The Emerging Writers Institute for high school students will be held from 1:30-5 p.m. June 6-10. The Young Writers Camp will be held for students entering grades 3-5 from June 27 to July 1 from 8 a.m. to noon. This year鈥檚 Young Writers Camp will be led by Heather Hummel, associate professor of creative writing at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. She has been involved with the National Writing Project and the Little Rock Writing Project since 2007. Hummel will be joined by Susan Heffern-Shelton, a longtime team leader with the Little Rock Writing Project and pre-K teacher at Fulbright Elementary. The cost for each camp is $150. The Emerging Writers Institute for students entering 6th-8th grade will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 28 to July 2. The workshop for students entering 9th-12th grade will be from 1:30-5 p.m. June 28 to July 2.聽 Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced writers from the university鈥檚 . 鈥淲e want to give the students a great writing experience,鈥 said Greg Graham, director of the Little Rock Writing Project. 鈥淭his summer we will be working on characterization and developing characters in a story. The students will also interview the oldest person they know and write a piece on them.鈥 At the institute, students will find their voice as a writer, discover tips to improve their writing, and turn an ethnographic interview into an essay. As a group, the young writers will collaboratively design a book of their best writing pieces from the weeklong workshop. A Young Writers Camp for students entering grades 3-5 will be held June 17-21 from 8 a.m. until noon daily on the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus. Students will write stories, poems, biographies, tall tales, skits, and more.聽They鈥檒l create mini books and develop a writer鈥檚 notebook as well as a class publication. Middle and high school students can develop their writing skills at the Emerging Writers Institute, taking place June 24-28. The institute has expanded to include sixth grade this year.聽Middle school students entering grades 6-8 will meet 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. High school students in grades 9-12 will meet 1:30-5 p.m. During the week, students will work closely with experienced writers learning to find their voice as writers, develop characters, and discover new tricks for developing a piece of writing. Little Rock Writing Project to host institute for K-12 teachers]]> Arkansas teachers who instruct kindergarten through high school students are invited to learn innovative approaches to the writing process and improve their teaching practices during a summer institute at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.聽 The Little Rock Writing Project, hosted by the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Rhetoric and Writing, will hold the 2018 Invitational Summer Institute June 11-22. The institute will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Thanks to a grant from the National Writing Project, the institute is free for all participants. During the summer program, participants will discover new ways to approach the writing process, study best practices to teach writing, explore ways to integrate technology into the writing process, and learn about new research. Future authors attend Young Writers Camp at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> The camp for writers in third through sixth grade happened to coincide with a planned visit to her grandparents in Little Rock while Mullins鈥 parents were traveling to celebrate their anniversary. 鈥淚 loved camp,鈥 Maddy Mullins said. 鈥淚t was a lot of fun. I liked being creative through all the writing activities.鈥 Each day started with participants writing about a prompt, such as finding a talking dog on the front porch. They also worked in small writing groups, and read in front of other participants. Campers created a writer鈥檚 notebook and composed poems about their heritage. In addition, they developed original characters, turned them into stick puppets, and wrote a skit about them. 鈥淭his has been a full, fun-filled week of writing,鈥 said Pam Maisen, director of Young Writers Camp. 鈥淓ach day we were able to use our imagination, expand our vocabulary, and explore various ways to make writing come alive. Many stories, friendships, and lasting memories were created this week.鈥 Young Writers Camp is one of many summer camps that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock hosts to explore skills in musical theatre, writing, computer coding, robotics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, soccer, and more. The culmination of the camp was an anthology, containing a story written by each of the 2o campers. During the closing reception on Friday, June 23, campers excitedly shared these anthologies and read their stories in front of a room packed with proud parents, grandparents, and siblings. Dent Gitchel, assistant professor in the rehabilitation counseling program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, said his daughter, Lilah Gitchell, couldn鈥檛 wait to go to camp. 鈥淗er self-confidence in writing has grown,鈥 Gitchel said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 always been creative. This week, she鈥檚 been working to develop her stories at home. She鈥檚 always borrowing my phone, opening up the notes app, and working on her stories wherever we go.鈥 After attending the camp, Lilah has found her future career. 鈥淚 want to be a writer when I grow up,鈥 she said.
