This was the highest amount raised by any chapter in the Arkansas district. It truly goes to show that our Brotherhood is not for a day, nor an hour, nor a college term only, but for life.鈥 Nationally, Kappa Sigma raised a record $375,000 from more than 11,000 donations,聽up from last year鈥檚 $312,000. Kappa Sigma awards scholarships to three outstanding 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock freshmen]]> Kappa Sigma chapter awarded three scholarships to outstanding freshmen who exhibited exceptional leadership abilities in high school through community involvement, participation in student organizations, and service.聽 The winners of the 鈥淭ake the Lead Scholarship鈥 include Emma Guerra, a community management and development major and Spanish minor; Isaac Thomas, a double major in political science and international studies; and Landon DeKay, a political science major and legal studies minor. Chris Stephens, head of the Kappa Sigma scholarship committee, said that after being involved in leadership roles in Kappa Sigma and several other organizations on campus, he created the “Take the Lead Scholarship” to encourage freshmen to take on more leadership responsibilities. 鈥淲e need students who will step up and take on leadership roles on campus and in the community,鈥 Stephens said. 鈥淭his scholarship is a way to recognize new freshmen who had leadership roles in high school. Our three winners stood way out of the crowd.鈥 Dr. Terry Richard, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock professor emeritus of sociology and Kappa Sigma alumnus from Southwestern University, and Joe Swafford, libertarian nominee for Arkansas鈥檚 2nd Congressional District and Kappa Sigma alumnus from Arkansas Tech University, presented the $200 scholarships to the winners. The money for the scholarships was donated from the Richard Family Scholarship. 鈥淢y son was a member of Kappa Sigma, so this honors him,鈥 Richard said. 鈥淚 think it is an excellent idea to promote the largest, most diverse fraternity in the country.鈥 In her hometown of Dallas, Guerra, a graduate of Imagine International Academy of North Texas, was a varsity lacrosse player, president of the Broadcast Team, vice president of the National Honor Society, assistant editor-in-chief of the Rising Dragon Newspaper, as well as a member of the Debate Club, McKinney Youth Leadership program, and Congressional Youth Advisory Council. 鈥淚 am really happy,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was an opportunity for a little extra help to pay for college. I didn鈥檛 expect a fraternity to pick a girl, but I was happy to receive the email telling me I won.鈥 Guerra plans to complete her bachelor鈥檚 degree in three years, then serve in the Peace Corps for two years before returning to Arkansas to attend law school with plans to work as a civil rights attorney. 鈥淚 want to be an advocate for the voiceless, repressed, neglected, and abused,鈥 Guerra said. 鈥淲hether that be my advocacy coming through my practice of law for those who don鈥檛 have the ability, knowledge or means to stand up for themselves or by working for an organization that counsels those after a disaster.鈥 Thomas, a graduate of Ashdown High School, served as vice president and president of his class and Arkansas State vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America. He was also a member of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, Purple Pride Marching Band, Debate Team, and EAST Initiative. He served as a staff sergeant for the Civil Air Patrol. 鈥淚 was with the Air Force Civil Patrol in high school, so I pledged to join the Air Force after I get a diploma in my hand,鈥 Thomas said. 鈥淭hen I want to enter political life and become a politician and diplomat. I fully intend to join the Foreign Service Office and represent the United States of America abroad as I work with a team of specialists to promote peace, support prosperity, as I faithfully serve and protect the citizens from foreign threats.鈥 DeKay, a graduate of Maumelle High School, was actively involved in Student Council, National Honors Society, Student Council, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. As a member of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, he was recognized for community projects that included teaching senior citizens in Maumelle how to use Microsoft Office, email, and social media programs and teaching middle and elementary school students about severe weather preparation. 鈥淚 plan to major in both political science and legal studies in order to become a prosecuting attorney,鈥 Dekay said. 鈥淎fter I work in the legal field for several years, I want to run for a Senate or House of Representatives seat at the national level. I want to make a positive lasting difference on society, and this is the perfect way to do just that.