Graduating student tackles two career fields]]> Rashad Roberts, a political science major from Osceola, Arkansas, lost his mother to cancer during one of the most pivotal points of his life. He was a senior in high school, contemplating whether he would serve in the U.S. Army or obtain a college degree. 鈥淢y mother鈥檚 death produced an intense amount of pressure on me to make the right decisions for myself,鈥 Roberts said. In 2013, Roberts decided to pursue an education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. As an undergraduate, he served as an ambassador in the Chancellor鈥檚 Leadership Corps. program and a resident assistant for Campus Living. 鈥淩ashad can be described as a strong leader, determined, hardworking, and a role model to many people across campus,鈥 said Amber Wolf, scholarship coordinator of the CLC program. Despite Roberts鈥 initial decision to attend school instead of enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces, he ultimately wound up with a foot on both paths. After completing his first year at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Roberts enlisted in the U.S. Army as a means to establish himself financially while in school. 聽 鈥淏alancing these two beasts was so difficult,鈥 Roberts said. 鈥淚 had setbacks in completing my degree in a timely manner due to multiple military assignments and periods of academic suffering.鈥 Although he often found himself staring at the face of adversity, Roberts made it his mission to emerge from his circumstances triumphant. He was fortunate to have friends and family to encourage and support him along the way. Robert says that his membership with the Kappa Psi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., his two best friends, Ashton McFarland and Quaylon Estell, and his biggest supporter, Kalan Horton, who was a mentor and a fellow fraternity brother, all gave him the tools he needed to help him stay focused and occupied as a student. “Since I began working with Rashad in the African American Male Initiative mentorship program and the Brother’s Keeper student organization, he has been nothing short of exemplary in character,鈥 said Horton, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock alumnus and Charles W. Donaldson Academies project manager. 鈥淟eadership came naturally to him. His strong sense of duty and obligation, coupled with a high intellect set him apart from his peers and he has seen high rates of success in his endeavors as a result. From college freshman, to military man, to political analyst, to Alpha Man, to college graduate, it has been my esteemed honor to support and aid him on this journey.” Roberts鈥 journey was not only propelled by loved ones, but also by Dr. Rebecca Glazier, assistant professor of political science. Roberts believes that Glazier is responsible for his college success because she introduced him to different spectrums of thought, which allowed him to flourish not only as a student, but as an individual as well. 聽 Despite the overwhelming amount of support from peers and professors, it was Roberts鈥 self-motivation that provided the energy and mindset he needed to persevere. 鈥淢y desire to give young black boys and girls from my hometown something to look up to is something that drove me to stick things out even when it seemed like it would never happen,鈥 he said. After Roberts takes his final steps across the stage as a student of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, he plans to pursue a military career while continuing his education in the areas of public service. 鈥淚鈥檝e gained a better understanding of government and politics while studying at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ver the course of my four years here, I鈥檝e developed an intense passion for the matters of race and humanity, and I will continue to exert those desires into my profession.鈥 Roberts will receive a bachelor鈥檚 degree in political science during the Fall 2017 commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 16, in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Jack Stephens Center.  ]]> Alumni Success Story: College of Business graduate becomes first-time author /news-archive/2017/10/17/alumni-success-story-college-business-graduate-becomes-first-time-author/ Tue, 17 Oct 2017 17:57:03 +0000 /news/?p=68267 ... Alumni Success Story: College of Business graduate becomes first-time author]]> While living in a world surrounded by chaos and stress, KenDrell Collins, a University of Arkansas at Little Rock College of Business graduate, made it his mission to find peace and serenity in every adventure or encounter he experienced to help ease his mind and reinforce his purpose. Collins, a native of Osceola, Arkansas, grew up as a country boy with dreams big enough to fill the Mississippi River. As a young man, he had aspirations of becoming the president of the United States, the governor of Arkansas, and the CEO of a company. Before he could obtain any of those positions, Collins took a detour and decided first to become an author.

