��Vlog��ý Little Rock Names Dorn as Chancellor’s Chief of Staff

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has named Alicia Dorn as the new chancellor’s chief of staff. Dorn, a native of Pine Bluff, serves as the primary liaison to the Office of the Chancellor and assists in areas of communication, planning and preparation, project management, and other administrative responsibilities. One of her first major projects will be to assist in the creation of the university’s new five-year strategic plan. “I am extremely happy and excited that I was chosen as the chancellor’s chief of staff, which means they trust that I am very qualified to assist the chancellor in her vision for the university,” Dorn said. “I’m so grateful to be a part of that. I’m looking forward to all that I will learn in this position and to contribute to the university community in a meaningful way.” Prior to joining ��Vlog��ý Little Rock, Dorn worked as the communications director in the School of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where she supervised a staff of five to manage all communication functions for the school. “I became interested in working in higher education because I know the impact that higher education had on my life as far as opening and expanding my mind and the wealth of opportunities that I wouldn’t have without higher education,” Dorn said. “I just want others to be able to experience that and know the power of furthering your education.” She also previously served as the communications director and part-time deputy for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “In order for me to be effective in my position and represent the sheriff’s office correctly, I felt I needed to understand from the deputy’s perspective, so I completed the part-time certification in conjunction with my full-time job as communications director.” Dorn earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication/broadcast journalism from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and a Master of Public Administration from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. She said she’s grateful for the opportunity to work for the alma mater that helped her so much. “I’m happy to be able to give back to the university that helped establish who I am today,” Dorn said. “They invested in me as a student. I get the chance to come back to a place that helped enhance my skills, abilities, and talents. It’s an honor to give back to the university that gave so much to me.”

