DeGray named Sun Belt Athlete of the Year]]> The Sun Belt Athlete of the Year award, which annually recognizes one female and one male student-athlete, is the highest individual honor given and based on athletic performance, academic success, outstanding leadership, and character. DeGray is the third female student-athlete from Little Rock to earn the honor and fifth overall, joining Rashad Jones-Jennings (2006-07), Chastity Reed (2010-11), Solomon Bozeman (2010-11), and Edina Begic (2014-15). She was honored alongside Georgia Southern men’s golfer Steven Fisk. “On behalf of the conference, I want to congratulate Ronjanae and Steven on receiving this honor. They epitomize what being a Sun Belt student-athlete is all about,” said Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill. DeGray led Little Rock to a share of the 2018-19 Sun Belt regular-season title and conference tournament title. The two-time, All-Sun Belt first-team selection averaged a team-leading 14.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. DeGray capped her career as a member of the school’s 1,000-point club (1,234 points) and all-time leader in field goal percentage (.485) and free throw percentage (.775). “I am very proud of the accomplishments Ronjanae has earned and this is certainly a great accomplishment for her and her team,” said Little Rock women’s basketball head coachÌýJoe Foley. “Ronjanae stood out as an enthusiastic, goal-oriented basketball player who was dedicated to the game and always remained very positive. Baseball and soccer comprised the largest total number of honorees, fitting as they were the two Little Rock programs that were recognized as the Sun Belt Team Academic Award winners for the past season in their respective sports. Baseball landed 15 on the commissioner’s list with an additional 12 on the academic honor roll, while soccer placed 22 total student-athletes on the lists, including 20 on the commissioner’s list. Men’s and women’s track and field and cross country combined to have 19 student-athletes recognized, 11 of which were on the commissioner’s list. Volleyball added 10 student-athletes, men’s golf registered seven, and women’s golf added six, all of which were named to the commissioner’s list. Trojans post strong graduation success rates]]> The latest GSR rankings show the Trojans with an 82 percent graduation rate, one that consistently ranks among the best in both the Sun Belt Conference and the state of Arkansas. Little Rock has boasted the highest Graduation Success Rate among Division I schools in the state six of the last seven years and has consistently ranked among the top schools in the Sun Belt. “Graduating Champions continues to be at the center of everything we do,” said Vice Chancellor and Director of AthleticsÌýChasse Conque. “The latest GSR further demonstrates our commitment to our student-athletes and their experience as a Little Rock Trojan.” This is the 14th year that the NCAA has calculated data for the GSR and the Trojans’ rate has improved by 16 points since the initial report in 1998. Little Rock has registered a GSR in the 80s in each of the last four reports, highlighted by the Trojans’ high water mark of 83 in last year’s report. A number of Trojan athletic programs had impressive ratings as well, contributing to another strong showing for Little Rock. The ranking is highlighted by a GSR score of 100 for volleyball, 92 for swimming and diving, 91 for men’s basketball and 88 for women’s golf. This year’s GSR is based on student-athletes who began enrollment in the fall of 2011 or the spring of 2012 and received athletic aid in their first year of college. The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The success in the classroom adds to what has been a monumental fall semester for Little Rock in competition. Soccer set a program-record with 13 victories and captured its first Sun Belt Conference championship, advancing to the NCAA tournament. Volleyball has doubled its win total from last season, finishing the regular season fourth in the Sun Belt and heads to the conference tournament this week with the league’s Player of the Year in Veronica Marin. Cross country also had a strong showing in the fall semester, highlighted by Shanieke Watson capturing third team All-Sun Belt honors and placing 16th at the NCAA South Central Regional last week. Little Rock Trojans Day set for Aug. 23]]> For the second-straight year, Little Rock is teaming up with the 3rd Street Sector Merchants Association with Dugan’s Pub, located at the corner of Rock and 3rd Streets, serving as the host venue for the block party. The event proved to be a great success last year with a large contingent of Trojan fans joining the department downtown. Little Rock will once again team up with 103.7 The Buzz that evening as part of the station’s afternoon show “Drive Time Sports,” broadcasting live on site from the downtown event. Hosted by Randy Rainwater, a number of Trojan head coaches will be featured during the show from 4-7 p.m. that evening. The Trojans will be represented by student-athletes and coaches from its athletic programs, as well as the Little Rock dance team and pep band. The event will provide opportunities for fans to take pictures and get to know their favorite Little Rock student-athletes. In addition, the downtown bridges will be lit maroon that night to help promote Little Rock’s team. They’ll face a familiar face when they take on the Wareham Gateman as pitcher will suit up for the Gatemen. Three Trojans are also competing in the Northwoods League, located throughout the upper Midwest. Utility player made his debut for the Bismarck (North Dakota) Larks Tuesday evening, driving in a bases clearing three-run double in his first at-bat. He’ll see a pair of his Trojan teammates during the season as pitcher is playing for the Fon Du Lac Dock (Wisconsin) Spiders, already notching a save with six strikeouts in four appearances. Trojans complete