Journey to publication

鈥淏e Steady, My Soul: Daily Practices for Peace and Positivity鈥 was written, edited, and published by Collins in just eight months. Although the idea of the book started as a Facebook suggestion, it quickly transformed into a life-changing narrative. 鈥淚t was December of 2016,鈥 Collins said. 鈥淚 would always post quotes and inspirational stuff on Facebook and people would suggest that I write a book. Ironically, during this time I was overcoming all the emotional impacts of law school and wanted to write something I could turn to for encouragement.鈥 As a law student at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Collins witnessed his peers turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with strenuous academic demands. Instead of following suit, Collins drew inspiration from the experiences around him and outlined them on the Microsoft Word pages of his laptop. Almost every evening after an intense study session, Collins would make his way to a nearby cafe, Starbucks, or Panera Bread to put his thoughts on paper. 鈥淓ach chapter embodied a personal hurdle that I was overcoming,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 figured I couldn’t be the only person who had or would struggle with these things. My hope was that by sharing what worked for me, someone else would also be strengthened.鈥

“Be Steady, My Soul”

According to Collins, the book addresses 40 aspects of the human character that need tending to. By using personal experiences, Collins expresses ways in which a person can cultivate more peace through patience, humility, self-gratification, and more.

My favorite chapter is probably 鈥楤e Patient with You,鈥欌 Collins said. 鈥淚 think the biggest challenge for my generation is that we are so accustomed to getting everything instantly. When it comes to building a life, things don’t happen instantly. We get frustrated and find ourselves in a quarter-life crisis because our life isn’t as perfect as we expected it to be at that moment. I battled with that and had to learn to be more patient with my own growth and not compare my rate of development with the next person’s.鈥 After five months of writing, Collins took two months to analyze and reassemble his work.KenDrell Collin's novel, "Be Steady My Soul" 鈥淭he process of editing and improving the writing was the biggest challenge,鈥 he explained. 鈥淵ou read the same chapter 10 times, and you find better ways of saying something. Then, you wake up and re-read it, and it sounds worse.鈥 In addition to writing, Collins also worked on constructing the perfect title and cover art for the book that would exemplify its intended message. 鈥淥riginally, the title was 鈥楤e Still, My Soul,鈥 he said. 鈥淗owever, when I googled that phrase, there was a massive list of songs and books with the same title, so I realized I had to change it. 鈥淎s I was searching for the artwork, I wanted to find a picture that would demonstrate balance. From the front of the book, the rocks, which represent strength, look like they鈥檙e about to fall, but when you flip the book over, you realize that they鈥檙e perfectly steady. That鈥檚 when I figured, 鈥榃hy not replace 鈥榮till鈥 with 鈥榮teady,鈥欌 he said. Once he finalized the title and art for the book, Collins spent a month figuring out the self-publishing process. Soon after he mastered the method, the 24-year-old鈥檚 first publication was born. 鈥淭he most rewarding feeling of publishing a book is hearing someone say that they read the book and decided to buy copies for their friend or a family member,鈥 Collins said. 鈥淭hat means a lot to me because that’s like going viral in real life.鈥

The final chapter

As he finishes his final year of law school, Collins plans to continue writing, publishing, and even helping others to publish their own work. 鈥淲riting is in my DNA,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 want my books to become Amazon and New York Times best sellers and be in bookstores around the world.鈥 In addition to writing, Collins still looks forward to fulfilling his original plans for the future. As a lover of the South, he plans to stay in Arkansas, start his own firm or business, and travel the world. 鈥淭he fact that my dream came true shows me that we can have just about whatever we want in life, if we really want it,鈥 Collins said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to sit around and wait for someone to give us permission to do what we feel called to do. It removes a lot of the fear and hesitation. I actually believe anything is possible now.鈥 Collins鈥 novel, 鈥淏e Steady, My Soul,鈥 is .  ]]>
