On behalf of the staff and listeners of KLRE and K糖心Vlog传媒R, I want to say a heartfelt thanks to the donor. The stations will use this gift to strengthen and expand their services as the region’s NPR news and information provider, classical music radio station, and as a local and regional news organization.” The anonymous gift comes on the final day of the drive and represents 10 times the drive鈥檚 fundraising goal of $150,000. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio also raised $100,000 by 8 a.m. Oct. 8, bringing the drive鈥檚 running fundraising total to $1.6 million. More than 80,000 people listen to K糖心Vlog传媒R and KLRE every week. Housed within the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio is a public service unit of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. University students gain professional experience by working as interns and part-time staff members who take part in all aspects of KLRE and K糖心Vlog传媒R operations with a specific focus on news reporting and broadcast production. 鈥淲e are elated at this news,鈥 said Dr. Sarah Beth Estes, dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education. 鈥淭he staff of KLRE/K糖心Vlog传媒R work tirelessly to provide quality news, programs, and music to central Arkansas. The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio Operating Endowment will provide an ongoing stream of operating funds to support the public radio stations for generations to come. The endowment is expected to provide around $60,000 per year to support the reporting, music, and cultural programming on central Arkansas鈥檚 two public radio stations. 鈥淭his generous endowment provides both stability and a steady revenue source that allows us to plan for the future of K糖心Vlog传媒R and KLRE,鈥 said Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for university advancement. 鈥淭his anonymous donation will leave a lasting impact on public radio in our community for years to come.鈥 K糖心Vlog传媒R 89.1 is a National Public Radio affiliate and has been here to report on the COVID-19 pandemic, the rollout of vaccines, the huge economic challenges, the contentious election process, the great disruptions to education, the renewed focus on justice and equity, and much more. We have seen the evidence of this first-hand in the pandemic and in the run-up to the 2020 election,” said Nathan Vandiver, general manager of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio. “It’s an honor to serve our community in this way, and it’s especially an honor for the hard work of our news team to be recognized among such an impressive group of journalists from across the region.” K糖心Vlog传媒R News received honors on six stories from the past year. “It’s great to see K糖心Vlog传媒R’s news department being honored for its reporting, especially when competing against radio and television stations from states within this region of the country,” K糖心Vlog传媒R News Director Michael Hibblen said. “I’m extremely proud of the work of our news staff.” Daniel Breen, K糖心Vlog传媒R Morning Edition host and reporter, received second place honors in Political Coverage, Broadcast and Education Coverage, Broadcast for his stories, , and,听. “The breadth of what you covered, while focusing on the volunteer, is impressive,” judges said of his political entry, and of his education story, “This was a very strong entry. The story included a lot of voices with different perspectives on the problem and how to address it. Well done.” Sarah Kellogg, K糖心Vlog传媒R’s politics and government reporter received third place honors in Political Coverage, Broadcast for her story, . Judges called her work, a “really smart use of natural sound.” K糖心Vlog传媒R News Director Michael Hibblen received second place honors in Health/Science Coverage, Broadcast for his story, . Judges also made note of Hibblen’s “nice use of natural sound throughout” the story. Alexandria Brown, who reports and hosts All Things Considered and Weekend Edition for K糖心Vlog传媒R received third place honors in Features, Broadcast, for her story, . Judges called Brown’s story “straightforward and interesting.” Brown is a student in 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s School of Mass Communication. Judges also recognized freelance reporter Anna Stitt, who produced a series,听, for K糖心Vlog传媒R News. This series was supported by the National Geographic Society鈥檚 COVID-19 Emergency Fund for Journalists. Stitt’s series received third place honors in the Documentary/Investigative, Broadcast category. Alexandria Brown, a junior mass communication major with a concentration in journalism from England, Arkansas, has aspirations to work as a broadcast reporter after her graduation from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2022. 鈥淚鈥檓 honestly so grateful to have been awarded the scholarship,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淚鈥檇 like to thank the scholarship chair and the members of Arkansas Press Women for giving back to students like me. This scholarship will grant me more journalism opportunities to advance in my career and reach the goal of informing our democracy every day.