VEX IQ for beginners Dates: Session 1: June 24-28, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dates: Session 2: June 24-28, 1 to 4 p.m. Grades: 3-8 This camp will be centered around the VEX IQ robotics kit used by many schools in Arkansas. This camp will focus on introducing students to VEX IQ robotics components, programming methods, and construction techniques. Girl Powered VEX EDR Dates: July 8-12, 1 to 4 p.m. Grades: Girls 6-12 The purpose of VEX Girl Powered camp is to encourage new experiences, a diverse culture, and a more encompassing definition of what a roboticist looks like. In an effort to encourage more middle school and high school girls to participate in robotics, this camp is a girls-only session. VEX EDR Dates: July 15-19, 1 to 4 p.m. Grades 6-12 This camp explores the worlds of engineering, robotics, and coding with the VEX Robotics Design System. Students get hands-on experience building a frame and base for the robot and engineer its wiring. Teams must adapt their robots to compete in user-piloted challenges and obstacle courses as well as autonomous robot challenges requiring programming using the ROBOTC software. Student entrepreneurs raise money for 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International Scholarship Fund]]> Young entrepreneurs participating in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock 鈥淎CHIEVE鈥 summer camp will sell their business products July 14 and July 19 to raise money for the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International Scholarship Fund.聽 This is the 15th year of the program, which serves 125 kindergarten through fourth-grade students, who are spending six weeks in the summer enrichment program learning how to become entrepreneurs and developing their own products and business plans. The goods created by the hard-working student entrepreneurs will be on sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the Farmers Market at the at 400 President Clinton Ave. The students will also be at the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock University District Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 19. The market is held in the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Plaza parking lot at 5820 Asher Ave. The products for sale include coasters created by the kindergarteners, watercolor calendars by the first graders, and watercolor greeting cards and artwork by the second graders, as well as wire-people greeting cards by third graders and potpourri pouches titled 鈥淯nique EsScents鈥 by the veteran fourth graders. During the summer program, instructors taught students the financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills needed to run a business, including how to speak to customers and investors, how to handle money, create a budget, and save money for a business.

鈥淭he youth are learning to be socially responsible and understand they can make a difference,鈥 said Paula Rogers, program engagement manager at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International. Our goal is to eradicate poverty. If our youth learn how to empower themselves by becoming entrepreneurs, they can find a way to reverse their situation.鈥 In the past 14 years, the young entrepreneurs have raised more than $20,000 selling their homemade products in support of local charities. This year鈥檚 funds will go to the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International Scholarship Fund, which supports graduating seniors and recipients of the HOPE Scholarship. Last year, 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International students donated more than $900 to 鈥淰ictory Over Violence鈥 campaign organizers from KARK and Fox16. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International is a nonprofit organization established in 1994 as a partnership between the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Children International, a Kansas City-based organization serving students in kindergarten through 24 years of age through programs and services in the areas of health, education, employment, and empowerment. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Children International is the only site in the United States and will celebrate 25 years of operation in 2019.  ]]>

Young writers can develop skills at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock summer camps]]> The Little Rock Writing Project hopes to inspire the next generation of great writers with two summer camps for students in third through 12th 驳谤补诲别蝉.听 The Young Writers Camp for students entering third through fifth grade in fall 2018 will take place from 8 a.m. to noon June 11-15 on the 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock campus. The Emerging Writers Institute will feature two camps for junior high and high school students from June 25-29. The camp for students entering sixth through eighth grades will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. while students entering ninth through 12th grades will be in camp from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to work closely with experienced writers from the university鈥檚 Little Rock Writing Project. At the Emerging Writers Institute, students get the opportunity to become published authors. 鈥淲e want to give the students a great writing experience,鈥 said Greg Graham, director of the Little Rock Writing Project. 鈥淭he end result of our time together is a professionally published anthology of the students鈥 writing, which includes a photo, a bio, and a selected piece of writing from each student. It鈥檚 exciting for them to see their work published in a book.鈥 In the Young Writers Camp, participants will write stories, poems, biographies, tall tales, and skits; create mini books; develop a writer鈥檚 notebook; and create a class publication. Future authors attend Young Writers Camp at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock]]> The camp for writers in third through sixth grade happened to coincide with a planned visit to her grandparents in Little Rock while Mullins鈥 parents were traveling to celebrate their anniversary. 鈥淚 loved camp,鈥 Maddy Mullins said. 鈥淚t was a lot of fun. I liked being creative through all the writing activities.鈥 Each day started with participants writing about a prompt, such as finding a talking dog on the front porch. They also worked in small writing groups, and read in front of other participants. Campers created a writer鈥檚 notebook and composed poems about their heritage. In addition, they developed original characters, turned them into stick puppets, and wrote a skit about them. 鈥淭his has been a full, fun-filled week of writing,鈥 said Pam Maisen, director of Young Writers Camp. 鈥淓ach day we were able to use our imagination, expand our vocabulary, and explore various ways to make writing come alive. Many stories, friendships, and lasting memories were created this week.鈥 Young Writers Camp is one of many summer camps that 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock hosts to explore skills in musical theatre, writing, computer coding, robotics, basketball, volleyball, swimming, soccer, and more. The culmination of the camp was an anthology, containing a story written by each of the 2o campers. During the closing reception on Friday, June 23, campers excitedly shared these anthologies and read their stories in front of a room packed with proud parents, grandparents, and siblings. Dent Gitchel, assistant professor in the rehabilitation counseling program at 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock, said his daughter, Lilah Gitchell, couldn鈥檛 wait to go to camp. 鈥淗er self-confidence in writing has grown,鈥 Gitchel said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 always been creative. This week, she鈥檚 been working to develop her stories at home. She鈥檚 always borrowing my phone, opening up the notes app, and working on her stories wherever we go.鈥 After attending the camp, Lilah has found her future career. 鈥淚 want to be a writer when I grow up,鈥 she said. Applications available for ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp]]> The next generation of innovators, scientists, and engineers can get a head start in their future careers at the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp July 9-21 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.聽 Thanks to a grant from and , 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock Donaghey College of Engineering and Information Technology will host a free, two-week summer camp for middle school students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math. For the 12th consecutive year, ExxonMobil Foundation and Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr., the first African American to walk in space, will sponsor summer science camps at universities 聽across the United States. 糖心Vlog传媒 Little Rock is hosting the camp for the ninth year. To be eligible, students must be members of a traditionally underserved and underrepresented population; be entering sixth, seventh, or eighth grade; have an overall grade of at least a B in math and science; and a score at the median to superior level on standardized math and science tests. They also must write a 250-word essay and have strong recommendations from their math and science teachers. Led by Executive Camp Director and Engineering and Information Technology Assistant Dean Vernard Henley, the two-week residential summer camp will host 36 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students from all over the state. These STEM-curious attendees will participate in experiments and go on field excursions to reinforce the project-based curriculum.
