Smith Named Associate Vice Chancellor of Alumni and Development at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> “When I graduated from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, I accumulated no student debt, largely due to scholarships I received while I was student,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淓ver since, I have wanted to give back to my alma mater. I am grateful to serve in such a rewarding role for the students of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.” Smith has been named the associate vice chancellor of alumni and development at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. Her new role includes management of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Association, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, and planned giving. 鈥淢uch of the success our team enjoys is because of Kristi Smith鈥檚 good work,鈥 said Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for university advancement. 鈥淜risti is a most respected colleague and has the proven ability to motivate others to do what they can to help our university be its best. I鈥檓 thrilled Kristi has agreed to this expanded role, and I know we can expect more growth in fundraising to come from her leadership.鈥 A graduate of the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program, Smith earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in international studies and a Master of Public Administration degree from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. She previously worked at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock as the assistant to the dean of the Graduate School from 1998 to 2002, where she oversaw the TEAMS (Teaching Enhancements Affecting Minority Students) program. Since rejoining 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in the Office of Alumni and Development in 2016, Smith has taken the lead on several key philanthropic initiatives, including the Chancellor鈥檚 Circle and the Foundation Fund Board of Directors. She was promoted to senior director of alumni and development in 2019. Smith Serves as Commencement Speaker for Leadership Greater Little Rock Class XXXVI]]> Established in 1985 by the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Greater Little Rock seeks to develop community leaders by training and informing participants on a wide array of local public policy issues and concerns. In-depth training sessions focus on these issues, exploring their background, origin, and present-day status. The program covers a full slate of topics, including government, the area鈥檚 economy, education, social service, and much more. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderfully immersive program that presented us with challenges, successes, threats, and opportunities for growth,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淎s a lifelong Arkansas resident, going to school at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, and living and working here ever since, it鈥檚 fair to say that I have spent the majority of my life here and thought that I knew all there was to know. Thanks to Leadership Greater Little Rock, I now know so much more about Little Rock and about myself.鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock would also like to congratulate our alumni who also graduated from Leadership Greater Little Rock Class XXXVI. They include Sean Bass, Alecia Castleberry, Meagan Davis (Bowen), Adam Effrein, David Jung (Bowen), Summer Khairi, Maradyth McKenzie, Jennifer Ruhlman, and Matthew Runge (Bowen). The 34 members of Leadership Greater Little Rock Class XXXVI celebrated their graduation during a May 6 ceremony at the DoubleTree Hotel in Little Rock. As the class speaker, Smith spoke about all the things she learned from participating in the program and received a standing ovation for her efforts. 鈥淚 now know that we鈥檙e better for going into and learning about different neighborhoods,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淕iving back to those with the biggest need is the biggest reward. Unassuming areas like the river port and airport offices are major players along with the Chamber of Commerce for bringing in big business. Hard decisions are made every day to keep this city safe.鈥 After completing a two-day retreat in October, LGLR participants met every month at a different central Arkansas location to explore topics through expert speakers, panelists, tours, and group presentations. LGLR is designed to develop effective leaders by enhancing their civic, social, and professional awareness to positively impact our community. This included trips to the Little Rock Port Authority, Our House, the Pulaski County Jail, and more. Smith recalls her favorite meeting as the military session in which participants got to ride in a Blackhawk C130 from Little Rock Air Force Base to Camp Robinson and listen to members of the military talk about their missions in life. 鈥淭hat was a pretty exciting day,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淩iding from one base to another aboard a C130 was icing on the cake. I don鈥檛 think I stopped grinning the entire time I was in the air. Listening to soldiers refer to what they do as 鈥榤issions,鈥 I wondered how different our city would be if we took the care that they seem to have in every aspect of their work. I like to think that what I do at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in terms of fundraising and reaching alumni is very much true to the mission of the university.鈥 Smith also thanked Chancellor Christina Drale and Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for university advancement, for supporting her nomination and participation in Leadership Greater Little Rock Class XXXVI. 鈥淚 should say I鈥檓 thankful to the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock administration for selecting me to participate and to understand the importance of having someone from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock participate,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e are a vital part of the city, and it鈥檚 important for us to be a part of the conversation.鈥漖]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to Honor Alum Dr. Sara Tariq at 2022 Taste of Little Rock /news-archive/2022/02/16/2022-taste-of-little-rock/ Wed, 16 Feb 2022 14:23:05 +0000 /news/?p=81029 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to Honor Alum Dr. Sara Tariq at 2022 Taste of Little Rock]]> Taste of Little Rock, will return March 29. