��Vlog��ý Little Rock employees ride Tour de Rock in honor of vice chancellor’s brother

Nine employees from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock rode nearly 550 miles in honor of a vice chancellor’s brother who is battling cancer. Steve McClellan, ��Vlog��ý Little Rock vice chancellor for finance and administration, sponsored the employees to ride the on June 1 in honor of his brother, Bruce McClellan, who is battling lung cancer. CARTI’s 16th annual Tour de Rock supports CARTI’s continued fight against cancer by providing the most advanced forms of treatment available while also meeting the needs of patients and their families. Nearly 1,000 cyclists rode one of four routes of 25, 50, 62, or 100 miles. This is the second year that McClellan has sponsored a team of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock cyclists to ride the Tour de Rock and raise money for cancer. Last year, the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock team rode nearly 500 miles in honor of Bruce McClellan. “One of the most touching things about the event is that you get to write the name of a person who is fighting cancer on your shirt,” said Martial Trigeaud, business consultant with the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center and faculty advisor of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Cycling Club. “This year, we wrote the name of Steve’s brother, Bruce. Many people also wrote the name of another friend or relative, someone they love, who has faced cancer.” ��Vlog��ý Little Rock employees and students who rode in the Tour de Rock include Alex Biris, director of the Center for Integrative Nanotechnology Sciences; Thomas Bunton, associate vice chancellor and chief information officer; Molly Castner, deputy athletic director and senior woman administrator; Emilie Darrigues, a Ph.D. student of applied science; John Evans, senior associate athletic director for facilities and events; Ian Hadden, director of energy management services; Ashton Hale, a criminal justice graduate student; Sean Orme, a Ph.D. student in computer science; and Trigeaud. One of ��Vlog��ý Little Rock’s riders, Hadden, even took on the special challenge of riding in the pace group, where cyclists complete 100 miles in under 5 hours. Hadden finished 100 miles in 4:54:03 and burned 8,680 calories in that time.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Cycling Club is looking for 10 students, faculty, and staff members to ride the Tour de Rock on Saturday, June 1. For the second year in a row, Steve McClellan, vice chancellor for finance and administration, will sponsor a team of people to ride the in honor of his brother, Bruce McClellan, who is battling lung cancer. “My brother found out that he had a pretty serious situation going on with cancer,” McClellan said. “There is not much I can do other than support him. Completion of new wireless network brings easier and faster Internet access to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock celebrated its conversion to a new uniform wireless network that has greatly improved the internet experience for the entire campus community. Student Government Association President Larry Dicus removed the last legacy wireless access point on campus and installed the final modern wireless access point in its place during a ceremony on Nov. 13 in the Center for Integrative Nanotechnology Sciences, the last of the 57 buildings on campus where the wireless network has been upgraded in the past 39 weeks. “It’s a great achievement for campus,” said Dr. Thomas Bunton, associate vice chancellor and chief information officer. “For the first time, all classrooms, residence halls, shared spaces, and dining halls have similar technology that provides very fast wireless speeds and coverage. In previous years, the coverage and speeds students, staff, and faculty would experience depended on what building or department they were in and how much they could afford.” ��Vlog��ý Little Rock has invested more than $5 million to improve the university’s core network environment that consists of technology that originally was implemented in 2008. “A project like this is significant,” said Dr. Mark Allen Poisel, vice chancellor student affairs. “The ability to access wireless is critical to our students. As we imagine how to reinvent the classroom experience, access to wireless is critical. We are at a time when technology changes so rapidly. This puts us in a position where we can change with that technology.” When Bunton arrived on campus in March 2016, he saw a need to improve the campus’s aging network. IT Services has been working diligently to upgrade the campus network with current technology to support the university’s teaching and research missions, both now and into the future. The new network will provide campus users a modern, wireless networking environment that is sufficient to support faculty, researchers, student, and staff needs.