another successful academic semester]]> That mark comes on the heels of the Trojans boasting a department-record 3.3 GPA following the fall 2017 semester as Little Rock student-athletes have now posted a department-wide GPA of 3.0 or better for the 12th-straight semester. “The academic success of our student-athletes continue to impress,” said Director of Athletics Chasse Conque. “Our focus each and every day is to Graduate Champions, and I could not be more proud of the hard work of our student-athletes again this semester. I express my appreciation to our coaches, as well as Senior Woman Administrator Molly Castner, as they deserve a great deal of credit for continuing to provide support and mentorship, giving our student-athletes the tools they need to succeed.” Ten of Little Rock’s 12 intercollegiate athletic programs finished the spring 2018 semester with a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better. Additionally, 118 Trojan student-athletes recorded a semester GPA of 3.0 or better, including 36 that boasted a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester. Once again, women’s golf led the way with a 3.7 cumulative GPA, followed by women’s cross country with a 3.67 GPA. Soccer registered a 3.66 team GPA with 22 players finishing the semester with a 3.0 or higher, led by a department-best 13 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA. Men’s golf finished the spring semester with a team GPA of 3.49, followed by swimming and diving team’s 3.48 mark, including 25 student-athletes with a 3.0 or better and 11 with a perfect 4.0. Our young people, our coaches, and Senior Woman Administrator should be commended for their dedication as we continue to graduate champions.” Seven of the Trojans’ 12 athletic programs finished the fall 2017 semester with a 3.0 GPA or higher as 135 Little Rock student-athletes posted a 3.0 or better. With the performance in the fall, Little Rock’s student-athletes have posted a department-wide GPA above 3.0 for the 11th-straight semester. Women’s golf once again led the way, posting a 3.76 GPA during the fall and holds a 3.7 cumulative grade point average. Soccer’s 3.7 GPA ranked second as both programs achieved impressive results during their competition season, seeing a combined 29 student-athletes eclipse the 3.0 mark. Men’s golf also had a strong showing during their competition season with a 3.44 GPA during the fall, aided by six players above a 3.0, followed by swimming and diving’s 3.37 and baseball’s 3.35 grade point averages. Aparicio Gili continues to be a constant for the Trojans, appearing in all 19 games with 17 starts at the forward position. The St. Antoni de Vilamajor, Spain, native has registered two goals and two assists on the year, putting 19 of her 31 shots on goal while playing just shy of 1,300 minutes for the Trojans in 2017. Greulich has paced the Little Rock offense this season, registering a team-best eight goals with one assist, notching the game-winner in the 3-1 win at Georgia State. The Potsdam, Germany, native has a pair of multi-goal games in 2017, netting a hat trick at Murray State while scoring two goals against the Panthers, earning herself a pair of Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honors. Seifert made an immediate impact in her first season as a Trojan, seeing action in all 19 games with 16 starts on defense. The Potsdam, Germany, native registered a pair of goals on the year, including the game-winner in the 4-0 victory over UT-Rio Grande Valley, while helping the Little Rock defense hold opponents to 1.26 goals per game with five shutouts. Little Rock finished the 2016-17 season with a combined team GPA of 3.71, ranking first among all Trojan athletic programs. The team posted an outstanding combined 3.9 GPA for the fall 2016 semester and followed up that performance with a 3.69 GPA in the spring. For their efforts both on the course and in the classroom, five Trojans were named WGCA All-American Scholars in 2016-17.ÌýÌýmade the list for the third time in her Little Rock career withÌýÌýandÌýÌýeach earning honors for the second time.ÌýÌýandÌýÌýboth made the cut as well, needing a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher to qualify. The recognition came in a year in which Little Rock remained competitive in competition as well, finishing the year with a 307.39 per round average. The Trojans finished among the Top 10 in nine of their 11 events of the year, highlighted by a runner-up showing at the Little Rock/ASU Invitational in March. The Commissioner’s List recognizes student-athletes with grade point averages (GPA) above 3.5, and the Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.49. The 106 total student-athletes on those lists is up from last year’s total of 99. Fifty-six student-athletes made the Commissioner’s List in 2017 — the second-highest total since 2014. The Trojan baseball team had the highest number of student-athletes on both lists with 28 members in total. Fourteen members of the team were named to the Commissioner’s List, and 14 others were named to the Honor Roll. Soccer had the highest number of student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s List with 17. Seven others were named to the Honor Roll for a total of 24 student-athletes recognized by the league. Little Rock track and field and cross country combined for 22 student-athletes on the Sun Belt lists. Four men and four women were named to the Commissioner’s List, and five men and nine women were named to the Honor Roll. Women’s basketball had eight student-athletes honored by the league with one on the Commissioner’s List and seven on the Honor Roll. Eight members of the Trojan volleyball team were placed on the Sun Belt lists, as four earned spots on the Commissioner’s List and four earned spots on the Honor Roll. Men’s golf saw seven of its student-athletes honored as six earned placement on the Commissioner’s List and one made it to the Honor Roll.