鈥 In the upper right photo, the “Take the Lead Scholarship” recipients are honored at a ceremony at Kappa Sigma. Haire looking forward to bright future as travel nurse]]> For sophomore Tanner Haire, a city the size of Little Rock was the perfect place to attend college. He has family in Arkadelphia, but prefers the vibe of a larger city since he grew up in San Antonio. Haire enrolled at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in August 2017 and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is on track to graduate in 2021. He comes from a family of college-educated professionals. His father, Darrell Morrison, is an associate vice chancellor for finance at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, and his mother, Kelli Morrison, works at the University of Texas San Antonio. His older siblings both work in healthcare. His sister is a nurse, and his brother is a physician鈥檚 assistant in the U.S. Army. 鈥淪eeing what they do interested me,鈥 Haire said. 鈥淚鈥檝e always wanted to be a travel nurse and go around the country. If I don鈥檛 end up doing that, I鈥檇 like to work in an emergency room.鈥 As a freshman, Haire took mainly core classes. He took chemistry this summer, so that he can start taking nursing classes this fall. One of his favorite classes was Anatomy and Physiology with Dr. Jeremy Chamberlain. 鈥淗e made it interesting, and he鈥檚 super energetic,鈥 Haire said. While college can be a huge adjustment, Haire found campus life relaxing and the academic workload manageable. 鈥淭he biggest part was coming from high school and having someone remind you every day to not having someone telling you what to do,鈥 he said. Although he lives off-campus, he stays connected with with campus organizations. He鈥檚 a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity, works in Student Affairs at the help desk, and serves on the Student Alumni Board, which assists the Alumni Association with fundraisers such as Burgers at Bailey and Taste of Little Rock. 鈥淚鈥檝e been able to meet people from all over the campus,鈥 he said.]]> Kappa Sigma president ranked top 5 in fundraising across the nation /news-archive/2018/03/21/kappa-sigma-president-ranked-top-5-fundraising-across-nation/ Wed, 21 Mar 2018 14:29:22 +0000 /news/?p=69856 ... Kappa Sigma president ranked top 5 in fundraising across the nation]]> Christopher Stephens, president of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Kappa Sigma fraternity, was named by the national fraternity as the fifth highest fundraising undergraduate in the nation for his contribution during the 2018 Weekend of Giving. For the past three years, Kappa Sigma fraternities across the nation have participated in a three-day fundraiser, in which all undergraduate chapter members seek donations for their individual chapter鈥檚 scholarship-leadership awards. These funds benefit undergraduate members who demonstrate excellence in academics, campus involvement, and fraternity leadership. The fundraising goal set by the national fraternity for the Theta Eta chapter at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was $1,500, which was exceeded as the chapter raked in $2,383, more than any other Arkansas chapter in the state. Each member of Theta Eta donated to the cause, making them one of very few chapters to reach one hundred percent participation. As an ambassador, Stephens was able to raise $1,523 of his chapter鈥檚 donations, earning him a spot among the top five highest fundraising undergraduate ambassadors of the year. The largest amount raised by an ambassador this year was $5,426. Each ambassador, or chapter president, was given a custom link to send out to potential donors, and any money collected through the link was counted toward his raising. 鈥淚 emailed many of our alumni to ask them to consider donating the $3.40 minimum,鈥 Stephens said. 鈥淢ost of them far exceeded this, typically donating $34. I also sent the link out to many alumni that I have added on Facebook. I explained where the money was going and why even the smallest donation would add up if everyone made one.鈥 As a result of his contributions, Stephens, as well as the other top ambassadors, will receive a paid registration and hotel stay in New Orleans for the Kappa Sigma National Leadership Conference July 20-22. This year alone, the Kappa Sigma fraternity saw its most successful fundraising year. The Theta Eta chapter doubled its existing pool of scholarship money, and the national organization raised $312,765. “The fact that any single chapter of Kappa Sigma, much less one our size, can raise this amount of money in three days demonstrates that I truly belong to the greatest fraternity on Earth,鈥 Stephens exclaimed. 鈥淚 am excited to be a part of something that can so positively impact the lives of these guys, and I look forward to absolutely shattering this record next year.”  ]]>