“I am very appreciative of the new wireless network,” Dicus said. “As a student, Netflix is important. Being able to do homework on campus, as opposed to going off campus to get wireless access, is something we really need.” Among the improvements to the wireless network is an increased number of access points, faster speeds, and easier access for guests. ��Vlog��ý Little Rock increased its Wi-Fi access points by a factor of seven from 600 to more than 3,200. While the average speed of those access points was 11 Mbps (megabytes per second), the speed has increased to nearly 500 Mbps. The new wireless network also allows the university to better monitor and profile user devices, with an improved guest-user function that provides easier self-service access and more security features. In addition, the technology lays the groundwork for video surveillance and VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), which will save the university $200,000 a year. “This is an amazing accomplishment for ��Vlog��ý Little Rock,” Bunton said. “We are probably one of the very few campuses in the country with a completely uniform, modern Wi-Fi network.” Bunton thanked vendors HPE Aruba, Next Step Innovation, and Advanced Cabling for their hard work in bringing the new wireless network to fruition. He also thanked Chancellor Andrew Rogerson, Steve McClellan, vice chancellor of finance, the Student Government Association, and the Student Advisory Committee for their help in completing the project. Now that all the wireless access points on campus have been transitioned to the new network, the next goal is to replace all the wired ports on campus – a project that should be finished in a year, according to Bunton. Steve McClellan, vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, wanted to do something to support his brother. Bruce McClellan, who lives near Alexandria, Louisiana, was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and has been fighting the disease ever since. “My brother found out that he had a pretty serious situation going on with cancer,” McClellan said. “There is not much I can do other than support him. Sometimes, you want to do whatever you can to let the person know that you are there.” His attention turned to CARTI’s 15th annual Tour de Rock on June 2. McClellan and his family members have often participated in the cycling fundraiser that supports CARTI’s continued fight against cancer by providing the most advanced forms of treatment available while also meeting the needs of patients and their families. McClellan sponsored a team of 12 ��Vlog��ý Little Rock riders who participated in the Tour de Rock in honor of Bruce. McClellan and his wife, Ladye Ann, also rode in the event. He contacted Martial Trigeaud, business consultant with the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center and one of the faculty advisors of the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock Cycling Club, who immediately put the call out on social media for club members who would be interested in riding in the Tour de Rock. “I said I was sure we could find people to ride for them,” Trigeaud said. “I posted it on Facebook. In less than five minutes, I had 10 people reaching out to me to say they wanted to ride for Steve McClellan and his brother. Many of the members were excited to ride in honor of Bruce and members of their family who were affected by cancer.”

��Vlog��ý Little Rock employees and students who rode in the Tour de Rock include Alex Biris, director of the Center for Integrative Nanotechnology Sciences; Thomas Bunton of Information Technology Services; Emilie Darrigues, a Ph.D. student of applied science; John Evans, associate athletics director for facilities and events; Ian Hadden, director of energy management services; Luis Lopez; a student majoring in political science; Matthew Morton of the Department of Public Safety; Melanie Ridlon, a student in the MBA program; and Drew Smith, an adjunct instructor for the Nonprofit Leadership Studies Program. Unfortunately, Trigeaud, who was meant to be the 10th ��Vlog��ý Little Rock rider, could not participate due to an injury. Cyclists choose to ride distances of 25, 50, 62, 80, or 100 miles. The ��Vlog��ý Little Rock team members rode nearly 500 miles in honor of Bruce McClellan. Altogether, 880 riders participated in Tour de Rock, including riders from Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas. “They put together a very diverse team of riders in a very short period of time, which I thought was remarkable. I’m thankful to Martial Trigeaud and Ian Hadden for putting that together,” McClellan said. “My brother was real proud and very thankful. He is a very religious person, so the ride meant a lot to him. Morrison named new associate vice chancellor for finance

A University of Arkansas at Little Rock alumnus is returning to Arkansas to become the associate vice chancellor for finance. Darrell Morrison, senior manager for business and financial analysis at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will start his new position May 1. The associate vice chancellor for finance at ��Vlog��ý Little Rock is responsible for the administration of the university’s financial operations and reports to Steve McClellan, vice chancellor for finance and administration. Morrison previously worked as the vice president for business affairs at Texas A&M University-San Antonio and as the vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Morrison held several administrative positions at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, including controller, associate vice president for finance/director of financial services, and vice president for finance. For more than eight years, Morrison held various leadership positions with the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers and served on the National Association of College and University Business Officers board. Morrison earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in accounting in 1985 from Henderson State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2005. He and his wife, Kelli, have five children and are looking forward to returning home to ��Vlog��ý Little Rock. “I am extremely excited to join Mr. McClellan, the financial and administration staff, and the ��Vlog��ý Little Rock campus, and am ready to hit the ground running in order to continue to advance the university,” Morrison said. “I am thankful to be selected for this great opportunity.”