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law will welcome on Monday, Sept. 26, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss her recently published book “.” The free event, which is part of Bowen’s Faculty Colloquium Speaker Series, is co-sponsored by the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Office of the Chancellor: DEI Fellow Initiatives and is open to the public. The book draws upon Henning’s 25 years of experience representing Black youth in Washington, D.C.’s juvenile courts. She investigates the correlation between policing and the juvenile justice system’s treatment of Black children and adolescents. Her research also examines the criminalization of Black adolescent play and sexuality, and of Black fashion, hair, and music. Henning, who received her J.D. from Yale and her LL.M from Georgetown Law, is a nationally recognized trainer and consultant on the intersection of race, adolescence, and policing. She is the Blume Professor of Law and director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at the Georgetown University Law Center. She first joined the Georgetown faculty in 1995 as a Stuart-Stiller Fellow in the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Clinics. After her fellowship, Henning joined the staff of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia where she continued to represent clients and helped organize a Juvenile Unit designed to meet the multi-disciplinary needs of children in the juvenile legal system. Professor Henning served as lead attorney for the Juvenile Unit from 1998 until she left the Public Defender Service to return to the Georgetown Law Center in 2001. Henning has trained state actors across the country on the nature and scope of racial bias and how it operates in the juvenile and criminal legal systems. Her workshops help stakeholders recognize their own biases and develop strategies to counter them and equip defenders to challenge racial injustice in their individual case advocacy and broader systemic reform efforts. Henning also worked closely with the McArthur Foundation’s Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network to develop a 41-volume Juvenile Training Immersion Program (JTIP), a national training curriculum for juvenile defenders. She now co-hosts, with the National Juvenile Defender Center (NJDC), an annual week-long JTIP summer academy for defenders. In 2019, she partnered with NJDC to launch Racial Justice for Youth: A Toolkit for Defenders, and again in 2020 to launch the Ambassadors for Racial Justice program, a year-long program for defenders committed to challenging racial inequities in the juvenile legal system. Henning has received several honors for her work, including the Juvenile Law Center’s Leadership Prize, the Robert E. Shepherd, Jr. Award for Excellence in Juvenile Defense from NJDC, the Shanara Gilbert Award from the American Association of Law Schools for her commitment to justice on behalf of children, selection to the American Law Institute (ALI), and appointment as an adviser to ALI’s Restatement on Children and the Law project. Bowen’s Faculty Colloquium Speaker Series is part of the law school’s ongoing commitment to the professional development of its faculty. The monthly series brings national scholars to the law school to discuss their cutting-edge research and latest publications that are having an impact on the law both nationally and internationally. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will celebrate the return of the campus community for the new school year with the popular BBQ @ Bailey event Friday, Oct. 14. The tailgating-style event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Bailey Alumni and Friends Center on the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock campus. Members of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock community can also look forward to a special announcement about the university with Chancellor Christina Drale and Dr. Danyell Crutchfield Cummings, president of the Alumni Board of Directors, on hand to help celebrate. “We have lots to celebrate in October, and we hope that there will be even more students on campus to join in the fun,” said Kristi Smith, senior director of alumni and development. “This is often the highlight of the fall semester, and this one will be the best one yet. The ��Vlog��ý Little Rock community will come together on Monday, June 20, to mark the university’s first celebration of Juneteenth. The celebration will provide ��Vlog��ý Little Rock students, employees, alumni, and friends with the opportunity to celebrate African American history and culture. The day will feature a Juneteenth historical reenactment and a Black-owned food truck festival as well as the release of a cookbook. “��Vlog��ý Little Rock is proud to hold our first annual celebration of Juneteenth,” Chancellor Christina Drale said. “With our diverse campus community, the celebration of this important holiday highlights our commitment to creating a culture of inclusion and belonging while remembering this important moment in our nation’s history.” June 19 is annually celebrated as Juneteenth, the oldest national commemoration of the ending of slavery in the country. The holiday originates from June 19, 1865, the day the last slaves in the country were freed in Galveston, Texas, at the end of the Civil War. “I am so happy we are celebrating Juneteenth,” said Dr. Melvin Beavers, Chancellor’s DEI Fellow and director of first-year writing. “It gives us the opportunity to educate and reflect on the nation’s history. Additionally, it gives all a chance to come together to discuss our shared goals for racial justice at our institution and within our communities.” The celebration begins with a “Taste of Juneteenth,” a Black-owned food truck festival from noon-2 p.m. The food truck festival will include Goldfingers Woodfired Pizza, Spud Love, Jefferson Mobile Grilling, and Cheesecake On Point. Food trucks will be located on Campus Drive. Faculty, staff, and students may pick up tickets for an entree and a dessert at a table next to the Campus Bookstore in the Donaghey Student Center starting at 11:30 a.m. As part of its inaugural Juneteenth celebration, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock will host a reenactment of historic Juneteenth events at 1 p.m. June 20 in the Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter Hall. S. Juain Young & Artists United is a multi-faceted, multi-talented, diverse performing arts group who has inspired and educated audiences across the state and country. They will perform a 20-minute Juneteenth reenactment in which enslaved Africans learn of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Following the reenactment, the audience will gather into small groups for discussion and reflection. An education table will be available outside Ledbetter Hall with fliers containing fascinating facts and reading recommendations. The Office of the Chancellor and the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Association are sponsoring the event. Speakers will include Chancellor Drale with opening remarks, Dr. Danyell Crutchfield Cummings, president of the Alumni Association, will introduce the reenactment, and Dr. Beaver with closing remarks. The celebration will also include the launch of a ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Juneteenth Celebration Cookbook that contains family recipes from ��Vlog��ý Little Rock students, employees, and alumni. The cookbook will be available for download on ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s diversity, equity, and inclusion website at a later date.

