Love of running builds unbreakable bond between twin brothers /news-archive/2018/03/07/love-running-builds-unbreakable-bond-twin-brothers/ Wed, 07 Mar 2018 22:38:53 +0000 /news/?p=69712 ... Love of running builds unbreakable bond between twin brothers]]> For the second year in a row, Karl Lenser, employee wellness coordinator at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, took first place in the men鈥檚 55-59 age group at the Little Rock Half Marathon on March 3.聽 Overall, Lenser finished 27th out of around 3,900 runners with a time of 1 hour, 26 minutes, and 57 seconds. His identical twin brother, Kurt Lenser of Nashville, finished fourth in their age group and 72nd overall with a time of one hour and 34 minutes. The race marks the 39th year the twin brothers have built a bond through a love of running and fitness. 鈥淚 was very pleased to get first in my age group,鈥 Lenser said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun to line up together with my brother and run. For the last 10 years, Kurt has known that I鈥檇 beat him, but it doesn鈥檛 bother him. I want him to do well, and he wants me to do well.鈥 The tradition began with two college students in need of a summer class. In 1979, as soon-to-be juniors at the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse, the brothers signed up for Jogging and Fitness 101. 鈥淚t鈥檚 funny how one class can change your life,鈥 Lenser said. 鈥淲e needed a physical activity credit to become juniors, and that is what started it all. We started doing races that summer and got hooked.鈥 The class inspired both brothers to continue their education, earn a master鈥檚 degree in exercise science, and go into health and wellness careers. While Karl spends his days getting 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock employees in shape and teaching indoor cycling classes at Conway Regional Health and Fitness Center, his brother Kurt works as a personal trainer at Prairie Athletic Club in Franklin, Tennessee. They also visit each other several times a year to compete in races. This marks the fourth year they have competed in the Little Rock Half Marathon together, though Karl has competed every year except for two. 鈥淚t鈥檚 just fun to still be able to compete with each other, visit, and tell war stories from past races,鈥 Karl said. 鈥淲e have the challenge of racing and seeing how well we can do.鈥 He also enjoyed seeing fellow 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock runners identified by new maroon T-shirts. To promote fitness and health among students and employees, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock sponsored 98 Little Rock Marathon runners in the 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon categories. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty cool to see other runners and walkers wearing the Trojan T-shirt,鈥 Karl said. 鈥淚 have seen quite a few students and employees online holding up their finisher鈥檚 medals. It was a great, positive thing for the university to organize and promote Team 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. It created camaraderie and a lot of positive energy on campus.鈥 In the upper right photo, twin brothers聽Kurt (left) and Karl Lenser (right) earned fourth and first place in the men’s 55-59 age group at the Little Rock Half Marathon.聽]]> Anson ready to take on half-marathon, 5K /news-archive/2018/03/02/anson-half-marathon-5k/ Fri, 02 Mar 2018 20:02:49 +0000 /news/?p=69666 ... This past Saturday, he ran 10 miles. Anson is hoping for sunny weather in the 40s (his self-described perfect running weather) this weekend, but acknowledges he is unlikely to get it. 鈥淢y goal for this year鈥檚 race is to finish in the top half. That鈥檚 my goal for every year,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 just hope it鈥檚 not going to rain or sleet as it has in the past. A nice sunny day in the 40s would be perfect, but I鈥檝e done it in sleet and tornado warnings in the past.鈥 His final preparation for the Little Rock Marathon will be to have crawfish etouffee. Some runners have a night-before tradition of eating mounds of spaghetti or jars of peanut butter, but having the seafood dish at the Faded Rose Restaurant in Little Rock with his wife has become a favorite pre-race tradition for Anson. ]]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock employee prepares for Little Rock Marathon /news-archive/2018/02/27/diane-johnson-little-rock-marathon/ Tue, 27 Feb 2018 14:56:43 +0000 /news/?p=69534 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock employee prepares for Little Rock Marathon]]> When Jewel 鈥淒iane鈥 Johnson, 62, of Little Rock, saw that the University of Arkansas at Little Rock was helping sponsor employees participating in the 5k, 10k, half marathon, and marathon, she was simultaneously intrigued and nervous by the prospect of competing in the 5K.