鈥 The APW scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate college student in Arkansas who is planning a career in mass communication or journalism. Funding for this scholarship comes from APW鈥檚 Maudine Sanders Education Fund. Sanders, a previous owner of the Springdale Morning News, was a long-time member of Arkansas Press Women before her passing in 2011. “We’re excited to support Alexandria in her journalism journey,鈥 said Kristin Netterstrom Higgins, president of Arkansas Press Women. 鈥淗er student experiences in the newsroom and on the local NPR affiliate show her strong desire to tell people’s stories and give them a voice. The Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust was established in 1981 to support and promote quality educational, cultural, human services, and health care programming for all people. 鈥淔or me, public radio provides news I know I can trust,鈥 said Lisa Speer, trustee and administrator of the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust. 鈥淭oday, we are inundated with information from a variety of sources, not all of them credible, and it has gotten increasingly more difficult to differentiate reliable news sources from sources that are merely based on opinion. When I tune into public radio, I know that I am getting information that I can count on to be as fair and unbiased as possible.鈥 The Sturgis Trust is gifting 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio with $28,718 for a backup generator for KLRE Classical 90.5, which will allow listeners uninterrupted access to their music during power outages. The 40,000-watt tower that broadcasts KLRE, is located at Metropolitan Career-Technical Center in Little Rock. The new generator will be installed in June. 鈥淧ower outages cause KLRE service disruptions an average of six times per year,鈥 Vandiver said. 鈥A propane-powered backup generator at KLRE tower would allow for uninterrupted KLRE broadcast during Entergy service outages.鈥 Additionally, the Sturgis Trust has also donated $7,963 for a second air conditioner to cool the equipment that transmits K糖心Vlog传媒R FM 89.1. A new HVAC system has already been installed at Shinall Mountain in West Little Rock, where the radio station鈥檚 tower and transmitter are located. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio is a public service of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Its two stations, K糖心Vlog传媒R FM 89.1 and KLRE Classical 90.5, provide news and cultural programming to 84,000 people each week throughout Arkansas. K糖心Vlog传媒R is central Arkansas鈥檚 NPR station and KLRE is the only FM radio station in Arkansas dedicated fully to classical music programming. Roy Sturgis was one of 10 children of an Arkansas farmer and homemaker. In 1933, Roy Sturgis married Texas native Christine Johns. They became very successful in the timber, lumber, and sawmill industries in Arkansas. They were passionate about educational opportunities for young people and supported organizations working in the areas of health, social services, and the arts. I look forward to continuing the work of our staff and the Friends of K糖心Vlog传媒R/KLRE board has done these past three years to grow our service and find new ways to engage with our community.鈥 Vandiver, who also works as the program director, has served as the interim general manager of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio since 2016. Vandiver received a bachelor鈥檚 degree in journalism from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2011. He started his career at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio as an intern in the spring 2009 semester. After a successful internship, he was hired as a part-time reporter and anchor. Vandiver was promoted to program director in 2013. Vandiver lives in Little Rock with his wife, Julie, and sons, Henry and Charlie. 鈥淚 began my journey in radio as a listener,鈥 Vandiver said. 鈥淚 found public radio at a time in my life when I was seeking a broader perspective on how the world around me worked. My experience at K糖心Vlog传媒R began with an internship. As a university licensee at the state鈥檚 only metropolitan university, I look forward to providing similar opportunities for students to learn broadcasting and journalism through internships at a professional media setting.鈥 Last year, Vandiver was honored with the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network 20 over 20 Award. The award celebrates the accomplishments of nonprofit professionals over the age of 20 and establishes them as emerging or current leaders in the nonprofit sector. Vandiver said the key to success for a nonprofit organization is focusing on the people the nonprofit serves and carrying out the organization鈥檚 mission. Block, Beer & Bourbon returns in January to raise funds for public radio]]> The Friends of KLRE/K糖心Vlog传媒R will host the third annual event on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, to celebrate public radio and to raise funds for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Public Radio stations K糖心Vlog传媒R FM 89.1 and KLRE Classical 90.5. This year鈥檚 Block, Beer & Bourbon will take place 7-9:30 p.m. at the Albert Pike Masonic Center, 712 Scott St., in downtown Little Rock. Block, Beer & Bourbon showcases jazz artist Rodney Block, who will perform with the Rodney Block Collective, as well as a curated selection of beers and bourbons from O鈥橪ooney鈥檚 Wine and Liquor and food from The Pantry.
