I couldn鈥檛 celebrate my graduation last year because of COVID but I鈥檓 celebrating now.鈥 Having started her college education at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock in 2004, Hair said she had exhausted financial aid options and had been paying for her education while working full-time at the university for years. Hair is one of five 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock staff members who received the Staff Senate Scholarship in 2020, and the money helped pay for her final semester of college at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. However, it was one final act of kindness that got her over the home stretch. 鈥溙切腣log传媒 Little Rock has been a great help during this time,鈥 Hair said. 鈥淒r. April Chatham-Carpenter and Steve McClellan, God rest his soul, gave me the last $1,500 I needed to finish. That鈥檚 the reason I was able to get my degree.鈥

The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Staff Senate celebrated the achievements of Hair and other staff members during a Staff Senate Award Recognition event on April 30. The event recognized staff members who won Staff Achievement Awards, received scholarships, completed an educational achievement, and were celebrating work anniversaries and retirement in 2020 and 2021.听 Mary Tillman, administrative support manager for MidSouth, said 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 atmosphere has been an inspiration during her career. 鈥淭here is nothing like the atmosphere of what happens when you are surrounded by all these educational opportunities,鈥 Tillman said. 鈥淭hat is what has kept me here for 15 years.鈥 Joan Reed, higher education institute program coordinator for the School of Nursing, is celebrating her 20th anniversary at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淭ime flies when you are having fun,鈥 Reed said. 鈥淭here have been a lot of changes at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock over the past two decades. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock has a lot to offer. What has really helped me is participating in the fitness classes we offer.鈥

Tina Medlock, director of communications at William H. Bowen School of Law as well as this year’s recipient of the Staff Achievement Award for Personal Growth, has enjoyed learning new skills and building camaraderie with her colleagues at the law school. 鈥淚 have so much fun working with people at Bowen and getting to learn new things that it doesn鈥檛 even feel like work,鈥 Medlock said. We want to help our students cover the cost of their cap, gown, and tassel this year so they can commemorate this milestone properly.鈥 The cost of a cap and gown for an undergraduate student is $55.57 and $100.26 for a graduate student. The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Office of Alumni and Development is putting $1,000 from the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Annual Fund to aid in this effort. Anyone who would like to make a donation can visit the Cap and Gown Support webpage. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock employees can also make a donation through a one-time payroll deduction, which counts as a contribution to the All In Campus Campaign. Faculty and staff can for students who need cap and gown assistance to the CARE Team. The creation of the Cap and Gown Support Fund stemmed from an email from Janet Davis, finance director, who said she was disheartened after learning of students who could not afford to purchase a cap and gown for commencement.听听 “When I learned of the plight of a student who was cancelling their commencement appointment solely for financial reasons, I realized that there had to be others in the same situation that, as a campus, we are unaware of their reason for not attending commencement,鈥 Davis said. 鈥淭his truly weighed on my mind, knowing that we are a campus mixed with traditional, non-traditional, and first generation college students.” Davis said she received many emails from faculty and staff who offered to buy a cap and gown for the students in need, and that the creation of the fund reinforces her belief that the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock community loves its students from start to finish. The first Giving Day in 2018 had 131 donors, while more than 330 people donated to this year鈥檚 event. The generous matching gift from Julie Brown generated much excitement leading up to the day.鈥 Jessie Burchfield, associate dean for the information and technology services and director of the Law Library at William H. Bowen School of Law, also provided a $1,000 match for any donation on Giving Day. As a graduate of the Donaghey Scholars Honors Program and a first-generation college student, Burchfield knows how important scholarships can be for students to succeed. It touches our alumni community in particular. They want to give students the same opportunity they had to complete their college education.鈥 One of the fund鈥檚 donors, Julie Brown, a 1993 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock graduate from De Queen, Arkansas, said she was moved to give $13,000 after realizing what a difference it can make for the students. 鈥淓ver since I graduated from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, I鈥檝e wanted to help other students succeed,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淚 know how important a college education can be to a person鈥檚 future, and my heart breaks for all the students who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. I know a lot of students have suddenly lost their jobs and are facing basic need insecurities, such as the ability to purchase groceries or rent. When I saw 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock had started a fund for these students, I wanted to help right away to ensure they get the support they need.鈥澨 One student who can benefit from the fund is Mariam Bouzihay, a senior psychology major who is graduating this semester. Shortly after moving home to Jonesboro, Bouzihay鈥檚 family home was damaged in the tornado that struck the town on March 28.

