Sculpture by late artist Mac Hornecker installed at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is now home to a sculpture by late artist.听 Marie Hornecker of Arkadelphia donated the sculpture to 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock last year to honor her husband鈥檚 creative efforts. Mac Hornecker, who passed away in 2011, created 鈥淓l 狈颈帽辞鈥 in 1998. It is a non-objective sculpture that was an early piece in his waved linear steel and concrete stone work. 鈥淓l 狈颈帽辞 was built in 1998 at a time when our oldest daughter was in college at OU in Oklahoma majoring in meteorology and also had a position at NOAA鈥檚 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Severe Storm Center and as a storm chaser,鈥 Marie Hornecker said. 鈥淚t gave Mac a new awareness of the weather and patterns. The land and natural elements were always the inspirations of Mac鈥檚 work.鈥 Marie Hornecker and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock installation crew members Michael Warrick, Kerrick Hartman, John Bruhl, Ricky Sikes, and Ruijie Zheng dismantled, packed, and reinstalled the sculpture at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus on Oct. 19. Marie Hornecker and Warrick gave the sculpture a fresh coat of paint on Oct. 20 to give it a 鈥渇inal finish,鈥 according to Warrick, a longtime friend of the Horneckers. The sculpture now stands east of the Donaghey Student Center near Coleman Creek. 鈥淭hanks for everyone at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for placing 鈥楨l 狈颈帽辞鈥 on your campus,鈥 Marie Hornecker said. 鈥淚t is a wonderful setting, and I know Mac would have been very pleased. I also want to thank Michael Warrick and those in the art faculty that helped with the instillation and 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock for accepting this piece and putting it in a beautiful location.鈥

Mac Hornecker was best known for sculptures of environmental scale built from a variety of materials. He designed for a particular site, which determines scale and material. Images within his work deal with land and manmade forms. He was interested in the topography, rocks, trees, architecture, and anything interesting about the environment of the site. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1968 and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Oklahoma in 1970. He received his first commission from the Oklahoma City Arts Council in 1971 for a 12-ton cast concrete sculpture. His work was represented in more than 30 public collections, 25 solo shows, 50 group shows, 25 invitationals, and 30 competitive shows. He was a professor of sculpture for 40 years and served as a guest artist and conducted workshops at many colleges, universities, and art centers. Windgate Center of Art and Design installs first artwork in outdoor sculpture garden]]> Visitors to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock鈥檚 Windgate Center of Art and Design will now see art before they even enter the doors. A 7-foot-tall wooden sculpture by Arkansas artist was installed this week on the center鈥檚 plaza entry as the first in the center鈥檚 Sculpture Garden. On Thursday, Oct. 4, more than 100 patrons gathered at the Windgate Center to celebrate the new artwork and to honor Horn, whose longtime support for art and education was instrumental in the creation of the Windgate Center of Art and Design. Horn鈥檚 sculpture, purchased by the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Foundation, is a redwood and dye creation titled 鈥淗ypothetical Destination鈥 – a phrase borrowed from lyrics in the James Taylor song 鈥淲alking Man.鈥 (Horn is a huge James Taylor fan.) 鈥淢oving in silent desperation Keeping an eye on the holy land A hypothetical destination Say, who is this walking man?鈥 The sculpture is one of the works from Horn鈥檚 Slipping Stone Series, a recurring theme throughout her career. 鈥淚t is a wonderful inaugural piece for our forthcoming sculpture garden in this plaza,鈥 said Tom Clifton, chair of the Department of Art and Design. 鈥淭he sense of motion created by the slipping stones is aligned perfectly to the forward momentum of the Windgate Center of Art and Design, and it鈥檚 an honor for all of us fortunate enough to be part of this time in the history of the department.鈥 Horn, who has been wood sculptor for more than 30 years, is known nationally for her sculptures and paintings. Her work has been exhibited and included in public collections across the country, including at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. A collection of Horn鈥檚 sculptures is also on display inside the Brad Cushman Gallery through the weekend. 聽In the top right photo,聽party guests toast sculptor Robyn Horn during a reception celebrating Horn’s work and the installation of a new art piece in front of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock’s Windgate Center of Art and Design. A reception for the exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14. Michael Warrick, professor of sculpture at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, created a sculpture entitled, 鈥淵outh,鈥 during 2016 and 2017. Little Rock officials recently sent the sculpture to South Korea. 鈥淵outh鈥 will be dedicated in December and stand in Hanam鈥檚 Sister City Park, which will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sister City partnership that began in 1992. The sculpture is a 7-foot figurative female sculpture cast in bronze and composed of vines, leaves, and a small bird, Warrick said. The figure has a traditional green finish, while the small bird is coated with 23.75 karat gold leaf. The 鈥淐reating Youth鈥 exhibit is meant to capture the 鈥渃omplexity and energy that goes into the idea of creating the sculpture,鈥 Warrick said. The exhibit will feature smaller bronze sculptures of 鈥淵outh,鈥 early sketches, 3-D digital renderings, test castings, failures, and a full-scale casting of the final sculpture. The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Art Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
