Nearly 900 students arrive during move-in day]]> Nearly 900 students moved on campus Saturday, Aug. 13, during what one organizer called one of the smoothest move-in days in 糖心Vlog传媒LR history. The day went well thanks to the hard work of the Office of Campus Living staff and a high number of volunteers, according to Marc Glidden, 糖心Vlog传媒LR director of campus living. 鈥淲e got a lot of feedback about how things were running so smoothly, and that it was one of the best move-in day we have had in a while,鈥 Glidden said. 鈥淭hat is especially thanks to our staff who stayed out so late the night before to get things ready and the many volunteers who came to help the students and their families.鈥 Campus living staff stayed on campus until 2 a.m. the night before move-in day. The staff was back and ready for action at 7 a.m. They were going strong until the last student checked in at 9 p.m. In addition to the staff, more than 150 volunteers arrived on campus despite the rainy weather. Some of the largest groups of volunteers came from organizations such as Chi Alpha, the Chancellor鈥檚 Leadership Corps, and the university鈥檚 Greek community. Mark Harris, acting director of the Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship, brought several members of the organization to volunteer Saturday. While the rain kept some people away, the weather was not about to keep Harris from volunteering. 鈥淭he rain dampened a whole lot of response,鈥 Harris said. 鈥淎s a parent of two college students, I have been on the receiving end of that kind of help. When you bring a carload to a college campus, it sure is nice when there is a gang of people to help carry stuff to the dormitories.鈥 At lunchtime, Dr. Brad Patterson, vice provost for student affairs and dean of students, manned the grill, cooking hot dogs and hamburgers for the masses of hungry students and their families eating a free lunch at the Trojan Grill. 糖心Vlog传媒LR Dining Services provided the food for the cookout. 糖心Vlog传媒LR staff had an elevator maintenance person on site, who was quickly able to repair an elevator in North Hall, thus saving students, parents, and volunteers the hardship of many extra trips up the stairs. The 糖心Vlog传媒LR Department of Public Safety was also prepared with an extra 10 officers on duty. On social media, move-in day was a popular topic on Snapchat. A Snapchat geofilter created by a campus living staff member had more than 18,000 views on Aug. 13. Glidden named new director of campus living]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has named Marc Glidden its new director of campus living and assistant dean of students. 鈥淭his position plays a vital role in the student affairs team,鈥 Glidden said. 鈥淚 am grateful for the campus living staff as they have been through many changes within the past year. I believe that having a well-rounded staff that supports each other and remembers to keep our students at the heart of our policies and processes is the key to being successful.鈥 Glidden also thanked Rikki Turner, assistant vice provost for student affairs, and Dr. Brad Patterson, vice provost for student affairs, for the support he has received during his transition. In his new role, Glidden oversees the Office of Campus Living, including the Campus Living Leadership Team, and manages a budget of nearly $9 million. He plans to design and implement a strategic plan, which includes initiatives from resident learning outcomes to large scale facilities projects. 鈥淐ampus living strives to create a positive and meaningful experience for our residents,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e strive to integrate faculty and staff from outside of our office into the residence halls to bridge the gap between learning and living. I believe that 糖心Vlog传媒LR is a growing community of on-campus students and I am excited about the future of the Office of Campus Living here at 糖心Vlog传媒LR.鈥

The ability to work with students as they come in for orientation and watch them graduate four years later is the reason that Glidden enjoys working in student affairs, he said. In 2014, Glidden started at 糖心Vlog传媒LR as the assistant director of student housing, where he oversaw 鲍础尝搁鈥檚 University Village apartment complex. Prior to 糖心Vlog传媒LR, he served as a resident advisor at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and a residence hall director at McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice from East Carolina University and a Master of Arts in higher education administrative services from McKendree University. He is also pursuing a doctorate in criminal justice from 糖心Vlog传媒LR. Turner named assistant vice provost for student affairs /news-archive/2016/07/28/turner-named-assistant-vice-provost-student-affairs/ Thu, 28 Jul 2016 14:55:40 +0000 /news/?p=64796 ... Turner named assistant vice provost for student affairs]]> As someone who has spent the past decade working in student housing, Rikki Turner could write a book about the strange, late-night phone calls she receives in the middle of the night. Turner, the newly promoted assistant vice provost for student affairs – auxiliary services at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has heard it all. One of Turner鈥檚 most memorable experience is what she calls the 鈥淲hen Frisbees Attack!鈥 incident. An errant Frisbee thrown by a student in April set off the sprinklers, causing several floors of a men鈥檚 residence hall to flood. 鈥淚鈥檓 on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 never know what any day will be like. Nothing surprises me, but when you get called because someone threw a Frisbee, flooded three floors of West Hall, and you have to reassign all those students in the middle of the night, that鈥檚 something.鈥 After working as a residence coordinator at the University of Central Arkansas, Turner joined 糖心Vlog传媒LR as a hall director and student development specialist in 2008. She was promoted to assistant director for residence life in 2011 and interim executive director of student housing and associate dean of students in 2015. In her new position, Turner oversees the Campus Living Department, which includes the residence halls. She also has oversight of campus dining, Donaghey Student Center, recreational facilities, as well as the campus bookstore. She also serves as the senior budget officer for the Division of Student Affairs. 鈥淢oney usually scares people,鈥 Turner said. 鈥淗aving oversight over the budget, I get to ensure that we are being good stewards of the students鈥 money and creating a better experience for the student.鈥 Turner has many ideas to improve the student experience at 糖心Vlog传媒LR. She plans to explore adding family and Greek housing to campus, expanding campus dining options, and updating recreational facilities. The Division of Student Affairs is also conducting a feasibility study to identify areas of improvements for the university. 鈥淓verything that is under my purview has a direct impact on students,鈥 Turner said. 鈥淚 know when students live on campus, they are dramatically affected by that experience and much more likely to graduate. I like to affect the student experience in a positive way and make a direct impact in their lives.鈥 Turner earned a Bachelor of Science in speech communication and a Master of Science in college student personnel services and administration from the University of Central Arkansas. She is pursuing a doctorate in higher education administration from 糖心Vlog传媒LR. She and her husband, Justin, have a 6-year-old son, Samuel. ]]> Volunteers needed for 糖心Vlog传媒LR move-in day /news-archive/2016/07/19/volunteers-needed-for-ualr-move-in-day/ Tue, 19 Jul 2016 13:30:15 +0000 /news/?p=64759 ... The Office of Campus Living (formerly Student Housing) is seeking 糖心Vlog传媒LR student and employee volunteers to assist the 1,400 students who will move in that day. Marc Glidden, director of campus living, said it is important for students and parents to remain flexible during the move-in process. 鈥淲e have 1,400 students moving in on one day, so it can be confusing. If everyone can be flexible, parents can sit back and enjoy the experience of their students going to college,鈥 Glidden said. 鈥淚f you forget to buy something, there is no need to panic. There are plenty of stores nearby to get those last-minute items for your student.鈥 Check-in for students with last names A-L will be from 8 a.m. to noon, while students with last names M-Z can check in 1-5 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available outside the Trojan Grill.