Brown Donation Creates First Chancellor’s Student Excellence Endowment at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock

Julie Brown, a longtime supporter of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock from De Queen, has created an endowment that provides Chancellor Christina Drale with the opportunity to support annual priorities that benefit students at the university. Brown, former president, chairman of the board, and owner of Southern LP Gas, has made a donation to establish the Julie Brown Chancellor’s Student Excellence Endowment. The donation, which promotes overall excellence and advancement of students at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock, is the first gift made to the university where the funds will be distributed at the discretion of the chancellor. The new endowment will make funds available for the chancellor of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock to invest in areas of greatest impact and directly support the student experience. Funds may be used to support student travel, research, campus living, lab and classroom enhancements, scholarships, and life circumstances at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock for generations to come. “This gift is not only incredibly generous, but it is unique in that it covers the full range of the student experience at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” Chancellor Drale said. “We can use it to support high impact learning experiences, improvements to the living and learning environment, and also for scholarships and emergency funds to reduce barriers to opportunity. With this endowment, we can truly focus on areas of greatest need and the greatest impact at any given time. I am deeply grateful for this investment in student success at our institution.” A 1993 graduate of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock with a bachelor’s degree in history, Brown has a long history of giving back to the university. In 2016, she created an endowed scholarship in memory of her grandmother, Lou Ellen Gray, that provides scholarships to students from Sevier County. She also supported an emergency student fund in honor of James Hendren, the former CEO and chairman of Euronet, that was created to help students in need at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I truly believe in the transformative power of higher education,” Brown said. “Everyone should have the opportunity to get an education and achieve their goals in life. I was lucky enough to attend ��Vlog��ý Little Rock without financial difficulty, but I know that not every person is that lucky. This is an opportunity for me to pay it forward to help more students get ahead in life by completing their education.”

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will kick off its inaugural Inclusive and Inspiring Speaker Series with best-selling author Heather McGhee Wednesday, April 13. The virtual conversation, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. McGhee, a political commentator and racial justice advocate, will discuss her award-winning book, “The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together.” McGhee is a New York Times bestselling author and recipient of the National Book Award and Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. Her book, “The Sum of Us,” was on the Washington Post and TIME magazine must-read list in 2021. “The Inclusive and Inspiring Speaker Series is intended to be an annual opportunity for our campus community to hear from a variety of voices on subjects that advance our understanding around issues of national and global importance,” said Chancellor Christina Drale. Dr. Melvin Beavers, the chancellor’s inaugural DEI fellow, and Lauren Wilson, assistant director of the Multicultural Center, will join McGhee in a discussion about her book, work as an educator, and research on the racial and socioeconomic factors that drive systemic inequality. “We are looking forward to hosting Heather McGhee” Dr. Beavers said. “Her book is a must read for anyone interested in furthering the conversation around social justice issues because she primarily focuses on how systemic racism impacts everyone negatively.” McGhee is a visiting lecturer in urban studies at the City University of New York’s School of Labor and Urban Studies. BBQ at Bailey Celebrates ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Alumni Support and Fellowship

BBQ at Bailey returned to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock for their 14th annual gathering inviting faculty, students, and graduates to the Bailey Alumni and Friends Center on Oct. 12. Participants ate a delicious lunch catered by Whole Hog Café, followed by dessert from Community Bakery. “We didn’t get the chance to do it last year, so the goal is to welcome back people to the campus, get students to come out, get to know everyone in the alumni center, and get to know other graduates,” said Derrick Newby, associate director for alumni membership and engagement. “Typically, we do this at the beginning of the year but we had to push it back to make sure everyone was safe.” The enjoyment for the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock fellowship was a constant trend in conversations at the BBQ. “It is so great to see everyone back together for BBQ at Bailey to see all the students, teachers and alumni all coming together to rally around this amazing school,” said Heide Harrell (‘10), executive committee member of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Board of Directors. “Who doesn’t love some free BBQ on a beautiful October day?” Harrell has a deep passion for the work that the faculty provides and the caliber of students who work hard to get their degrees. “I am a proud graduate and advocate for this university,” said Harrell. Kristi Smith, director of alumni and development, indicated the importance of joining the Alumni Association because a portion of proceeds from memberships go towards student scholarships.

