The Best Practices competition invited students to submit a five to seven minute video recording of a presentation explaining a program or activity created and implemented to further the goals of the organization. These best practices were to exemplify the spirit and purpose of the organization and, if applicable, allow other chapters to implement the practices as well.听 The theme for the competition was 鈥淚nvest in Your Future鈥 and included a list of goals to choose from. The activities developed by the chapter could focus on gaining work-ready skills not acquired in the classroom, widening the chapter’s involvement, and serving the community or university. The chapters鈥 video presentations answered questions about the program or best practice developed such as the goals or expectations for their program, barriers experienced or overcome, and how members benefited from the program. 鈥淚 was excited to learn that we won first place for our region,鈥 said senior Stephen Malec, vice president of 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock鈥檚 chapter of Beta Alpha Psi. 鈥淚t was a surprise for sure, but I believe we had a great advantage being able to highlight all the wonderful things that our chapter represents.鈥 Malec said their presentation highlighted only some of the chapter鈥檚 practices including the operations of the Business Tutoring Lab, the Book Grant Scholarships Program, and the annual Continuing Professional Education (CPE) event organized by their chapter.听 鈥淲e focused on a variety of different ways that our local chapter gets involved in giving back and supporting the student body,鈥 Malec said. 鈥淲e wanted to focus on the ways that we effectively invest in our chapter as an organization, and the positive impact of these investments.鈥 The winners were selected by a panel of board members and professional partners acting independently from student, university, and chapter affiliations. The first place prize was a $500 award and the chance to present at BAP鈥檚 annual meeting as the final round of the competition continues. There, the first place winners will receive an additional $1,500 reward.听Malec will once again work alongside the president of Beta Alpha Psi, Aleigha Smith, to revise their presentation, but he said they are confident that they will be able to make improvements on their previous submission. It is a lot of fun to have this opportunity to further represent our chapter and, regardless of the outcome, I鈥檓 proud to be a part of all that our chapter represents,鈥 Malec said.听]]> Colliers Arkansas $25,000 Donation Points to Industry Support of Real Estate Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock /news-archive/2021/03/01/colliers-arkansas-donation/ Mon, 01 Mar 2021 17:50:56 +0000 /news/?p=78448 ... Colliers Arkansas $25,000 Donation Points to Industry Support of Real Estate Program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> Colliers Arkansas has made a $25,000 donation for a University of Arkansas at Little Rock scholarship established in honor of Colliers Arkansas Co-Founder L. Dickson Flake. The gift from Colliers Arkansas brings the L. Dickson Flake Endowed Scholarship to more than $230,000, which allows for more scholarships to be awarded in the fall for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock students pursuing an education in finance and real estate.听 鈥淒ickson Flake was truly a legend in the Arkansas business community. I was fortunate to be hired by him in 1993 as I was finishing graduate school at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock,鈥 said Kevin Huchingson, CEO and chairman of Colliers Arkansas. 鈥淗e was my mentor and close friend throughout the rest of his life. Dickson established our firm鈥檚 foundation and principles, the core values that have guided our firm for 50 years. He valued education and loved to hire students from 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and within the state. Dickson believed that knowledge and integrity were essential to advising our clients. This endowed scholarship will ensure that his teachings and values live on through even more generations of real estate professionals in our state.鈥 Flake鈥檚 daughter Leslye Shellam created the scholarship last year with a donation of $100,000 after family friends said that her father would want his legacy to promote education. 鈥淢y dad was known for education,鈥 Shellam said. 鈥淲henever you ask someone what they remember about dad, besides his interest and devotion and dedication to education, they all had their little nicknames for him. They had something to do with him being the wise one, the perceptive one, and the teacher. This scholarship is carrying on what鈥檚 important to my father. I think this scholarship is going to be around for a lot of years to come and help a lot of people.鈥 Flake, who passed away last year at the age of 81, was well known in the Little Rock real estate community. In 1971, Dickson joined three partners to form Barnes, Quinn, Flake and Anderson, predecessor of the Little Rock 鈥 Bentonville commercial real estate firm of Colliers Arkansas, which is now the largest commercial real estate company in the state. 鈥淲hat a lot of people don鈥檛 know about Dickson is he basically created the commercial real estate industry in Little Rock,鈥 said Isaac Smith, president of Colliers Arkansas. 鈥淧rior to Dickson, nobody was doing what we were doing today. There were appraisers and residential realtors, but he was the first to add a value service to people who were wanting to develop buildings and buy and sell buildings. He was an absolute pioneer in the Little Rock commercial real estate industry.鈥 The endowment is expected to provide almost $10,000 per year for the scholarship. It will be used to provide assistance for education-related expenses, including tuition, books, fees, and room and board, for undergraduate students pursuing a finance degree with an emphasis in real estate in the School of Business. The first recipient of the scholarship is Stephen Malec, a senior finance major with concentrations in real estate as well as financial services and risk management. Shellam presented Malec with the scholarship Feb. 23 at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Downtown. 鈥淎s the first recipient of this generous award, I am excited to see this scholarship award continue for many years to come,鈥 Malec said. 鈥淭his generosity and support for the School of Business and the Real Estate Finance program is admirable and greatly appreciated. My family and I are extremely grateful for this generosity on behalf of the family of Dickson Flake, I am further inspired to achieve my goals and pursue my dreams. I greatly appreciate this tremendous support.