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock will honor alumna Dr. Sara Tariq, associate dean for student affairs in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (糖心Vlog传媒MS), as the 2022 Taste of Little Rock honoree. 鈥淚 am deeply honored to be a part of Taste of Little Rock,鈥 Tariq said. 鈥淎s a child of immigrant parents from India, I have a first-hand understanding of the economic and social challenges that some students face. Getting a scholarship to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock allowed me to focus solely on my studies. The faculty at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock provided me with the mentorship and knowledge to take the next steps in my career, which included getting admitted to medical school at 糖心Vlog传媒MS.鈥 The event is set for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the Jack Stephens Center. Taste of Little Rock raises funds to help students through the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Association Scholarship Fund while introducing guests to some of the best food in the city from the finest restaurants in Little Rock. During the past 16 years, Taste of Little Rock has raised more than $682,000 for student scholarships. 鈥淲e are excited to honor Dr. Tariq for her passion to impact the lives of Arkansans through education,鈥 said Kristi Smith, senior director of development. 鈥淒uring her time as a student, she was enrolled in the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program, which presented her with foundational tools of research and writing that she has used for the betterment of society. She is an outstanding example of the best and brightest from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock who have graduated and enjoyed success in their chosen fields. 鈥 Tariq, who is well-known among 糖心Vlog传媒MS medical students as a compassionate educator and mentor, is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and an exceptional physician who teaches by example. She is a 1993 graduate of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock who holds聽 a bachelor鈥檚 degree in biology. In 2018, Tariq was named Outstanding Alumni of the Year for the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. This year, Hendrix College will award her the Ethel K. Tariq received her medical degree from 糖心Vlog传媒MS in 1998 and completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She joined the 糖心Vlog传媒MS faculty in 2002 after serving as chief resident at Brown University. She is a professor of internal medicine and serves as medical director of the Center for Clinical Skills Education. A firm believer in giving back to the community, Tariq鈥檚 philanthropic efforts in the Little Rock community are immense. She has served as president of the board of the Harmony Health Clinic, which serves the uninsured and underserved population in Pulaski County, for the past decade, and has co-chaired the annual Bollywood Nights gala for many years. 鈥淚 strongly believe in lifting others up so we can all be successful in this state,鈥 Tariq said. 鈥淒elivering primary care to the uninsured people of Little Rock at Harmony Clinic, promoting social justice by serving on the board of Just Communities of Arkansas, and serving on Mayor Frank Scott鈥檚 transition team have helped me continue to serve the people of this state, but also helped me grow as an individual. I want future 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock graduates to have the same opportunities for growth and leadership as I have had. I am ecstatic to support 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students by raising money for scholarships.鈥 In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tariq started a community mask campaign with two 糖心Vlog传媒MS physicians to financially support women who have lost their jobs during the pandemic. The women are given sewing machines to help stitch face masks and donate masks to those in need. So far, the campaign has raised more than $16,000 and distributed more than 4,000 face masks. 鈥淲hen the pandemic hit, so many people felt helpless,鈥 Tariq said. 鈥淲hile small at first, now we are not only helping Muslims and immigrant communities, but we are also providing face masks to several faith communities, nursing homes, and churches whose congregations primarily consist of colored, marginalized, or low-income communities in central Arkansas.鈥 Stephanie Caruthers, a managing partner at Trio鈥檚 restaurant and co-chair of Taste of Little Rock, emphasized the importance of raising scholarship funds for college students. Loris Fullerton, a member of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Board of Directors, is also serving as co-chair of Taste of Little Rock. 鈥淭he Alumni Association scholarships are an important part of our support and advocacy for the university and, as an Alumni Association Board member, I am able to experience first-hand the impact of Taste of Little Rock scholarships,鈥 Caruthers said. 鈥淚 have had the privilege of interviewing scholarship applicants, and that process has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my board service. Women to Watch at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock: Kristi Smith]]> In celebration of Women鈥檚 History Month, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is profiling women in leadership positions who are making a difference at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and in the community. The next Woman to Watch at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock of 2021 is Kristi Smith, senior director of alumni and development.聽 Tell us about yourself? I鈥檓 the youngest of four. I grew up in Marche, Arkansas. I went to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock as a Donaghey Scholar and graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in international studies and a Master of Public Administration. I am married to Greg, and we have two miniature schnauzers, Dottie and DiDi.