��Vlog��ý Little Rock to Host Rent-a-Puppy Nov. 17

Update: Rent-A-Puppy’s location has changed to the lawn in front of the Donaghey Student Center. Calling all dog lovers! ��Vlog��ý Little Rock will once again host Rent-a-Puppy Nov. 17. The ��Vlog��ý Little Rock community will have the opportunity to play and socialize with rescue and shelter dogs of all ages from 2-5 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Chi Omega Courtyard outside Ottenheimer Library. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s Chi Omega Gamma Zeta chapter organizes the event, which raises funds for the chapter’s national philanthropy, the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The national nonprofit organization grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses. Rent-A-Puppy offers dog rescue and shelter organizations in central Arkansas some public exposure and gives their adoptable dogs an opportunity to receive affection and, potentially, new homes. Attendees donate $5 per 10 minutes to pet and play with dogs. Toys will be provided, and the dogs will be on leashes.

In the Chi Omega Courtyard outside Ottenheimer Library, the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock community had the chance to play and interact with rescue and shelter dogs from Southern Hearts Rescue on Sept. 30. The was founded in 1895 and chartered on ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s campus in 1964. The Make-A-Wish Foundation, a national nonprofit organization who help children with critical diseases fulfill their hearts’ desires, is their philanthropy. The sorority raised $965 dollars for the cause. “Right now we have enough money to grant one wish, and we hope to possibly grant two wishes with this fundraiser,” said Lexi Brooks, community service director for Chi Omega. Southern Hearts Animal Rescue is a local nonprofit in Bauxite that saves abandoned and starving animals living on the streets. They have between 60-70 dogs at their facility and brought four who are up for adoption to the event. “We do this because it’s our passion to do this,” said Whitney Morrison, founder of Southern Hearts Animal Rescue. “As a nonprofit organization as well, I love Make-A-Wish, they are amazing.” The Rent-A-Puppy dogs included Josie, a 2-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier. She is described as a young female dog who is friendly, playful, and loves other dogs. Hera is a female German Shepherd. She is five 5 months old and is affectionate, playful, and loves people. They also brought two hound puppies, Colt and Dolly, who are German Shorthaired Pointers around seven months old. Colt, the male, is smart, loves kisses, and children. Dolly, the female, is funny, friendly, and loves children too. “Both of us miss our dogs at home, so we decided it was a great opportunity to play with some of them,” said Colin Weatherly, sophomore mechanical engineering major and Tyler Hosey, sophomore architectural engineering major. “This event is a great way to meet dogs that are up for adoption right now and it raises money for Make-A-Wish so win-win.” For anyone interested, all four dogs have been fully vetted, fully vaccinated, and the adoption fees are low. Even more animals to adopt from them can be found . “Southern Hearts Rescue is such a wonderful organization because they are constantly going out and saving dogs that are abused or neglected,” said Carol Blann, Make-A-Wish coordinator and Southern Hearts Rescue volunteer. “By the time they get through with them, they make someone a wonderful pet.” For more information, contact Lexi Brooks at ajbrooks1@ualr.edu or 870-340-5584 to help Chi Omega. After taking a year off due to COVID-19, the popular Rent-A-Puppy event will return to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Thursday, Sept. 30. The ��Vlog��ý Little Rock community will have the opportunity to play and socialize with rescue and shelter dogs of all ages from 3-8 p.m. Sept. 30 in the Chi Omega Courtyard outside Ottenheimer Library. Rent-A-Puppy offers dog rescue and shelter organizations in central Arkansas some public exposure and gives their adoptable dogs an opportunity to receive affection and, potentially, new homes. Attendees may rent a dog for 10 minutes for $5. Toys will be provided, and dogs will be on leashes. There will also be an area to take photos with the dogs. Donations will also be accepted for Southern Hearts Rescue. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s Chi Omega Gamma Zeta chapter organizes the event, which raises funds for the Foundation. Soccer Star Morgan Smocovich to Begin Nursing Career in Medical Surgical Unit