The BBQ highlights support for the Alumni Association, which annually offers around $100,000 in student scholarships, in addition to helping people create connections. During the BBQ, the Alumni Association recruited numerous new members. “This event is important to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock because it’s a great time for everyone to come together,” said Smith. “We work in different areas and rarely get to see people due to the pandemic. Now that everyone is back on campus, this is a great unifying event.” The favored fall event gathered around 1,200 people. “We get student athletes to help; we get faculty and staff involved, and it’s great,” said Smith. Career Services and other campus organizations attended the event to participate and raise awareness. “We are promoting the Trojan Career Closet available for all students at the university,” said Shannon Gwinn (98’), director of career services for the College of Business, Health, and Human Services. “We want to make them aware of the fabulous items that they can come shop for. Whether you are going to a job interview and need a suit or need an outfit for an internship, we can help.” The career closet has suits, sport coats, dresses, accessories, and plenty of ties. Students can select five items per year. It can be found on the first floor of the Reynolds Building.

After including it in their annual National Pan-Hellenic Council week of activities, several Greek groups participated in the luncheon. “This event went well since it was my first time attending,” said Kenyon Clay, sophomore criminal justice and music major and Kappa Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. president. “This gave me motivation to finish college so I can come back and experience being an alumni. We added BBQ at Bailey to the event list because we believe NPHC should be more involved in campus events. We are here to show our support for them and hopefully gain support back.” NPHC not only enjoyed the food but also the music as they simultaneously strolled to many songs played. “The event today had a great turn out, good food, and great laughs,” said Kevin Davidson, senior mechanical engineering technology major and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. “It was a good time to connect with friends and alumni. I know this will be an event that I will come back to as a future alumni.” People can help ��Vlog��ý Little Rock by joining the Alumni Association, contributing to annual fundraisers, making a donation, or putting the university in their estate plans, in addition to investing for their own financial goals. The Office of Alumni and Development is happy to accept donations. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Names Ganz as New Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has selected Gerald “Jerry” Ganz Jr. as the university’s new vice chancellor of finance and administration, effective Aug. 23. “Jerry will be a tremendous asset to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” Chancellor Christina Drale said. “His many years of experience in finance, his previous work at institutions of higher education, and his friendly, accessible communication style, all combine to make for a great fit with our institution. I am very pleased to have him joining our Trojan family.” In his new role, Ganz will serve as the university’s chief financial officer and is responsible for the university’s budget and financial services. Additionally, he will oversee the departments of facilities management, public safety, information technology, mail services, and printing services. �� Ganz will join ��Vlog��ý Little Rock from the University of Connecticut Foundation, where he served as senior vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer since 2015. He managed the foundation’s assets that totaled nearly $620 million and oversaw the accounting, investment, accounts payable, information technology, human resources, and facilities departments.�� A native of Waverly, Pennsylvania, Ganz said he is excited to join the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock family during a pivotal time in higher education. “There are numerous challenges in the industry, which have only been exacerbated by the pandemic. I look forward to addressing those and future challenges with the great team at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock in order to provide the very best educational experience for the students attending the university,” he said. “To do so, we must be creative, flexible, and innovative in our approach, while balancing progress with fiscal responsibility. I look forward to working with every one of the hard-working employees in the Finance and Administration division and across the university to continue to advance the mission of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock.” Ganz has a long history of running the financial side at institutions of higher education. He has served as the chief financial officer at the Florida State University Foundation, controller at Eckerd College, and chief financial officer at Johnson College. He also worked a number of years as a controller, field auditor, and senior accountant in the private industry. Ganz has served as a member of the Investment Advisory Board for the UConn School of Business Student Managed Fund and the National Committee for College and University Foundations. He is also a volunteer for numerous youth sports programs in Abington, Pennsylvania, and Ellington, Connecticut. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Connecticut Society of CPAs, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, National Association of College and University Business Officers, University Foundational Financial Officers, and Northeast Foundation Financial Officers. Ganz is a certified public accountant and a chartered global management accountant. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from Florida State University. Ganz and his wife Elena are the proud parents of four children, Dustin, Isabella, C.J., and Olivia.
