Now over a decade later, he graduated with a master鈥檚 degree in public history on Dec. 17. Mitchell鈥檚 thesis explores written content in , a German-language newspaper based in Little Rock during World War I. The Echo is the only surviving newspaper source about Arkansas鈥檚 German community, as well as the only insight into what the German press was printing during the war. Mitchell got his inspiration for the topic from the year he spent as a foreign exchange student in Vienna, Austria, in high school. 鈥淭hat experience really cemented the language for me,鈥 Mitchell said. 鈥淲ithout it, I wouldn鈥檛 have been able to do this research at all, since most of it was in German.鈥 Mitchell focused his research on the years between 1914 and 1918, comparing the tone and content before and after the United States entered the war to see how the newspaper handled the growing anti-German sentiment in the country during the shift. Research also came from, 鈥淒as Arkansas Echo: A Year in the Life of Germans in the Nineteenth-Century South鈥 by Kathleen Condray, associate professor of German at the University of Arkansas. The book examines the topics covered during its inaugural year, including the newspaper鈥檚 crusade against prohibition, advocacy for German schools and language, and stance on immigration. 鈥淥verall, I鈥檇 say the program prepares you for the field really well, especially when it comes to research,鈥 Mitchell said. 鈥淚 even had a graduate assistantship for the Center for Arkansas History and Culture downtown to supplement my archival learning and give me hands-on experience.鈥 He organized his information on a database, the idea of which he credits to Dr. Charles Romney, professor of history and graduate coordinator of the public history program. 鈥淚 collected about 300 articles, so it was a lot to keep track of,鈥 Mitchell said. 鈥淭he database gave me key searchability, helped me identify common themes, and what was going on. Staying organized is one of the most important parts of a research process.鈥漖]> Transfer Student Spotlight on Payton Dhooge /news-archive/2021/10/22/payton-dhooge/ Fri, 22 Oct 2021 13:16:08 +0000 /news/?p=80173 ... Graduating student-athlete returns to Germany to pursue professional soccer career /news-archive/2020/12/17/dorothea-greulich-commencement/ Thu, 17 Dec 2020 16:53:00 +0000 /news/?p=78090 ... Graduating student-athlete returns to Germany to pursue professional soccer career]]> After graduating with two bachelor鈥檚 degrees, a University of Arkansas at Little Rock soccer star has returned home to Germany with her sights set on a professional soccer career.听 Dorothea Greulich, a native of Potsdam, Germany, graduates this month with bachelor鈥檚 degrees in mass communication and political science. She joined 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2016 after playing two years for the soccer team, FFC Turbine Potsdam. 鈥淲hen I was in my senior year in high school, I decided I wanted to study in the states and play soccer at the same time,鈥 Greulich said. 鈥淚 got in contact with the coaches at Little Rock. I really liked the coaches and the team, and I decided to come here. It was very nice for an international student. I automatically had 20 friends. It鈥檚 like having a second family.鈥 Having played soccer for the past 15 years, Greulich developed a love for the sport and team camaraderie at a young age. 鈥淚 started playing soccer when I was 8 years old,鈥 Greulich said. 鈥淚 fell in love with it and never stopped. I think it鈥檚 about being around people and trying to accomplish something together.鈥 During her career as a Trojan, Greulich experienced some major highs and lows. One of the highlights of her career was when the soccer team won the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the first time in program history and earned their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018. Greulich was selected for the All-Sun Belt First Team for the second year in a row. 鈥淚t was a really good team that year, and it was very nice winning,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was so much hard work that we felt had really paid off. We got so much support from campus and from people who we didn鈥檛 even know cared about us.鈥 In her senior year, Greulich experienced two devastating injuries that she had to overcome to make it back on the field. 鈥淚 tore my ACL late in the season my junior year, and then I came back 10 months later and tore it again my second game back during my senior year,鈥 Greulich said. 鈥淏ecause of the injuries, I was eligible for another year of college soccer. It took almost 10 months, and then I played the rest of this season.鈥 In addition to her career as a student-athlete, Greulich has coached youth soccer teams, participated in the Model Arab League, and interned with the Little Rock Athletic Communications Department in 2020.

