The Model Arab League is a diplomatic simulation and leadership development program designed to help students learn about the politics and history of the Middle East. The league, established by the , focuses on the 22 countries that make up the League of Arab States. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 event is supported by the Middle Eastern Studies Program and is run by the students in Dr. Rebecca Glazier鈥檚 upper-division Model Arab League course. The students running the conference will also participate in a National Model Arab League conference in Washington, D.C. in March. The two-day event will be held in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Fine Arts building. The 9 a.m. opening ceremony on Feb. 24 will include remarks from various 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty and staff along with Dr. Mahmoud Al-Denawy Hassanein of the Little Rock Islamic Center. During the event, high school students will serve as delegates on committees working to reach agreements and write resolutions on contentious issues in the Arab World from refugees to water scarcity to cultural preservation. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students will fill the roles of officers, such as secretary general and parliamentarian, while also serving as committee chairs and award organizers. The closing ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 and feature three student speakers who participated in the International Model Arab League in Rabat, Morocco, in November 2016. 聽 Following the speakers, High School Model Arab League Secretary-General Brian Gregory will conduct the closing session. The ceremony will conclude with awards given for accomplishments during the event such as best paper by committee and best delegate by committee. Faculty and students are encouraged to think creatively about the activities the grants could fund. Projects related to any aspect of the Middle East or Middle Eastern studies are eligible. Faculty and students from all majors and departments are encouraged to apply. Examples of student grants include participation in an archaeological expedition in a Middle Eastern country, historical research, a summer language study program, study abroad in a Middle Eastern country, and internships. Faculty grants have supported such activities as the creation of new courses, bringing a speaker to campus, and research activities. The committee will begin reviewing applications on Feb. 3, 2017. Applications can be submitted until May 15, 2017, or until all available funds have been awarded. All grant recipients must deliver a public program on their project for the campus community and submit a report documenting how the funds were used by Jan. 31, 2018. International Model Arab League participants will hold panel discussion on Morocco trip]]> Dr. Rebecca Glazier, faculty advisor to the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Model Arab League and associate professor of political science, recently returned from leading 15 University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Clinton School of Public Service students to the International Model Arab League in Morocco.听 The group will tell all about their adventures in Morocco during a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in Donaghey Student Center Room 214 A. The Model Arab League is a student leadership development program created by the. It is a simulation of an international organization, the League of Arab States, which represents 22 countries. The conference was held Nov. 9-13 at the Universit茅 International de Rabat, where 糖心Vlog传媒LR students acted as representatives of Somalia, Iraq, and Qatar. Many of the students won awards for the representation of their countries.听Zach Glembin won distinguished delegate for the Environmental Committee; Nora Bouzihay won outstanding delegate for Social Affairs Committe, and Joseph Jones won outstanding delegate for the Joint Defense Council. Also, Brian Gregory won honorable mention for Social Affairs Committee, Miguel Lopez won honorable mention for Joint Defense Council, and Brittany Kirtley won honorable mention for the Environmental Committee. The students attending the Model Arab League included Alexandra Barnes, Nora Bouzihay, Natasha Burch, Robert Cole, Naty Doris, Andrea Elias, Zachary Glembin, Brian Gregory, Joseph Jones, Brittany Kirtley, Amelia Loken, Miguel Lopez, Emily Powell, Rhett Smith, and Demas Soliman. After the conference, the students spent three days exploring Morocco, including riding camels in the Sahara desert. The students kept a daily blog of their adventures in Morocco that can be viewed on the School of Public Affairs website. It is a simulation of an international organization, the League of Arab States, which represents 22 countries. 鈥淭he Middle East is an area of critical importance to international politics,鈥 said Dr. Rebecca Glazier, director of the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Model Arab League and associate professor of political science. 鈥淢any of the issues there 鈥 from religious extremism to water shortages to gender inequality 鈥 are issues that matter for the whole world. Thinking through potential solutions to these problems is a great way for students to get engaged and feel hopeful about the future of the Middle East and the world,鈥 she said. During the two-day event, high school students from across the state will serve as delegates on committees. The conference will be run by 糖心Vlog传媒LR students, who will chair committees, organize awards, and serve in key roles, such as secretary general. 鈥淭he simulation is a great hands-on, experiential learning opportunity for the students,鈥 Glazier said. 鈥淭hey get to research, practice public speaking, and work with other delegates through diplomacy to reach a solution. These kinds of skills are difficult to learn from lectures alone, and our 糖心Vlog传媒LR students benefit, too, from teaching and running the conference. Free Arabic class offered, Spring 2016]]> The Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Program has offered non-credit Arabic classes for several years. In the future, for-credit classes in Arabic will be offered for the first time to 糖心Vlog传媒LR students through a partnership with the Department of International and Second Languages. Dr. Abeer El-Anwar, an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, will teach the free beginner course this semester. She also will offer for-credit Elementary Arabic I and Elementary Arabic II in the fall. I believe this partnership and weaving language and multicultural understanding into the curriculum will establish avenues conducive to 糖心Vlog传媒LR’s commitment to 鈥榚ducating tomorrow’s global citizen,鈥欌 El-Anwar said. El-Anwar is a distinguished linguist who specializes in translation studies and ESL. She is a native speaker of Arabic with a doctorate in linguistics from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, who has taught various ESL and translation courses from 1999 until 2005. She joined 糖心Vlog传媒LR in 2007.