鈥淪ome people in the neighborhood lost their houses completely, so we were lucky,鈥 Bouzihay said. 鈥淗uge parts of our roof were blown away. The carport is gone. We have a food truck in the back of our yard that just landed there, and we don鈥檛 know who it belongs to. The response from first responders and all the people who came from out of town to help the people of Jonesboro was really nice to see.鈥 Fortunately, Bouzihay and her family were uninjured, but she now faces an unexpected financial difficulty, but is grateful for the support from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very confusing time,鈥 Bouzihay said. 鈥淪o many people have lost their jobs, and we have all transitioned to classes online. A lot of students need support. I want our students to know that there are people here to help them. During this time, it鈥檚 about being there for people. We are a Trojan family, and look what our family, friends, and supporters have accomplished. When you have people who support and care for each other, it鈥檚 amazing what can be achieved.鈥 Students who would like to apply for a micro-grant may fill out a, and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock employees may refer a student. Donations can be made by visiting , calling 501-683-7208, or texting GivingDay2020 to 41444. 鈥淎t 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, the education, health, and well-being of our students and community is our top priority,鈥 said Samantha Wiley, assistant director of development. 鈥淲hile the university has transitioned to holding classes online, our commitment to offer world-class education to our students remains the same.鈥 An anonymous donor has pledged to match $5,000 to support the greatest needs of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students through micro grants to help students dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since college athletics have been canceled for the spring semester due to Covid-19, Trojan fans who want to show their support for student-athletes can donate toward a specially identified project for each sport meant to help move the program forward. The Greg and Marilyn Brown Academic Success Center will also be featured to help our student-athletes compete for championships in the classroom as well as on the field of play. The projects include:

Faculty and staff lead in giving to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> Faculty and staff at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock have once again surpassed the national average for faculty and staff giving with the 2018 ALL IN Campus Campaign. Last year, more than 700 faculty and staff members – 46 percent of all employees – contributed to the campaign. Faculty and staff giving is important to the university鈥檚 overall fundraising efforts because foundations and corporations look for a high percentage of employee giving when making funding decisions. The national average for faculty and staff giving is 25 percent. 鈥淭he level of support received from our faculty and staff members inspires,鈥 said Christian O鈥橬eal, vice chancellor for university advancement. 鈥淚 cannot express how grateful I am to serve with faculty and staff members who show their support.鈥 With the Campus Campaign, the emphasis is on participation rather than dollar amounts. 鈥淓ach gift, whether $1 or $1,000, is truly significant,鈥 said Samantha Wiley, director of annual giving. Funds raised through the annual Campus Campaign provide funding for programs, department and scholarships. 鈥淎s a faculty member and parent of a 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock alum, I鈥檝e witnessed the impact first-hand that these scholarships can have on a student鈥檚 success,鈥 said Tom Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design and a Campus Campaign steering committee member. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important that we commit to the university as we ask others to do so.鈥 Aresh Assadi, another member of the Campus Campaign steering committee, said the level of faculty and staff participation is a point of pride for the university. 鈥淎s a first-generation student who has benefited immensely from receiving a college education, I am happy to be a part of this steering committee,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 believe that we are raising money for a great cause, and it has been incredibly heartwarming to witness the commitment that our faculty and staff have for our students. The internal giving rate at this campus is much higher than most.鈥 Recurring payroll deductions increased by 2 percent in 2018 over 2017. Additionally, the Office of Alumni and Development received several new planned giving commitments which will benefit students in perpetuity. Campus Departments with 100 percent participation in the campaign received commemorative 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock water bottles provided by the alumni association. They are as follows: Alumni and Development, Budget Office, Business Micro Computer Lab, College of Education and Health Professions Advising and Support Center, College of Arts Letters and Sciences Dean鈥檚 Office, College of Engineering and Information Technology Dean鈥檚 Office, Jodie Mahony Center for Gifted Education, Mail Services, Office of Military Student Success, Office of Title IX, Study Abroad, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock STEM Center, and University Affairs.