鈥淒oro came to Little Rock from Germany and was a key member of our soccer team for five years,鈥 said Rand Champion, assistant athletic director for communications. 鈥淎n All-Sun Belt player, she was a major factor in helping the Trojans win the program’s first ever Sun Belt title and NCAA tournament appearance, facing Arkansas in the first round in 2018. She also suffered a major knee injury and fought back to play her final season this year. She has also been an intern in our office and a great ambassador for our university, earning all-academic honors in each of her five seasons.鈥 With two degrees in hand, Greulich has moved back to Germany, where she is looking forward to spending time with the family she hasn鈥檛 seen in a year, as well as pursue opportunities in professional soccer. Since Greulich came to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock not knowing what she wanted to study, her advice for fellow students to be successful is to be open to new possibilities. 鈥淚f you come in and don鈥檛 know what you want to study, it鈥檚 important to try different classes and see what fits. You should always be open minded to what the professors throw at you, because you don鈥檛 always know what will help you in the long-term.鈥]]>

An active supporter of journalism training for high school students, Giese conceived the idea for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 Summer Media Camp, a one-week residential experience for Arkansas high school students. From 2010 to 2011, he directed the camp and oversaw every aspect, from fundraising to producing promotional material, teaching seminars, and chaperoning campers to tours of local television stations. To ensure students could attend the camp at no cost, he raised more than $24,000 to provide scholarships for Arkansas students.听 In another service project, he enlisted McClellan High School students in writing and producing a public service announcement promoting healthy habits for teens. As part of the grant-supported project, he wrote the curriculum for McClellan鈥檚 first media production course. Giese served on the advisory board for the Metropolitan Career-Technical Center and Accelerated Learning Center and presented talks to middle school students in the Duke TIP program. Graduating student journalist selected for internship with Arkansas Newspaper Foundation]]> A University of Arkansas at Little Rock spring graduate with a passion for storytelling has been selected for a competitive summer internship that will serve as the next step in his promising career as a journalist.听 Kolton Rutherford, of Maumelle, has graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in mass communication and a minor in sports management. Following graduation, Rutherford has been selected for a summer internship with the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation, which sponsors college journalists to work as interns in newspapers who are members of the Arkansas Press Association. Rutherford will spend the summer working at the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway.听 In the fall, Rutherford has been accepted into 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 graduate program in professional and technical writing. After earning his master鈥檚 degree, he plans to work as a reporter or in sports communication, though his love of journalism began long ago. 鈥淚鈥檝e been interested in journalism for most of my life,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 loved sports growing up. While I played sports until I was 14, I wasn鈥檛 very good at playing, but I knew a lot about sports. I come from a family who has done a lot of writing. First, I got into sports writing. Being a sports writer one day was my plan coming into school, but now I鈥檝e grown to love all kinds of journalism.鈥 Just as Rutherford always knew he would become a journalist, he was just as certain that he would one day join the Trojan family. 鈥淚 knew from the ninth grade on that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock was the school for me,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was close to my home, and I had heard good things about its mass communication program. After speaking to the professors when I was in the 11th grade, that is when I made the choice.鈥 He came to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock on a Chancellor鈥檚 Leadership Corps scholarship with a goal to gain as much experience as possible. He鈥檚 stayed true to that goal, serving as sports editor of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 student newspaper, The Forum, an athletics communication intern for Little Rock Athletics, and a news intern for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio. 鈥淭he most important thing I鈥檝e learned in college is to learn as much as possible,鈥 Rutherford said. 鈥淚 worked at The Forum for four years. I鈥檝e done two internships. I鈥檝e learned new skills. I鈥檝e really worked hard to become a well-rounded journalist. I have experience in multiple fields now, and I鈥檓 not closing the door on any path.鈥 Rutherford is thankful to several of the professors and journalists who have guided him during his time at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淚 would say two of my favorite professors were Sonny Rhodes and Chris Etheridge in the mass communication department,鈥 he said. 鈥淪onny鈥檚 been my advisor for the past four years. He鈥檚 been a great help. I really look up to him. Last May, I met Professor Etheridge. He was my internship advisor, and he helped me to understand how much I could learn by going to K糖心Vlog传媒R. The staff at K糖心Vlog传媒R, including Michael Hibblen, Sarah Kellogg, and Daniel Breen, has been a great help this past semester during my internship.鈥 Rutherford is an award-winning college journalist who鈥檚 received honors in feature writing, sports writing, and outstanding reporting from the Arkansas College Media Association and the Arkansas Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. As a freelance journalist, he鈥檚 been published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the Daily Record, and the Lewiston Sun-Journal on stories covering local news, sports, education, and government affairs. 鈥淥n the academic side, my internship with K糖心Vlog传媒R was by far my favorite experience. A close second was working for our campus newspaper,鈥 he said. 鈥淥utside of that, I met my soon-to-be wife at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. Katie Kornreich graduated last year. She was an American sign language interpreting major, and we met in a science class. We were supposed to get married this August, but we鈥檝e now moved it to August 2021.鈥 His advice for new students to be successful is to take advantage of all available opportunities to gain as much experience as possible. 鈥淚 would tell new students to try to learn as much as you can in many different areas,鈥 Rutherford said. 鈥淚t will pay off if you can do multiple things, and you can do them well. When I first came to school, I thought I would just be a writer. I鈥檝e now learned how to use cameras and work for a radio station. I鈥檝e learned so much more than I ever imagined.鈥]]> Forum staff wins 14 awards in Arkansas college media contest /news-archive/2020/04/29/forum-staff-wins-14-awards-in-arkansas-college-media-contest/ Wed, 29 Apr 2020 22:11:10 +0000 /news/?p=76727 ...
