since 1997.

In the local HR community, Hendon volunteers as a resume reviewer during job fairs held by the Central Arkansas Human Resource Association and often serves as a guest speaker with the Human Resource Management Association and the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Human Resource Society. In the Society for Human Resource Management, Hendon works with a team of members who actively work with legislators to provide information on how proposed laws and regulations affect organizations鈥 ability to operate. The most recent conversation in June 2020 dealt with how a proposed change to the Optional Practical Training by the Trump administration would affect international students completing college degrees. Hendon has been a member of the Small Business Institute (SBI) since 2006 and has served as vice president of programs, president-elect, and president. He mentors new members and officers and holds the title of Small Business Institute Fellow. This is the highest honor that SBI awards its members. It is granted to those who have significant and noteworthy accomplishments in teaching, research, and service involving small business. 鈥淥ne of John鈥檚 major accomplishments is that he has created a link between traditional large organization HR research and small business/entrepreneurial research,鈥 said Joe Felan, associate professor of management. At 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Hendon served until recently on the Institutional Effectiveness Committee and the planning and finance and budget committees for Faculty Senate. 鈥淎s the chair of IEC, I was gratified to be able to count on Mr. Hendon鈥檚 deep business background and insights into effectiveness and budget at the unit and university levels, and his knowledge and perspectives were well-regarded by other committee members,鈥 said Dr. Erin Finzer, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. 鈥淢r. Gilliam鈥檚 research focuses on creating proper definitions for constructs in marketing and the exploration of managerially actionable aspects of sales and services. Many of Gilliam鈥檚 published articles have focused on narratives and storytelling in marketing.听听听 The exploration of managerially actionable aspects of sales and services animates many of my articles,鈥 Gilliam said. 鈥淭he research focuses on issues in personality, social norms, work design, servicescape design, branding, services and healthcare. The resulting publications illuminate levers that managers can use to improve cooperation among coworkers, frontline employee motivation, booth effectiveness at trade shows, brand narratives, advertisements, customer experience, retail sales, and adherence to healthcare advice.鈥 Gilliam is the recipient of several awards for his research and contribution to the field of marketing. The trade journal, 鈥淚ndustrial Marketing Management,鈥 which focuses on research for scholars and practitioners of marketing recognized him as an outstanding reviewer.
