New Birthing Manikin Provides Lifelike Training for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Nursing Students]]> The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock School of Nursing is now home to the Lucina AR Childbirth Simulator, which provides simulation experiences for all stages of delivery and rare emergency scenarios with incorporation of augmented and virtual reality components. Lucina is funded in part by a grant from the . 鈥淪he is the most state-of-the-art birthing manikin in the world,鈥 said Joanna Hall, director of the Center for Simulation Innovation. 鈥淟ucina feels and looks more real and helps increase the realness of the simulations for our students. She also comes with virtual and augmented reality features that bring more learning capabilities to our training simulations.鈥 Lucina gives birth to her baby multiple times a day to give nursing students a first-hand look at deliveries and the emergency situations that can arise, such as preeclampsia-induced seizures, a breech birth, and fetal shoulder dystocia. In addition, Lucina鈥檚 baby can also be used in training scenarios involving newborns to six-month-old babies. 鈥淲e work hard to prepare our students for the workforce from the jump,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淲e put out exceptionally qualified nursing students who are prepared to pass their licensure exams and be safe, skilled nurses who can take care of the people in our community.鈥 Johni Beth Teague, an assistant professor of nursing and simulation faculty member, said the addition of Lucina has moved the simulation experience to the next level for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock nursing students. 鈥淭his manikin is the highest fidelity manikin on the market. We utilize her for four different simulations throughout the day,鈥 Teague said. 鈥淪he not only provides a realistic birth experience, but she also can provide realistic complications from labor and the prepartum and postpartum period. The ability for her to also offer virtual and augmented reality takes the student’s experience down to the pathophysiological level to help them understand what is going on from a cellular level. Lucina functions on her own server, which allows for uninterrupted simulations due to technology glitches or server overload while other scenarios are running.鈥 Students can get an inside look at the health situation using Lucina鈥檚 virtual and augmented reality features, which provides a 360-degree, holographic view of labor. Students can put on glasses that will allow them to see what contractions look like as they are happening in real time. In addition to seeing what is happening inside of the manikin, the virtual reality feature allows students to experience completely immersive virtual simulations. 鈥淭he virtual reality component has a lot of potential in training simulations,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淥nce you put the goggles on, the experience is completely virtual. You feel like you can touch it, but it鈥檚 all playing out like a virtual reality game right in front of you. We can take those goggles anywhere, so there is a lot of potential going forward to help prepare our nursing students and to educate people working in the healthcare industry.鈥 Sylvia Shaw, a nursing student from Oklahoma City, said the realistic simulation is something she鈥檚 never experienced prior to using Lucina. 鈥淭his simulation helps prepare you for your nursing career because it gives you the most realistic version of what happens to the body in certain situations,鈥 Shaw said. 鈥淚t also is able to explain things in detail and show specific organs associated with the disease process. Being able to experience that enhances your understanding and knowledge beyond what can be comprehended from reading a textbook. That kind of experience is something you could never get with just a regular sim manikin.鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is home to the second largest associate degree program in nursing in the state. Approximately 300 new students begin every summer, and every one of them learns necessary skills for transition to nursing practice in the Center for Simulation Innovation. 鈥淲e have a fully functioning simulation hospital in the Pat Walker Center for Nursing Education Building,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淲e run simulations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. five days a week in order to get all of our students through their simulations and get the hands-on experiences they need to learn new skills and graduate.鈥 The Center for Simulation Innovation also provides a reliable alternative for nursing students who need to complete their training when clinical spots are not available. 鈥淒uring COVID, a lot of healthcare facilities closed their doors to students to protect their patients,鈥 Hall said. 鈥淭here were a lot of clinical practice gaps, and we did a lot of virtual clinics and simulations to get our students prepared for the workforce. That is one of the many benefits to a program like ours. While we have great relationships with hospitals and healthcare facilities in central Arkansas, we still plan to use more simulations and implement more simulation experiences for our nursing students going forward.鈥漖]> 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock celebrates half a century of more than 4,100 registered nurses /news-archive/2020/05/08/50-years-nursing/ Fri, 08 May 2020 13:04:10 +0000 /news/?p=76836 ... 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock celebrates half a century of more than 4,100 registered nurses]]> Countless nurses leveraged their hard work and success to serve in nearby hospitals, medical centers, offices or small practices, said Ann Bain, provost and executive vice chancellor at the university. Bain is a former nurse herself who, at various points, has been a faculty member of, then chair of the Department of Nursing, and dean of the College of Education and Health Professions. That sense of community service from a city university is what the administrators and chiefs at what was then St. Vincent Infirmary intended when they helped 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock begin its nursing program in the late 1960s. By 1970, the year it was accredited, the program enrolled about 45 students and maintained a lean staff of two faculty and a director. This May, 350 students will begin journeys toward ASNs, joining 330 currently enrolled and another 250 BSN candidates. The investment made more than half a century ago has accrued to the benefit of both landmark institutions. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock has been a vital source of nurses that has helped CHI St. Vincent to continue to deliver exceptional health care to the state of Arkansas. The training and preparation of the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock program helps the nurses acclimate quickly to the care environment,鈥 said , CHI St. Vincent鈥檚 senior vice president and chief nurse executive.

Practice, Perfect

Bain was one of the chief creative forces behind the program鈥檚 Interdisciplinary Health Education Center (SCIHEC), an innovative health care simulation facility located on the ground floor of the Pat Walker Center for Nursing Education building on campus. The 3,800-square-foot facility features a 20-bed simulation hospital unit. There, students can train for real-world events from anaphylactic shock to cardiac arrest to mental illness. The scenarios are brought to life by paid actors (sometimes in the role of family or other caregivers). Students are coached by faculty, sometimes over speaker, and granted the benefit of hindsight with a video recording. 鈥淲e bring that fidelity to the simulation classroom,鈥 said Sloan Davidson, chair of the School of Nursing at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淪tudents have an opportunity to experience what it’s like to operate as the RN in a scenario. This is not the case in the hospital鈥 鈥 or not without liabilities. The simulation unit has been a boon to recruitment, and an assurance to area hospitals who know 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock-trained nurses have hours of simulated, real-world experience, Bain said. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock taught me the personal and professional skills I鈥檝e needed as a nurse,鈥 said Mike Stramiello, BSN, RN, currently serving as a nurse at Saline Memorial Hospital. 鈥淭he unique environment cultivated a depth of understanding and hands-on experience that has enabled me to care for my patients and give back to my community.”