聽 This is actually my second time to work at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. In my first position, I served as Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. I traveled to other schools in the state to recruit for our graduate programs. I also oversaw the TEAMS (Teaching Enhancements Affecting Minority Students) program, which provided extracurricular activities to both undergraduates and graduates. I am still in touch with several of the students who participated in the program to this day. What was your experience like as an undergraduate student at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock? I had a great experience. I was a part of the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program, and I often tell the story of the international study abroad component. I went to Strasbourg, France, the summer between my freshman and sophomore year. That was my first time on a plane. I studied French and French history. It was a six-week trip, and I learned a lot about myself and my place in the world. I have 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to thank for that.聽 I also pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1993 when I was a junior. I made the most of my experience. I was a traditional college student, and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was my first choice for several reasons. I had several opportunities to come on campus when I was a junior and senior in high school. I was part of the Academy Orchestra, and we practiced in the Fine Arts Building. I was already familiar with the campus since my sister was a student here.聽 With being a Donaghey Scholar, I knew that I would have help with my tuition. If not, I would have had to incur student loans. I have friends that I made in the Donaghey Scholars Program, in the sorority, and elsewhere across campus that I still have today. What does your job entail as senior director of alumni and development at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock? I am responsible for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock alumni, annual giving, and planned giving. I have the opportunity to reach people at all ages, whether alumni or friends, and I get to connect with them at whatever stage they are in life. I am also the director of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Alumni Association. I get to interact with alumni, and one of my goals is to come up with programming that will interest all our alumni. We have alumni who are 22 and just graduated, and we have alumni who are 92 and older. There is always a challenge to figure out how to connect with our alumni at all ages. What other charitable and professional organizations are you involved in?

I鈥檓 a part of CASE (Council for Support and Advancement of Education). I鈥檓 also a member of Beta Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, a social organization that does a variety of community service activities including the American Heart Association and Alzheimer鈥檚 Association. I鈥檓 also a board member of the Little Rock Diamond Foundation, the charitable arm of the Little Rock Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.聽 What鈥檚 next in your professional career? Professionally, I want to accurately and passionately share the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock story with others. I think it鈥檚 a hidden gem, and we have so many amazing students, faculty, staff, and alumni. In our city, there are so many opportunities for people to learn. I want to tell our story in an effort to raise money and raise awareness of the needs of our students. What woman has inspired you the most and why? I would say my mother, even though she is no longer with us. It was years ago that she worked at the Baldwin Piano factory and later as a housekeeper for several families. When I was in 9th grade, she decided to go back to school. She did very well on the ACT and came to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for classes. To me, it was amazing that she undertook that journey. I know it was very intimidating for her, but she excelled. I believe that she wanted to prove to herself that she could go to college while being a mother and continuing to work.聽 In her later years as she became ill, she was still graceful in her sickness and was a wonderful example for others to follow.聽 What advice would you give to the next generation of women in higher education?

My advice is to find a mentor who understands what it means to uplift. At the same time, you should reciprocate. Always share with people what your goals are. Otherwise, they won鈥檛 know what you are working toward. Unless people know what you鈥檙e striving for, they can鈥檛 help you. Don鈥檛 be afraid to ask for help; if there is someone in a position where you think you want to be, reach out to them and ask to shadow them. Also, never underestimate the value of a handwritten thank you note. How have you adapted to life during COVID-19? I am back in the office, but I enjoyed working from home during the first months of the pandemic. I have grown to appreciate nature a lot more. I spent my time going for walks in my neighborhood, and I am happy for spring because I am looking forward to that 鈥渕e鈥 time when it鈥檚 just me and an audiobook. I personally know a few people who died from the coronavirus, andI have more of an appreciation for being thankful for what I have and continue to have during this time.聽 What is a little-known fact about yourself that people who know you would be surprised to learn? I can deadlift 285 pounds.]]>

The new scholarship can be used for any education-related expenses, including tuition, books, fees, and room and board. 鈥淲hen I received a message from Cedric about establishing a scholarship, I could tell how passionate he and Arleshia were about helping 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students who have been impacted by domestic or gun violence,鈥 said Kristi Smith, senior director of development. 鈥淓ach incident of those who were killed as a result of racial injustice was a call to action for them to make a difference at their alma mater for students in need.鈥 The generous donation is something that will make a difference for students and show alumni how they can help their alma mater. 鈥淭his is truly an altruistic action that will positively impact the lives of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students,鈥 said Dr. Richard Harper, dean of students. 鈥淲e have some phenomenal students and alumni of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock.
