Sydney Brazil, philosophy major, won the Outstanding Delegate Award for her notable efforts representing the country of Tunisia on the Council of Social Affairs ministers. Madison Rodgers, a junior political science major, received an honorable mention in the Outstanding Delegate category for her excellent work representing the Sultanate of Oman on the Council of Economic Affairs. They were among 17 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students who competed in the international competition for university students from Oct. 19-22 at the Universit茅 International de Rabat in Morocco. 鈥淚 was so grateful for this opportunity,鈥 Rodgers said. 鈥淭raveling to Morocco was truly life-changing and gave me a whole new perspective on how I look at life. I had never won an award at a Model Arab League conference before, and I put in a lot of work during this conference in pursuit of one. I will remember it forever.鈥 The major issues Rodger鈥檚 council discussed included addressing economic inequality and job insecurity in the region. 鈥淲e also discussed how to expand non-oil sectors in order to diversify the region鈥檚 economies,鈥 Rodgers said. 鈥淎rab citizens are all affected by economic inequalities and job insecurity and that affects the overall economy. Diversifying the economy is very important because if the demand for oil begins to shrink, this will cause a drop off in many Arab, oil-based economies, so other avenues need to be explored.鈥 The Model Arab League is a student leadership development program created by the. The students and their majors include Mariam Bouzihay, psychology; Sydney Brazil, philosophy; Madeline Burke, international studies; Prince Beasley, special education; Ryan Bourgoin, Molly Edwards, Landon DeKay, Anika Partlow-Loyall, Claire Mitchell, and Madison Rodgers, all political science; Solomon 鈥淩a鈥檖hael鈥 Davis, philosophy and international studies; Brittany Fugate, history; Maria Romero, marketing and international business; Issac Thomas, history and political science; Allie Woodville, political science and anthropology; Colin Davies, political science, psychology, and criminal justice; and Kaitlin Zakrzewski, criminal justice and anthropology. The Model Arab League is a student leadership development program created by the. It is a simulation of an international organization, the League of Arab States, which represents 22 countries. The conference will convene at the Universit茅 International de Rabat, where 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students will act as representatives of Sudan, Kuwait, Oman, Tunisia, and Morocco. They will tackle diplomatic panels on defense, Palestinian affairs, refugees, social issues, and environmental affairs. 鈥淢odel Arab League is a fantastic experience for students since they are able to take on the perspective of another country and learn how to use diplomatic skills to resolve international problems,鈥 said Dr. Rebecca Glazier, associate professor of political science who will be leading the trip. 鈥淭his is an amazing opportunity for our students, and one that few students get to have.鈥 Additionally, the students will experience a cultural tour of Morocco, including camel rides and camping in the Merzouga Desert. They will also visit the Todgha Gorges, a series of limestone river canyons in the High Atlas Mountains, Casablanca, and parliament, where they will meet with Moroccan political leaders. Sophomore Landon DeKay of Maumelle is looking forward to the trip: 鈥淚 am looking forward to immersing myself in a new culture that I have never experienced before,鈥 DeKay said. 鈥淭his is my first time traveling internationally, and it will be a great experience. I am most looking forward to the desert excursion, where I will be riding a camel for the first time.鈥 The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Middle Eastern Studies program is subsidizing the trip to promote study abroad opportunities for students, so the students are only paying $1,000 each to go on the trip. 鈥淭his trip is designed to make study abroad accessible for students who wouldn鈥檛 otherwise have the opportunity,鈥 Glazier said. 鈥淭his can be a life-changing experience for students to be immersed in a completely different culture and new location. That is why the Middle Eastern Studies Program is creating a new scholarship to fund study abroad opportunities. We hope to provide an opportunity to travel to Morocco every other year in the future.鈥 The students will be writing a daily blog of their adventures in Morocco that can be viewed on the School of Public Affairs website and will host a public event to discuss the trip and award the first 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Model Arab League Alumni Excellence Award on Friday, Nov. 8 at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Downtown. More than 400 students participated in the conference March 29 to April 2. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock team members represented Somalia, a country located on the Horn of Africa with a population of about 11 million people. 鈥淭he students conducted simulated diplomatic negotiations on a variety of important issues 鈥 听from the refugee crisis to water scarcity to combating terrorism,鈥 said Dr. Rebecca Glazier, faculty adviser of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Model Arab League and associate professor in the School of Public Affairs. The Model Arab League is a diplomatic simulation and leadership development program designed to help students learn about the politics and history of the Middle East. The league, established by the , focuses on the 22 countries that make up the League of Arab States. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 event is supported by the Middle Eastern Studies Program and is run by the students in Dr. Rebecca Glazier鈥檚 upper-division Model Arab League course. The students running the conference will also participate in a National Model Arab League conference in Washington, D.C. in March. The two-day event will be held in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Fine Arts building. The 9 a.m. opening ceremony on Feb. 24 will include remarks from various 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock faculty and staff along with Dr. Mahmoud Al-Denawy Hassanein of the Little Rock Islamic Center. During the event, high school students will serve as delegates on committees working to reach agreements and write resolutions on contentious issues in the Arab World from refugees to water scarcity to cultural preservation. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students will fill the roles of officers, such as secretary general and parliamentarian, while also serving as committee chairs and award organizers. The closing ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 and feature three student speakers who participated in the International Model Arab League in Rabat, Morocco, in November 2016. 听 Following the speakers, High School Model Arab League Secretary-General Brian Gregory will conduct the closing session. The ceremony will conclude with awards given for accomplishments during the event such as best paper by committee and best delegate by committee. The conference will be held Nov. 9-13 at the Universit茅 International de Rabat, where 糖心Vlog传媒LR students will act as representatives of Somalia, Iraq, and Qatar. They will tackle diplomatic panels on defense, Palestinian affairs, refugees, social issues, and environmental affairs. Dr. Rebecca Glazier, director of the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Model Arab League and associate professor of political science, is leading the trip. Larry Rhodes, learning technology coordinator for the 糖心Vlog传媒LR College of Social Sciences and Communications, is chaperoning and documenting the trip. Thanks to the generosity of the 糖心Vlog传媒LR Middle Eastern Studies program and the Universit茅 International de Rabat, each student is only paying $700 for the trip, including flights, meals, accommodations, transportation, conference fees, and activities. 鈥淭hose two organizations coming together is what really made this trip affordable and accessible to our students,鈥 Glazier said. 鈥淔or students to have access to short-term study abroad opportunities is amazing.鈥 In addition to the conference, the 糖心Vlog传媒LR students will also enjoy tours of Morocco, including camel rides and camping in the Merzouga Desert.