When Morgan Smocovich arrived at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in 2017, she was an active student who liked to volunteer through the Chancellor’s Leadership Corps and and a successful member of the soccer team, but she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her life. “I really enjoy helping people, and I’m a very much a people person,” she said. “It all goes together. Honestly, I remember one day sitting in my English class talking with my friends and deciding that I wanted to be a nurse.” Smocovich, a senior nursing major from Frisco, Texas, is graduating this month with an associate degree in nursing and a minor in business administration. She will be moving to Mississippi to work in a medical surgical unit at a hospital. “I want to work in the NICU eventually, but the hospital decided it’s best for me to practice my skills and get oriented on a med surgical unit first,” she said. “I am very excited. I love to help people in general, and I jumped at the opportunity.” Smocovich started off at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock as a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Corps during her freshman and sophomore years, where she volunteered for Our House and Make-A-Wish Foundation. “I really liked being in CLC,” Smocovich said. “I think it’s a good way to get people to meet other people outside your own group. For me, it was the athletic clique. It really helped you get your first-year experience and offered you a group of people you could go to if you needed help.” In the School of Nursing, Smocovich said her most memorable experiences came through exercises in the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Center for Simulation Innovation, which offers simulation-based clinical learning experiences. “I remember all of my simulation lab experiences. Even though you are working on simulation machines, you still go into those experiences with all of the fear in your body and your anxiety,” she said. “Your instructors are watching you and you feel like you are in a real hospital setting. They are great learning experiences. They offer room for us to make mistakes, and our instructors will correct us and show us how to do it the right way. I feel like there are some mistakes I will never make again because my instructor was there to walk me through it.” As a nursing student during the pandemic, Smocovich was also able to assist at community health clinics. “I volunteered at Health Services, and I was screening people and helping them figure out how to administer their COVID tests,” she said. “I enjoyed being a part of that, and I was glad the university was able to provide the school’s students and employees and members of the community a way to get tested.” Smocovich also spent the past four years as a student-athlete and is wrapping up her collegiate soccer career. She was named a Second Team All-Sun Belt honoree for the 2020-21 season. She also finished her senior season by writing her name in the , ranking third in program history for career assists with 15 total. “I’ve enjoyed being on the soccer team and I love my teammates,” Smocovich said. “Although soccer presented a challenge doing nursing at the same time, it gave me a release. I could go on the game field and the practice field and not worry about my IV insertion skills or stuff like that. I’ve always grown up doing it. It’s fun. I love getting to travel with my teammates. You are with each other 24/7 and it’s been very impactful.” After her graduation, Smocovich plans to take her NCLEX exam this summer before moving to Mississippi, where she will join her fiancée, Chase Coker. Smocovich and Coker, a former member of the Trojan baseball team, met as student-athletes at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. The two will marry in summer 2022.

Chi Omega exceeds goal with Rent-A-Puppy event

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s Chi Omega Gamma Zeta chapter raised more than $800 for the during the third annual Rent-A-Puppy event.�� The Oct. 28 fundraiser drew more than 150 people to spend 15 minutes with the puppy of their choice for $5. Spectators were drawn to the innocence of the furry animals, many contemplating the idea of adoption. “In past years, we have raised around $500,” said Lacie Thomas, Chi Omega community service and philanthropy chair. “We are so excited that we beat that total, and we know next year we will raise even more than that.” To aid in the event’s success, animal shelters and rescue centers in Central Arkansas, including Arkanpaws Animal Rescue, Mayflower Animal Control, and Little Rock Animal Village, provided puppies of numerous breeds, shapes, and sizes for rent.

“We really enjoy bringing our dogs down because not only do the students get to socialize and debrief from taking tests, but it’s also good for the dogs to be exposed to people,” said Danielle Maddox, director of Arkanpaws Animal Rescue. The members of Chi Omega plan to continue this philanthropy for years to come, meaning that many more ��Vlog��ýLR students and employees will get the chance to rent a puppy. �� “It’s really stress relieving,” said ��Vlog��ýLR student Caleb Dather. “It’s comforting and it takes your mind off of things.” In the upper right photo, a ��Vlog��ýLR��student gets some quality puppy time during the Rent-A-Puppy event.
