LeFevre is first recipient of Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Scholarship]]> 鈥淚 am super excited about receiving this scholarship,鈥 LeFevre said. 鈥淚 was very honored to be able to meet the donor, Leslye Shellam. I鈥榲e received scholarships through the department before and I wrote a thank you letter. I鈥檝e never had the opportunity to meet the donor, and that was very lovely.鈥 Leslye Shellam, the daughter of Linda Blaine Flake and L. Dickson Flake, created the scholarship to honor her mother鈥檚 love of art with a $100,000 donation. Shellam awarded LaFevre the scholarship during a celebration of World Art Day on April 15, while LaFevre gifted Shellam with a charcoal painting of his girlfriend and dog. As part of the scholarship, LeFevre will feature his work in a solo exhibit in the Windgate Center of Art and Design during the spring 2022 semester. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderful opportunity,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 have made so much work since I鈥檝e been at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, especially after not making art for so long. I am so excited to put all my work in the solo show. It鈥檚 an opportunity to show all the things I鈥檝e been working on rather than just one area of interest.鈥 After graduating from Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School in 2003, LeFevre moved to Memphis and later North Carolina. He鈥檚 been working as a dog groomer for the past six years and hadn鈥檛 practiced art in more than a decade when he started at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock as a biology major with the intention of practicing medical bio illustration. 鈥淭hen I took one basic drawing class in the Windgate Center, and I was blown away,鈥 LeFevre said. 鈥淚 started drawing again for the first time in 15 years. I realized I didn鈥檛 need a biology degree. I needed to be making art. The building and faculty was so amazing that I was really blown away.鈥 LeFevre also works in the Windgate Center as the woodshop monitor and teaching assistant. He鈥檒l be putting those skills to work during the fall semester working as a studio assistant for woodshop classes at Penland School of Craft, an international center for craft education in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. LaFeve recently had four pieces displayed in the Annual Student Competitive art show, and he was one of the winners of the Art Supplies and Materials award, courtesy of Art Outfitters. He was a recipient of the 2020-21 Signature Experience Award, which he and his partner, Andrew Myers, used to create . 鈥淢y project was a furniture design project,鈥 LeFevre said. 鈥淎nother furniture design student and myself designed benches for the art department made from wood harvested from a tree from the campus lot. After we send them to a company to be painted, the benches will end up in the Windgate Center of Art and Design.鈥 LeFevre will graduate in spring 2022 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in studio art, a minor in art history, and an applied design certificate. After graduation, his next step is to attend graduate school.]]> Shellam makes $100,000 donation to create endowed scholarship for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock art students in mother鈥檚 name /news-archive/2021/04/15/shellam-makes-donation/ Thu, 15 Apr 2021 21:23:13 +0000 /news/?p=78686 ... Shellam makes $100,000 donation to create endowed scholarship for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock art students in mother鈥檚 name]]> A Little Rock woman has made a $100,000 donation to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to create an endowed scholarship in her mother鈥檚 name for senior art students. Leslye Shellam, the daughter of Linda Blaine Flake and L. Dickson Flake, created the scholarship to honor her mother鈥檚 love of art.聽聽 鈥淭hough recognized as 鈥榞ifted鈥 from an early age, Linda knew that knowledge and experimentation to new, unfamiliar ideas kept her work fresh and inspired,鈥 Shellam said. 鈥淭he endowment in her name is intended to allow an art student more time for curiosity and self-exploration to channel their talent into a lifelong contribution to the rest of us who may need to be reminded of the 鈥榰ndefined鈥 that encourages personal creativity of all forms in each of us.鈥 The Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Art Scholarship will benefit senior undergraduate students studying the visual arts in the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淢rs. Flake was a longtime practicing painter and considered painting a vocation and an avocation,鈥 said Joseph Lampo, director of development and external relations. 鈥淏oth she and her husband Dickson Flake had been active members of the Little Rock community for many years. I can鈥檛 think of a better way for a community member to honor someone than to provide support for students at the local metropolitan university studying a subject important to that person. We are grateful to Leslye Shellam for her appreciation of the need for this support.鈥 Linda Blaine Flake was a native of Little Rock who attended Central High School through the 11th grade. Her father, Fletcher Clement Jr., was a civil engineer whose work took him and his family to places all around the world, including Canada, Morocco, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Colorado. She graduated high school in North Africa and later attended school in Gstaad and Neuchatel, Switzerland. She developed a love of the arts at a young age. Drawing and painting helped Flake navigate her early school years when the family moved frequently because of her father鈥檚 job. She had a summer job in Africa as a draftsman with the Corps of Engineers and another in the mapping section of the Arkansas Highway Department. After she married Dickson Flake, the couple moved to Detroit where their daughter, Leslye, was born. After the Flakes returned to Little Rock to be near family and friends, she studied and developed her art skills while her husband established a successful commercial real estate business.

