Doors open at 5:30 p.m., while the event will begin at 6 p.m. in Donaghey Student Center Ledbetter Hall. It will feature a community fair of organizations and agencies who provide services, resources, and advocate for victims of sexual assault and human trafficking. Speakers will include representatives from Arkansas Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ACASA) and survivors of sexual assault as well as a performance by singer Tara Riley of the band Moxie. The event will conclude with a candlelit vigil and march across campus to show support for those affected by sexual violence beginning at 8 p.m. 鈥淎pril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so we are holding this educational event to bring awareness of sexual assault to our students and our community,鈥 said Dr. Tusty ten Bensel, graduate coordinator in the Department of Criminal Justice and the event鈥檚 organizer. One in four women and one in six to eight men will experience sexual violence in their lifetimes. The event will end at 8 p.m. with a candlelit vigil and march across campus to show support for those affected by sexual violence. 鈥淎pril is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so we are partnering with PATH () to hold this educational fundraising event to bring awareness of sexual assault to our students and our community,鈥 said Dr. Tusty ten Bensel, graduate coordinator in the Department of Criminal Justice. The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Department of Criminal Justice is working with PATH, which provides housing, transportation, education, counseling, and additional resources for human trafficking victims. Proceeds from the event will help victims of sexual trafficking in Arkansas and student development scholarships for criminal justice students. Helping victims of sexual assault is very dear to my heart,鈥 ten Bensel said. 鈥淭here has been a huge call across the nation to prevent sexual assault on college campuses and in our communities. 鈥淚 want people to know that if something like this happens to you or someone you know, you should seek help. I think victims often feel so stigmatized that they don鈥檛 reach out for assistance. The more we avoid talking about sexual assault happening in our communities, the less likely we are to prevent it from happening in the future. Cara Brookins to give keynote address for Sexual Assault Awareness Month]]> Cara Brookins, best known as the mom who built her own house using YouTube tutorials, will share her inspiring story Thursday, April 5, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.聽 The 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock alumna will deliver her keynote speech for Sexual Assault Awareness Month at 6 p.m., followed by a book signing at 7:15 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Building. Brookins, a domestic abuse survivor, is an acclaimed speaker whose courage and passion to build a home for her children watching YouTube videos sparked the interest of a nation. In her speech, she will recall her experiences becoming an entrepreneur as a single mother and her story of struggle and success to overcome an abusive relationship. She is the best-selling author of eight books, including 鈥Rise, How a House Built a Family,鈥 which tells the story of building her 3,500-square-foot house with the help of her four children by watching YouTube tutorials and doing Google searches for subjects like foundation work, plumbing, and gas lines. News of the family鈥檚 story went viral in more than 65 countries and was viewed a billion times. 鈥凌颈蝉别鈥 has now been optioned to become a major motion picture. The event, organized by the, will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the Engineering and Information Technology Building Auditorium. The workshop will feature a keynote speech, 鈥淎 Survivor鈥檚 Perspective: Preventing and Responding to Sexual Assault on Campus,鈥 by Kamilah Willingham, an activist for survivors of sexual assault who appeared in the 2014 documentary In January 2011, Willingham, then a third-year Harvard Law student, reported that a fellow student sexually assaulted her and a friend. She will discuss her experiences filing separate reports with Harvard and the Cambridge Police and the investigations that followed. A screening of 鈥淭he Hunting Ground鈥 will be held in advance of the workshop at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the Student Services Center Auditorium. Dr. Erin Finzer, chair of the International and Second Language Studies Department, and Dr. Laura Bario-Vilar, an assistant professor of English, will speak about聽糖心Vlog传媒LR鈥檚 Green Dot Initiative. 鈥淭he national epidemic of college sexual assault has gained media and legal attention under Title IX, the 1972 legislation guaranteeing equal access, regardless of sex, to all educational activities and programs that receive federal funding,鈥 Finzer said. 鈥淲ith Green Dot, 糖心Vlog传媒LR was ahead of most U.S. universities in providing evidence-based prevention programming mandated under Title IX. We are pleased that Green Dot continues to be a touchstone of student life on our campus.鈥 In the final session, Teresa Williamson, the ethics and compliance officer at Northwest Arkansas Community College, will talk about how sexual assault complaints are handled on her campus. Monie Johnson, executive director of the Arkansas Coalition Against Sexual Assault, said the workshop鈥檚 programming will focus on educating individuals about campus resources that are available to survivors of sexual assault. 鈥淚n the past, resources were not readily available, but now more and more campuses are seeing the need to address this issue in a way that is beneficial for all students,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淪exual Assault Awareness Month allows us to bring the issue to the forefront of discussions, collectively, across the state as well as in our local communities and campuses. These discussions play a vital role in the movement to end sexual violence in our society.鈥 In recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, 糖心Vlog传媒LR will host numerous events, including a self-defense class on April 11, a sexual assault resource and health fair on April 12, and a dodgeball tournament fundraiser for the Arkansas Coalition Against Sexual Assault on April 13.