聽 鈥淭he idea of doing the Little Rock Marathon makes my hand shake,鈥 said Johnson, foster parent trainer at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock MidSouth. 鈥淚 have done one 5K before, and I have been preparing myself for this. Trainers offer advice for participating in the Little Rock Marathon]]> Ever since the Little Rock Marathon began 16 years ago, Tom and Hobbit Singleton, of Maumelle, have been training runners to participate in the 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon.聽 The couple, who will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary in October, manage nearly 2,000 people who sign for up the marathon-training program annually, including about 200 people who participate in weekly runs 50 out of 52 weeks per year. 鈥淭he only weeks they take off are the week of the marathon and the week after the marathon,鈥 Tom said. One of their favorite parts of the training program is the 鈥淐ouch to 5K鈥 program, which specializes in helping new runners who want to compete in the Little Rock Marathon鈥檚 5K race. 鈥淚 want somebody off the couch and changing their life by changing their lifestyle,鈥 he said. 鈥淔or me, as a coach, it鈥檚 a win to get somebody in any of the four races. My first goal is to get any of you off the couch. My next goal is to keep you involved in training and make it enjoyable enough that you will accomplish your goal.鈥 One of the smartest things new runners can do to keep themselves motivated is to share their goals with people who will keep them accountable for their actions. During training, it鈥檚 important to stick to a training schedule, take plenty of rest days, and to train at your own pace. 鈥淵ou need to train slower than you plan to race,鈥 Tom said. 鈥淚 have never aspired to place. My goal is to finish, and I want to have a good time. The reason I tell you to run slower when you train is that you need enough energy to continue your training. You should never run the same pace as somebody else. You should run your pace. If you train for the marathon, you will meet other people who run your pace.鈥 In the days leading up to race, the Singletons advise making no changes to your routine. 鈥淒on鈥檛 do anything strange in the days leading up to the marathon,鈥 Hobbit said. 鈥淒on鈥檛 change your diet. Don鈥檛 eat 15 pounds of spaghetti the night before the race just because someone else is doing it. Don鈥檛 buy a new outfit. Wear what you have been wearing to train. If this is your first race, don鈥檛 wear your race shirt for the first time on race day. They will know you are a newbie, and you don鈥檛 want to find out your shirt is uncomfortable during the race.鈥 On race day, participants should arrive early to find a parking spot to minimize stress. Setting your own pace is important, Tom said, so that you don鈥檛 tire out early in the race. It鈥檚 also helpful to have people cheering you on, since that can give participants an extra boost of energy to complete the race. For first-time racers, the Singletons suggest enjoying the positive environment of the marathon and having a good time. 鈥淚 wouldn鈥檛 get very serious,鈥 Hobbit said. 鈥淚 would train to make sure that I can do the distance, but I would use it as an opportunity to have a good time and have fun. I would just make sure that you can do the distance. A lot of the injuries I see are because people try to do too much too quickly. People often run too fast or too quickly too fast.鈥 For more information, sign up for the Little Rock Marathon鈥檚 or contact Employee Wellness Coordinator Karl Lenser at 501-907-8974 or kjlenser@ualr.edu.]]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to host training seminar for Little Rock Marathon participants /news-archive/2018/01/16/ua-little-rock-host-training-seminar-little-rock-marathon-participants/ Tue, 16 Jan 2018 14:17:41 +0000 /news/?p=68981 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock to host training seminar for Little Rock Marathon participants]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host a training seminar for all faculty, staff, alumni, and students participating in the 16th annual March 3-4.聽 Tom and Hobbit Singleton, who coach training programs for the marathon, will lead the workshop at noon Thursday, Jan. 25, in the Donaghey Student Center Leadership Lounge.