Flake continued her passion for creating art by studying at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. She also participated in a painting master class invitational in Maine, and attended workshops in China, Guatemala, Mexico, Bali, California, and New Mexico. She was a successful artist who showed her work at the former Art on the Green Gallery in Conway, Arkansas, as well as the well-remembered Heights Gallery in Little Rock. She was an active member and former president of the Mid-Southern Watercolorists and also worked in other mediums. She and Townsend Wolfe, past long-serving director of the former Arkansas Arts Center, now the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, had an exclusive extended two-person exhibition of their work inspired by their visits to Asia, when China was still not fully open to the Western world. 鈥淢y mother, Linda Blaine Flake, was an exceptionally intelligent and insightful woman,鈥 Shellam said. 鈥淎rt was the vehicle that kept her challenged and questioning established guidelines in life as well as her career. Linda鈥檚 artwork was not produced by what might interest a prospective buyer, but was an outpouring of what she wanted to share of her soul with others. By not defining herself in a specific category, she聽 stayed open and embraced many mediums which facilitated rewarding life experiences, spurring even more creative and personal achievements.鈥 The scholarship, to be awarded to a rising senior, will provide assistance for any education related expenses, including tuition, books, fees, and room and board. At the end of their senior year, the scholarship recipient will also have the opportunity for聽 a solo exhibition of their work in one of the art galleries at the Windgate Center of Art and Design. 鈥淲e鈥檙e delighted and gratified by the gift of the Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Scholarship,鈥 said Thomas Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭his unique scholarship, which provides annual funding for a solo student exhibition, will give us the opportunity to highlight the talents of an outstanding graduating senior each year.鈥澛 In the upper right photo, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock studio art major Caleb LeFevre, left, was awarded the first Linda Blaine Flake Endowed Art Scholarship by philanthropist Leslye Shellam during a celebration of World Art Day at the Windgate Center of Art and Design. Colliers Arkansas $25,000 Donation Points to Industry Support of Real Estate Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock /news-archive/2021/03/01/colliers-arkansas-donation/ Mon, 01 Mar 2021 17:50:56 +0000 /news/?p=78448 ... Colliers Arkansas $25,000 Donation Points to Industry Support of Real Estate Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> Colliers Arkansas has made a $25,000 donation for a University of Arkansas at Little Rock scholarship established in honor of Colliers Arkansas Co-Founder L. Dickson Flake. The gift from Colliers Arkansas brings the L. Dickson Flake Endowed Scholarship to more than $230,000, which allows for more scholarships to be awarded in the fall for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students pursuing an education in finance and real estate.聽 鈥淒ickson Flake was truly a legend in the Arkansas business community. I was fortunate to be hired by him in 1993 as I was finishing graduate school at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 said Kevin Huchingson, CEO and chairman of Colliers Arkansas. 鈥淗e was my mentor and close friend throughout the rest of his life. Dickson established our firm鈥檚 foundation and principles, the core values that have guided our firm for 50 years. He valued education and loved to hire students from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and within the state. Dickson believed that knowledge and integrity were essential to advising our clients. This endowed scholarship will ensure that his teachings and values live on through even more generations of real estate professionals in our state.鈥 Flake鈥檚 daughter Leslye Shellam created the scholarship last year with a donation of $100,000 after family friends said that her father would want his legacy to promote education. 鈥淢y dad was known for education,鈥 Shellam said. 鈥淲henever you ask someone what they remember about dad, besides his interest and devotion and dedication to education, they all had their little nicknames for him. They had something to do with him being the wise one, the perceptive one, and the teacher. This scholarship is carrying on what鈥檚 important to my father. I think this scholarship is going to be around for a lot of years to come and help a lot of people.鈥 Flake, who passed away last year at the age of 81, was well known in the Little Rock real estate community. In 1971, Dickson joined three partners to form Barnes, Quinn, Flake and Anderson, predecessor of the Little Rock 鈥 Bentonville commercial real estate firm of Colliers Arkansas, which is now the largest commercial real estate company in the state. 鈥淲hat a lot of people don鈥檛 know about Dickson is he basically created the commercial real estate industry in Little Rock,鈥 said Isaac Smith, president of Colliers Arkansas. 鈥淧rior to Dickson, nobody was doing what we were doing today. There were appraisers and residential realtors, but he was the first to add a value service to people who were wanting to develop buildings and buy and sell buildings. He was an absolute pioneer in the Little Rock commercial real estate industry.鈥 The endowment is expected to provide almost $10,000 per year for the scholarship. It will be used to provide assistance for education-related expenses, including tuition, books, fees, and room and board, for undergraduate students pursuing a finance degree with an emphasis in real estate in the School of Business. The first recipient of the scholarship is Stephen Malec, a senior finance major with concentrations in real estate as well as financial services and risk management. Shellam presented Malec with the scholarship Feb. 23 at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Downtown. 鈥淎s the first recipient of this generous award, I am excited to see this scholarship award continue for many years to come,鈥 Malec said. 鈥淭his generosity and support for the School of Business and the Real Estate Finance program is admirable and greatly appreciated. My family and I are extremely grateful for this generosity on behalf of the family of Dickson Flake, I am further inspired to achieve my goals and pursue my dreams. I greatly appreciate this tremendous support.鈥 At 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Flake served as a member of the Board of Visitors for 12 years and served as chairman from 1995 to 1996. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock began the real estate program in the 1970s and began revising the program in 2016 with advice from the local real estate community. The rapid endowment of this scholarship shows the importance of real estate in Little Rock. 鈥淒ickson Flake’s legacy runs throughout our entire region and beyond the borders of Arkansas,鈥 said Elizabeth Small, primary instructor for the real estate program. 鈥淗e was always in 鈥榯eaching mode,鈥 and he would be very happy to know students in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Real Estate Program will benefit with this scholarship opportunity. Current and future students will want to know the many accomplishments of such an industry giant and this will not be hard to share. Dickson touched many lives through words of wisdom, and he took the time to show concern for our region’s future. Emulating the value system of such a pragmatist will be a great lesson for all real estate students.鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and Colliers have a continuing effort to grow the L.