鈥 At 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, Flake served as a member of the Board of Visitors for 12 years and served as chairman from 1995 to 1996. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock began the real estate program in the 1970s and began revising the program in 2016 with advice from the local real estate community. The rapid endowment of this scholarship shows the importance of real estate in Little Rock. 鈥淒ickson Flake’s legacy runs throughout our entire region and beyond the borders of Arkansas,鈥 said Elizabeth Small, primary instructor for the real estate program. 鈥淗e was always in 鈥榯eaching mode,鈥 and he would be very happy to know students in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Real Estate Program will benefit with this scholarship opportunity. Current and future students will want to know the many accomplishments of such an industry giant and this will not be hard to share. Dickson touched many lives through words of wisdom, and he took the time to show concern for our region’s future. Emulating the value system of such a pragmatist will be a great lesson for all real estate students.鈥 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock and Colliers have a continuing effort to grow the L. Campus Bookstore Doubles Number of Student Book Grant Award Recipients]]> The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Campus Bookstore awarded a total of $25,000 in student scholarships for the spring 2021 semester, a $15,000 increase over previous semesters. This increase in the scholarship enabled the Bookstore Advisory Committee to select double the number of recipients to receive the book grant awards, adding much needed support for students within the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock community. According to the bookstore manager Brenda Thomas, they were able to give out a total of 50 book grant awards. Award recipients include 36 undergraduate students: Andrew Harden, Andrea Vargas, Ashley Gray, Bernard Gaer, Cami Lambert, Chaney Callahan, Clayton Hughes, Cory Gibson, Ebony Jackson, Faviola Alba, Haley Hankins, Jackson Jones, Jalen Black, Jasmine Morrow, Joy Allen, Kenedie St. Mary, Lakendra Mackey, Madison Harper, Makayla Harville, Makayla Machen, Maria McNeill, Meghan McClain, Morgan Morrow, Noah Eggensperger, Reanna Hamm, Shanna Hastings, Shuntele Carroll, Stephen Malec, Sydney Miller, Takeria Toombs, Teylen Patterson, Tiarra Richardson, Timothy Croft, Tonya Anderson, Victoria Corley, and Yashvi Adhvaryu. In addition, the grant was awarded to graduate students Cassandra LaBahn, Eureka Ice, Kasha Greer, LaKeisha Matthews, Latoya McCoy, LeCole White, Viola Schaeffer; and William H. Bowen School of Law students Daniel Vega, Hayley Ferguson, Lina Nguyen, Morgan Topping, Nicole Schaum, Noel Ahaneku, and Sarah Dika. 鈥淚 felt ecstatic and thankful when I found out that I was awarded the book scholarship,鈥 Matthews said. 鈥淚 have never been awarded a scholarship like this before, and this award encouraged me about my learning opportunities for the upcoming semester.鈥 The recipients represent a multitude of majors from marketing to social work, finance, art, nursing and engineering, to name a few. McNeill, an undergraduate studying health education and promotion, said this award allowed her to purchase books without any out-of-pocket expenses.听 鈥淭his, in turn, allowed me to work fewer hours during the semester and spend my time studying instead,鈥 McNeill said. Eggensperger, an undergraduate social work student, said this award gave him the opportunity to own his textbooks rather than rent them. 鈥淭his is invaluable as the content I’m currently learning will be the foundation of my career as a social worker,鈥 Eggensperger said. 鈥淚鈥檓 honored to have been a recipient of this award.鈥 This award not only assists students with purchasing textbooks, but it also allows them to access their books on time and begin the semester prepared for classes. 鈥淚 was able to go directly to the bookstore and get what I needed to be equipped for the semester studies,鈥 said White, a graduate social work student. 鈥淭hank you so much 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock!鈥 According to one recipient, this can make all the difference for students, especially now. 鈥淎wards like this are important, especially during the trying times and uncertainty we are experiencing right now,鈥 said Ice, a graduate student. 鈥淚t takes away the burden of having to pay so much for books, which are expensive. Student debt is such a heavy burden for millions of people like me, especially minorities. I’m grateful for this opportunity.鈥 Ferguson, a Bowen law student, said that while this award was not enough to cover the entire cost of her books, it relieved a great deal of stress surrounding the furthering of her education. 鈥淟aw school textbooks are extremely expensive, and it was so hopeful to be able to have part of them paid through this award,鈥 Ferguson said. 鈥淲hen I heard I got this award, I felt an instant relief of stress because I would not have to work extra hours in my second job to be able to afford my textbooks. I was able to relax and enjoy my Christmas break. Scholarships such as this one are so important, especially to law students, because the cost of furthering education is so expensive.鈥 As an undergraduate social work student, Mackey said this award allowed her to take care of her children鈥檚 needs rather than paying for her own supplies. 鈥淲ith scholarships and grants, an individual can feel that they are worthy of receiving an education just like everyone else,鈥 Mackey said. 鈥淧arents can feel like they are not taking money out of the house to continue their education.鈥 Eligibility for the scholarship included a minimum 2.5 GPA, six completed credit hours for graduate students, and nine completed credit hours for undergraduate students. The Bookstore Advisory Committee also considered leadership qualities, academic achievements, community service, and financial need. 鈥淲hen I received the email that I had been selected for the book grant award, I felt overjoyed, honored, and highly appreciative,鈥 Carroll said. 鈥淭his award afforded me the opportunity of alleviating the financial stressor, which allowed me to focus more on my academic progress and the continuation of my education goals.鈥 An undergraduate finance student echoed this statement, saying the recent pandemic has added significant financial strain on families such as his, but receiving this award allowed him to look forward to a successful semester. 鈥淭his book grant meant a lot to me as this was the first scholarship award I have received as a student,鈥 Malec said. 鈥淏eing able to purchase my books with this award has greatly helped me and my family. Thank you to all involved in making this book grant award happen. I appreciate it very much.鈥]]>
